Feb 12 2009Studios Fight for Jane Austen with Zombies

Hollywood studios have confused a glorified fan-fiction/decent Threadless t-shirt idea for a great movie script, and they're now in a bidding war for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a not-yet-released parody of the Jane Austen classic that adds some extra content that implies a zombie invasion was simultaneously occurring:

Hollywood studios are bidding to turn a radical reworking of Austen’s most popular book, now called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a parody to be published in April, into a blockbuster movie.

The forthcoming novel is the first mainstream “mash-up” of Austen and horror, two of the most popular film genres of the past decade.

“It quickly became obvious that Jane [Austen] had laid down the blueprint for a zombie novel,” said Grahame-Smith, a television comedy writer. “Why else in the original should a regiment arrive on Lizzie Bennet’s doorstep when they should have been off fighting Napoleon? It was to protect the family from an invasion of brain-eaters, obviously.”

From then on it was easy to imagine Bennet and her four sisters as zombie slayers, trained since childhood in the deadly arts of Chinese kung fu, and Fitzwilliam Darcy as a promoter of the socially superior ninja skills of Japan.

“About 85% is the original Jane Austen text,” he said.

(Thanks, Alix.)

Is that really all it takes to get a book and movie deal now? Combining a classic novel with a character that's popular in the realm of pseudo-humor? I can do that:

Jane Arrrrr - Jane Eyre, but some of the dialogue is changed so that the characters sound like pirates.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finnja - The Mark Twain classic reimagined with Huck having ninja abilities.

Of Mice and Men and Robots - The complete text of Of Mice and Men with an epilogue that explains how robots can and will easily crush both mice and men.

Now give me money.

I'm currently working on a brilliant re-boot of "Lord of the Flies", where the boys discover that they all have bone-claws.

Dude! I would so see Huckleberry Finnja! Instead of a raft, it would be a low profile secret assault vehicle with cameos from Bomb Sawyer.

"Paint my fence or I will deal jihad to you!"

It's the way Mark Twain would want to be remembered.

And as for further mockeries...

Oliver "Ebola" Twist - An orphan that no one wanted becomes the world's deadliest prize. Pharmaceutical companies send mercenaries to hunt down patient zero before he can spread his Ollie Appleseeds of Death. This fall, Haley Joel Osment is Oliver "Ebola" Twist.

How about "Catcher in the Reinhold", where it's Catcher in the Rye, but all the scenes take place in Judge Reinhold films... like Beverly Hills Cop III

I am not going to lie. As bad as this sounds, I will totally watch it. I love both Pride and Prejudice and Zombie movies. I try and see all that I can. Combining the witty exchange of Darcy and Lizzy with the blood of zombies is probably the recipie for hours of my entertainment.

War and Pieces
-War and Peace re imagined with delicious Reese's Pieces as the main character

Can we hurry up and get this movie made already so I can go back to goading my friends to do insane stunts for youtube? Ryan is ready to break his collarbone here.

What the crap?!?! Who in their right mind would do this to Jane's work. She was one of the greatest authors of all time. Are they insane?

I guess they are if walking fleshing eating dead people are involved. The only positive thing I can say is maybe someone will have Wickham get eaten by a zombie.

What am I saying? You people are crazy!

oh my God.

its taking a lot out of me not laugh out loud.

Sadly I would totally watch Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!

like it.

Mr. I Watch Stuff I love your ideas. Jane Arrr sounds like fun and for some reason I can picture Will Smith in Of mice and Men and Robots.

and who ever said "Oliver Ebola Twist" is brilliant.

I will read the book.

I will not watch the movie.

haha when i first read the post, i thought this WAS a threadless shirt and i kept looking for the link...

oh and yeah, id totally rent this.

The Jane Arrrr suggestion made me laugh a little too loudly.

I've got one: The Sound and the Furious.
Street racing meets Faulker.

It's gold.

The Great Glocksby, where Jamie Fox battles for the affections of Halle Berry now that he's considered a respectable actor alongside her
