Aug 11 2008 'Dark Knight' Continues Argument That No Other Movies Should Exist

dark-knight-batman-cuts.jpg

Guess what movies made more or less money than other movies this weekend! I'll just tell you:

1. The Dark Knight - You have to feel bad for every other movie that isn't The Dark Knight right now. You can almost see the guys down at Swing Vote HQ: "God, Batman again!? We could've been eighth!" ($26 million.)

2. Pineapple Express - It's only fair that a stoner comedy, like an actual stoner, would fail to live up to expectations. $22.4 million.

3. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - $16.1 million.

4. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 - $10.8 million, setting a new benchmark for future pant-based movie sequels.

5. Step Brothers - $8.9 million, with attendance still strong among people who don't get sick of anything.

Here are this weekend's box office results. Please copy all pertinent information to your journals at home.

1. The Dark Knight - A $43.8 million weekend pushed the film's total gross to just under $400 million, putting it in a likely position to push past the $461 million-grossing Star Wars as the film the most nerds have jacked off to.

2. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - Desire to see Brendan Fraser and his fake hair shoot mummies is down 33% from seven years ago, with this latest chapter only bringing in $42.5 million. Either our economy is that much worse or our society is that much better.

3. Step Brothers - $16.3 million, making it the highest grossing Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly-as-retards comedy until the next one.

4. Mamma Mia! - Your mom keeps going back to see this over and over, earning it another $13.1 million.

5. Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D - $6.9 million. Note that this is the second Brendan Fraser movie in this list. Why is this happening?

Jun 23 2008 'The Mummy 3' Trailer, Sponsored by Papa Johns

mummy-dragon-emperor-traile.jpg

If you've been to the Papa John's Pizza website in the last few days (I don't know how you wouldn't have been, but I'll indulge the faint possibility), you'll have noticed that the page has been updated with the trailer for The Mummy 3: All Wrapped Up in China. It's a perfect fit: Brendan Fraser and mummies in general are known for their insatiable love of pizza--coining such phrases as, "Cowabunga, it's pizza time!" and "I really love Papa John's pizza!"--making them obvious spokesmen for the company.

Anyway, the trailer is here. It contains many stupid things, most of them in the form of Xena-level CGI and forced jokes from the mouth of Brendan Fraser. I found myself mostly annoyed at the poor military leadership of the Dragon Emperor, having his undead legions fire arrows at the rival army of skeletons. Arrows against skeletons?! Good luck with that.

Apr 29 2008 'Mummy 3' Teaser Poster, and a Pretty Appropriate Reaction

mummy-3-intl-poster.jpg

I didn't really know what to say about this one, outside of describing it as the image of a screaming mummy head meant to promote a terrible mummy sequel to a terrible mummy movie. So I showed it to a friend, who gave me his unprovoked reaction:

"HELP MEH!!!" That's f***ing awesome. But then you see Brendan Fraser at the top.

Well said.

Nov 14 2007 'Mummy 3' Cursing Us With More Images

mummy-jet-li.jpg

Filmz.ru has a bunch of new shots from The Mummy 3: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor for the fans of embalmed corpses/Brendan Fraser/Jet Li/masochism. As a warning, those who said a film couldn't be made using old costume pieces from Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes and Tyra Banks's hair extensions are in for a sad shock.

Oct 23 2007 First Shot of Jet Li in Mummy 3 is Astounding

mummy-3-jet-li.jpg

When I heard Jet Li was going to have a role in the mummiest movie of the coming year, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, I couldn't wait to see what kind of villain the actor would portray.

Would he be a Wrath of Khan-style cunning mind bent on vengeance to Brendan Fraser's nearly-retarded adventurer Kirk? More of a sadistic madman Joker to Fraser's boobish Batman? A perfectly-matched foil, like Moriarty to an idiot Holmes?

Oh. It turns out he jumps around doing martial arts. I suppose that makes sense.

Oct 19 2007 Go Behind-the-Scenes to Envelope Edge on 'Mummy 3'

mummy-3-behind-the-scenes.jpg

Hearing director Rob Cohen speak so seriously about his filming techniques and methods for inspiring actors in The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor reminds me of a child wrenching a Pac-Man joystick while the screen flashes "insert coin." Should someone tell him?

My favorite quote: "That's what I like to do is push the edge of my own envelope and, hopefully, the envelope envelope." No doubt you will, Rob. With you at the helm, a third Mummy is less a film, more a cultural revolution, particularly in regards to the edge of the envelope envelope.

See said edge below the cut.

Oct 3 2007 'Mummy 3' Director Delivers Unsolicited Images

maria-bello-mummy.jpg

On his blog, RobCohenTheMummy.com (which sounds like a sad The Mummy fan's AOL screen name), director Rob Cohen has posted some images from The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. As the name implies, the film hopes to capitalize on the vague American interest in Asian culture created by Abercrombie & Fitch t-shirts and Chinese lanterns by introducing Jet Li as an Asian mummy.

Above is the first image of Maria Bello as Evelyn. If you're anything like me, your reaction will be "who's Evelyn?" It turns out that was the role Rachel Weisz mercifully dropped after the first two Mummies. You probably know the part as "the big buffoon's British idiot girlfriend."

More can be found on Cohen's site.
