Hey, 20-somethings: time to stop hogging all the lack of direction! Being in your early thirties is quirky and smothered in non-diegetic music too! Example: this trailer for Away We Go, directed by Sam Mendes, written by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, starring John Krasinki, Maya Rudolph, et al.

Oct 30 2008 Mendes Giving 'Preacher' the Ol' Moving Picture Treatment

Variety reports that Sam Mendes will direct a film adaptation of Preacher--one of those comic books you're always reading:

Sam Mendes will direct a bigscreen adaptation of the supernatural graphic novel "Preacher" for Columbia Pictures.

Created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, graphic novel focuses on the preacher of a Texas town, who is struggling to get by and is driven only by his strong moral sense. When the city is decimated by an otherworldly force, he embarks on a journey across the country to take on the evil.

I can't wait until religious groups get mad at this. It's inevitable. Comics slip under the radar, but never movies. As soon as an actual preacher finds out about this and learns that it's not a Kirk Cameron preacher-celebration piece, he'll be rounding up the congregation and heading to the theater with his "God hates Preacher (the movie, not actual preachers)" signs. Better off just changing the name to Man of Unidentified Profession Who Happens to be Wearing a Collar and seeing if you can't slip it past them for a while.

Sep 22 2008 'Revolutionary Road' Trailer Will Shatter Your 'In Titanic, What if Jack Lived???' Fantasies

Looks like anyone looking for a return to the Kate/Leo romance of Titanic is in for some disappointment. In this trailer for Sam Mendes's Revolutionary Road, there is no naked charcoal drawing, no king of the world yelling, no breaking socioeconomic boundaries in the name of transatlantic lust. These two are constantly yelling at each other, like real couples, instead of being the most in love humans have ever been, like fictional couples on boats. What I'm saying is this looks much better than Titanic.

Mar 7 2008 Krasinkski, Rudolph Join Cast of a Movie

Can you believe actors are still being used in movies? Despite startling advances in android artificial intelligence, holograms, and computer graphics, each year countless human thespians are paid a predetermined price to pretend they're someone else, all for our entertainment. The latest stars to find parts in such a production? John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph--perhaps better known as Jim from The Office and some terrible impression of a diva on SNL--have been cast in a new comedy by director Sam Mendes, with a script by author Dave Eggers and his wife Vendela Vida. This untitled picture is shaping up to be more than adequate, no?
