Dec 1 2009Hollywood Losing Its Best Baldwin

Alec Baldwin has joined the ranks of actors claiming they're retiring. Speaking to Men's Journal, our premier digest for masculine issues, the actor warned that Stephen may soon become the more preeminent Baldwin brother because Alec thinks all of his own movies are shit:

"I don't have any interest in acting anymore," Baldwin, 51, told "Men's Journal" in an interview for its December issue.

Men's Journal quoted Baldwin as saying it was "pretty much it for him" after "30 Rock", "in a couple of years or so". He told Playboy Magazine this year he was "done" with his career in 2012 and would retire at "30 Rock"'s wrap party.

"I consider my entire movie career a complete failure," he told Men's Journal. "The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that."

"And now, the movies I've been in, I never give them a moment's thought. Every movie I've ever been in, I just avoid," he said.

Come on, Alec. You don't even watch Beetlejuice if it's on TV? You should. Pretty good little film. Though I can't really argue that you, like Meryl Streep, haven't had a real masterpiece that was your own. So, whatever. It's not my successful career you're pretending to quit for a couple years until you decide to do more movies. Do as you wish.

More importantly: does this mean 30 Rock is ending in two years? What am I going to watch then? Someone needs to get to work on a new watchable television comedy for 2012. And make it in hologram form, because this is the future.

What... is ... that sound?

Is... is that the sound of the rest of the Baldwins screaming "HERE'S OUR CHANCE!!!"

Yeah... I hate to say it but Alec really is a "Steals the movie" not a "Leads the acting army" kinda actor... although I really like THE SHADOW so what do I know. Oh wait, I know Alec paid his dues and narrated THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE... at least he got a twilight in 30 ROCK... someone right this man a masterpiece stat!

Well, didn't I come off ass an idjiut. Mean "write" not "right."

What a load of garbage. He was awesome in Glengarry Glen Ross. And the movie is a critical success where his short one scene performance is often heralded as the best part of the movie. David Mamet even wrote in that one scene for the movie when he adapted his play. But yeah, that and Beetlejuice are huge failures, right? Almost worse than The Hunt for Red October or The Departed. Here's a better idea: don't agree to be in crap movies like Along Came Polly and just pick your roles more carefully and maybe you'll be in something you feel good about.

it was hinted at that 30 rock was a couple of seasons away from the end in one episode where jack said that TGS had 2 seasons left at best, i think.
i will be sorry to see this show end, although it's better to end early, like seinfeld, than never, like the simpsons...

Ah do whatever you want Alec everyone hates movies and movie stars now anyway.

He's perfect in 30 Rock. Might as well retire on top, I guess. Or as close to it as he'll ever get. Although, I did just see the movie Lymelife and thought he was pretty good in it.

What? I was in Beetlejuice? I have no recollection of that. Maybe my acting was just so awesome that I slipped seamlessly into the narrative without noticeably ingraining myself upon your memory.

Never compare Meryl Streep to the lowly b-listed Alec Baldwin.

i saw dirty rock once...didnt care for it, i just assumed its a white thing.

as for alec baldwin. its great to hear he is retiring. never really cared for that slob.

his performance in the cooler was one of the finest of his career, of any career in hollywood right now

here's hoping that community and parks and recreations will still be around. and the league?? pretty effin' funny, man!

@ Griff: But don't you see? Those are all brilliant roles, but SUPPORTING ROLES. He's never had a great starring role that allowed him to show range and depth. Considering the success he's had, wanting that perfect role is pretty greedy, but I still see what he means.
