If No One More Dignified Will, Maybe Channing Tatum Will Be 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'

November 15, 2011

G.I. Joe team member and step-upper Channing Tatum is reportedly the latest in a line of actors being considered for the lead in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. that absolutely no one will take. Director Steven Soderbergh had originally counted on George Clooney to play Napoleon Solo, the star of the remake, but Clooney departed the project due to recent surgery leaving him unfit to adequately charm by the film's start date. Offers were then rumored to have gone out to Matt Damon and Johnny Depp before Bradley Cooper cheerfully agreed to gobble up those A-list scraps. But he, too, recently dropped out of the running, and now Deadline is claiming Soderbergh's eye is on Tatum--the titular star of the director's upcoming stripper film, Magic Mike--to take the lead. No offer has yet gone out, so there's still time to explain to Soderbergh that trading out George Clooney for Channing Tatum is like drinking all your dad's aged scotch and refilling the decanter with a Coors six-pack.
