Jul 25 2008 Holy Crap, Aronofsky is Directing 'RoboCop'
Any of the (few) times a nearly-anonymous girl has asked me if I want to go back to her place, I've had basically the same internal reaction every time: "Wait, really? I mean, I guess it makes some sense, but wow, I didn't think it was actually going to happen. Man, this is great. Who would have thought?" I bring this up because that's approximately the same conversation that when through my head when I heard the news today that Darren Aronofsky is doing a Robocop movie. From Variety:
Darren Aronofsky has signed on to direct and David Self is penning a new installment about the hero whose tagline is "part man, part machine and all cop.""RoboCop," which is being fast-tracked for a 2010 release, becomes the first potential tentpole to come together since Mary Parent took the reins of MGM in March. Aronofsky's involvement has been one of the worst kept secrets, with rumors rampant in the blogosphere that "The Fountain" helmer was eyeing the project.
"Now don't screw this up, me!" (Me being Darren Aronofsky, in this case.)
(Wayne sent this in. So thanks, Wayne.)
Jun 11 2008 Possibly, Sort of, What the New RoboCop Might Look Like
From the currently underway Licensing International Expo in New York, here's the first look at a poster for MGM's remake of RoboCop. So what should we hate first? How strange it is that the head is completely disembodied? That it looks like an old Battlestar Galactica Cylon but with a random, slightly smirking mouth edited on? The broad idea that this is being done at all? I don't know where to start.
(Thanks to Brad for tipping.)

Mar 17 2008 'RoboCop' Remake Becomes More Likely
There's an old adage in Hollywood that goes something like this: "When the idea cup runneth dry, repeatedly punch the audience in the stomach until their insides relent, and they regurgitate enough of that sweet, bile-mixed idea juice that you can use it again." At least I assume this wise proverb exists, because otherwise why would my stomach be so sore at the announcement of a RoboCop remake?
From AICN comes this peak at MGM's fall/winter catalog:
MGM will enter its new phase of evolution by focusing on its major movie franchises highlighted by JAMES BOND and PINK PANTHER sequels, THE HOBBIT, THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2, THE OUTER LIMITS, ROBOCOP, DEATH WISH and FAME, among others.
Well, at least maybe now they can get rid of all that annoying social commentary from the original that detracted from the testosterone-driven purity of the notion of a "Robo-Cop". A helmeted Vin Diesel shooting some motherf***ers while delivering monotone quips is clearly the better, more relevant vision of cyborg law enforcement.
