Oct 27 2008Nolan (Vaguely) Answers if He'll Direct Third Batman

Hey, grandchildren, do you still follow that cape man you liked so much? That... Batmin character? Oh, good, because Christopher Nolan has finally spoken on if he's doing a third Batmin movie! His answer: maybe. More specifically:

Well ... let me think how to put this. There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name? [Laughs.] At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven't been too many of those either. It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer.

Maybe he's right. You can't always maintain the kind of third-chapter quality of an Austin Powers in Goldmember.

Thats good, I heard that its got Cher in it as Batman, can't wait!

HE'$ RIGHT! I dig how he'z actually putting THOUGHT into a story & not just makin' the damn thing! GO NOLAN! wohoop.

Whaaat? The Last Crusade was good. And Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine are already signed for a third one, so Nolan better not leave them to Bret Ratner or I will become enraged on a severe level not seen since Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

#3: Nah, Bale's already said he'll only come back for a third movie if Nolan is directing which is actually bad news if they wanna plow ahead and do a third one anyway.

New director AND new lead actor? Recipe for disaster..

Oh come on. You know he will. Especially after this bout of ostentation.

How about Last Crusade? Return of the Jedi was alright as well. And the third Bourne movie. That was the best one!

the last crusade was bitchen, the bourn movie too, and the third harry potter is my favorite of all of them, and I like revenge of the sith cause the art direction was better...
this asshole HAS to make another batman!! i'll start a riot! damnit!!!

and I really liked the crystal skull movie, so he should make a 4th one too-
cause even if nolan makes 12 of them that suck they'll still be sooo much better then anyone could do with batman...

Screw him. After what he did to Harvey Dent I wouldn't care if they brought Uwe Boll to direct.

Return of the King anyone?

yeah... Nolan is right... i like the way he thinks... thanks Nolan for not thinking like other superhero movie directors... thanks a lot... i like it...

Some of you guys sound a bit desperate. Everyone knows Return of the Jedi was the worst of the old trilogy, Revenge of the Sith was just as bad as any other prequel, the third Harry Potter movie had huge plot holes and left out key plot elements from the novel (like explaining the whole "Looney, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs" thing), and the third Bourne movie was just a repeat of the other two...

But yeah, Return of the King and The Last Crusade were great.

Anyway, I'm not one of these Nolan-worshipper types, so I'm afraid this sounds an awful lot like a delaying tactic to me. Considering how unbelievable the plot of The Dark Knight was (Joker can apparently read peoples' minds and Harvey Dent goes from paragon to murderous madman in the blink of his lidless eye), I think what he's really saying is: "God, I don't want to do another one of those silly superhero movies again right now."

You see, this is why Nolan is one of my favorites. He is an artist who is more interested in developing his craft and delivering a fine tale than getting as much money as possible. He consistently delivers above average work. I say, if he decides not to do a third, he still ended the second one well enough to be left alone.

Sorry for double posting, but @#8 Sean,

Army of Darkness (Evil Dead 3) was the best trilogy ender ever made.

On another note, if he doesn't do it, then Micheal Bay will probably step in to completely destroy any amount of dignity or respect that the previous two movies had.

As for the Bourne movies, how can anybody even watch that crap, with Matt Damon no less...."Matt Damon".....

They might as well have that Malcom in the Middle guy out there acting like a secret agent, I think he'd be more believable...

Take away the Ewoks and Jedi is still better than any of the Star Wars prequals (eps 1,2,3)...

Last Crusade was entertaining, but at that point it's like "Hey Speilberg, we get it, your a jew, Hitler hated the jews, now quit basing all your fucking movies on how jews got fucked by Hitler)

Christ, I'm suprized he didn't have post WWII Nazi's trying to kill E.T.

For the love of...

Evil Dead 2 is the best in the series.
The Two Towers is the best in the series.
Revenge of the Empire is the best in the series.
All the Bourne movies are the same.
(Where's Bourne? "I'm right outside!")
The Last Crusade was better than Temple of Doom, but still not as good as the first. Also, the Nazis were used because they wanted to return to the plot... you know what? Fuck anyone hates Nazis, und ich komme aus Badem-Württemberg!

The third movie has never been the best of any series. And, seriously, after Heath Ledger's performance, the best they can hope for is a Return of the Jedi; Return of the King style quality ender to a trilogy. (Dark Knight Returns as the title will continue the theme).

We also won't know shit for years. Stop pawing like a dog at the door and get on with your lives.

#8 & #13

That is the funniest and yet most horrifying thing ever. An Uwe Boll directed Batman movie would make Schumacher's Batman movies look like the Godfather 1 & 2 by comparison.

#16 Lol!!! Amen.

Well, Nolan's question was "How many good third movies in a franchise can people name?" We are discussing third movies which are good ones, not the best of the franchise. So for those that said Jedi, Last Crusade, or any said movies, you are right.

@ #14, I thought it was all about Nazis because that was the time period during which the trilogy took place, and Jones is suppose to be all American, with all that time he spent gathering intelligence and as a spy - from the TV series.

@ #8, Just like you, I am not a fan of them killing Two Face, but Uwe Boll dude? Far greater crimes have been committed than what Nolan did to Harvey Dent.

I always though, and am still really hoping that the Batman franchise can be something like the Bond franchise. There is just so much story to tell. I want to see the whole Jason Todd Arc, throw in some Broken Bat, and hell, let's bring Hush into this eventually. But of course, I don't want to see just anyone do it though. Let's not go through the whole "Batman and Robin" thing again.
