May 10 2007 ALL SEQUELS, ALL THE TIME!

"Quick, somebody beat it!"

If you're a big Hollywood exec, why take a chance on a new project? It's a safer bet to go with something that's already established and then milk that cow till it shits blood.

Here is just some of the sequel news that's floating around:
L.A. Confidential 2
Terminators 4-6
Step Up 2 [Ed. Note: Yeah, I hadn't heard of it either]
Pirates of the Caribbean 4
Fantastic Four 3
Superman 2 (or is it 6?)
Hostel 2
Shrek 4
Sin City 2
Indiana Jones 5
Harry Potter 6
Rambo 4
Lost Boys 2

And I'm sure I missed a few. I didn't even bother with spinoffs and remakes.

May 9 2007 Rodriguez Deciding Between Future and Past

land-of-the-lost.jpg
Sleestaks from the horrific drug-induced nightmare of Sid and Marty Krofft's Land of the Lost.

Despite poor numbers from Grindhouse, The Hollywood Reporter claims Robert Rodriguez is still in high demand, with the director currently deciding between two future projects (in addition to Sin City 2): a live-action remake of The Jetsons or a Will Ferrell remake of Sid and Marty Krofft's Land of the Lost. Strangely, no one is mentioning releasing both titles as a sequel to Grindhouse entitled Irrelevant-anachronistic-retro-television-House. Rodriguez could turn Jetsons into an action-packed, gory thrill ride (in 3-D), while collaborator Quentin Tarantino could alternate the exciting dino-action of Land of the Lost with long, tedious conversations where the Sleestaks debate why Silver Surfer is ultimately cooler than a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

But Jesus, please don't really.

Mar 27 2007 Depp and Banderas Headed to Sin City?

depp-sin-city.jpg

Might Johnny Depp and Antonio Banderas be in Sin City 2? Yes, they might. In an interview, director Robert Rodriguez said Depp was interested in the Jackie Boy role that eventually went to Benecio del Toro but now may play the character of Wallace. Meanwhile, a meeting between Frank Miller and Antonio Banderas now has the writer/co-director convinced he should find a role for the cologne baron (Antonio Banderas makes cologne). It sounds like Rodriguez is trying to bring as many of his mainstays as he can into the sequel. Also, the part of Sin City will now be played by Mexico.

Jul 19 2006 Renaissance Trailer

renaissance-french.jpg

Set in the near future, Renaissance is the French's attempt at the science fiction genre of "corporation-driven totalitarian rule with an obsession towards youth and beauty." Using sophisticated technology, they've created a world inhabited by computer-generated characters with the sharp black & white contrast of Sin City. The style looks great for the story, but I worry about future applications. If they start doing this to porno, bare breasts will probably look like Garfield's eyes.

Mar 14 2006 Angelina Jolie Wanted for Sin City 2

jolie-sin-city-2.jpgWhile it's been rumored for a while that Angelina Jolie was being sought after for a role in the next Sin City film, Rosario Dawson has now confirmed that director Robert Rodriguez is looking to cast the actress as the lead, saying:

The film's been kind of postponed because Robert has been interested in Angelina Jolie for the lead. But she's very pregnant right now. So that's putting an understandable hold on the film.

This seems like the most obvious casting possible. With her full lips and curves, she already looks more like a Frank Miller babe than anyone in the previous cast. While Rodriguez will use the pregnancy down-time to further prepare for shooting, Jolie will use the break to adopt four more kids and ruin another marriage.

Dec 27 2005 Frank Miller wants five Sin City films

sin-city-talk.jpgFrank Miller has stated that he's working on the script for Sin City 2 and is hoping that there will be a total of five Sin City films.

"I'm finishing the script right now for Sin City 2 - I can't wait to get back behind the camera. If I have my way, there's going to be five [films] - but that's if I have my way! Five would take care of all the graphic novels - but there's new material that I'm writing for the second one. There'll probably also be a separate graphic novel that I'll do. It's a Nancy Callahan story that I've been wanting to do."

My only complaint with the first Sin City was that all the stories felt too rushed, so if they spread the rest out among five films I'm sure they'll be great. Plus if they're sticking with Jessica Alba, I don't see how a Nancy Callahan story could possibly go wrong. Two hours of Jessica Alba playing a good-hearted stripper? We might as well hand over the Academy Award for Best Actress now.
