Oct 2 2007 Hilary Duff Tackles Tough Race Issues Adorably

duff-tackles-race.jpg

I already knew Hilary Duff as a humanitarian when she graced us with the character of Lizzie McGuire, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, its various made-for-TV movies, and the accompanying songs to those movies--not to mention her pop albums and public appearances, where that equine grin lights up hearts--but now Hollywood Reporter tells me she's about to become a positive saint. With her newest comic role in Greta, the young actress plays to tackle the hottest topic of 1978, interracial dating!

Duff will play a young waitress who falls for the restaurant's cook from the wrong (black) side of the tracks. Her grandparents, sadly played by Ellen Burstyn and Michael Murphy, don't approve of the match because they're racists. I know, it sounds really good, right? Wait'll you hear the best part: their racist suspicions are confirmed upon finding out this fellow is indeed the criminal his skin color implied.

I think this thing is going to break down a lot of (barely present) barriers.

Sep 13 2007 Sydney White Poster Has Many Positive Attributes

sydney-white-poster.jpg

This poster for Amanda Bynes' teen comedy Sydney White is so good, I can barely decide what my favorite part is! Is it...

- the unique, one-of-a-kind white background/red text motif?
- that they've keenly avoided the implication that Sydney White endorses white supremacy by including a black guy?
- how subtly it alludes to the Snow White parallel?
- that, despite the obvious Snow White parallel, they seem to have confused portions with Cinderella and included evil sisters?
- that Amanda Bynes is "all grown up."

Aug 6 2007 Sydney White Trailer

Sydney White

Finally someone has made an original movie where, in an original story, a group of caricatured, snotty, blond, rich girls are taken down by a group of (original) nerd characters, all while an original pretty girl who befriends the nerds scores the unique attractive guy character that the lead original snotty girl wants. Why hadn't someone thought to combine these elements yet?

You can see it all in the above trailer for Sydney White, complete with the most insincere intro possible by Amanda Bynes.

May 22 2007 My Super Sweet 16: The Movie: The Trailer

Just when I thought Bratz: The Movie was sure to be my most anticipated movie of the year, in comes the trailer to My Super Sweet 16: The Movie to sweep me off my feet. Based on the MTV series of the same name (minus the movie part), MSS16:TM stars teen sensations Aly & AJ and features appearances by Hellogoodbye and Pretty Ricky!* It's like MTV ate my teenage girl dreams and this is their shit! Can you believe they're sending this straight to DVD?! But sadly, having seen the show, I did notice that the real-life Sweet 16 girls are much more ridiculous than anything conceived in this trailer.

*I have no idea who any of these people are.

May 11 2007 Bratz Trailer "4 Real"

bratz-are-bff.jpg
The Bratz describe their friendship longevity in three letters: BFF.

I've been vocal about my enthusiasm about seeing the Bratz doll line brought to screens, but I really think they missed the mark on this one. Though I'm not actually familiar with Bratz canon, I had assumed what made them so appealing was that they were these big time brats, mainly because their sexy big heads, lips and eyes allowed them the luxury. In this trailer, however, the four eponymous BFFs seem to act only marginally bratty, and actually reform their bratitude to take down the school's primary brat. As if!

The film's saving grace may be that the dialog is so littered with BFFs, OMGs and the like that it will become utterly dated within two years. Like this generation's Clueless, Bratz will be the 2007 time capsule of how our stupidest high school girls chatter.

See it here, 4 real.
