Oct 16 2009 New Diane Keaton/Jack Nicholson Movie Confuses Me

its-complicated-poster.jpg

I don't get it. Why are Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson being played by Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin? Nancy Meyers is getting so post-modern.

Sep 30 2009 New 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' Trailer: The Cuss You Won't Watch This

fantastic-mr-fox-trailer-2.jpg

New trailer for Wes Anderson's The Fantastic Mr. Fox, people. Let it wiggle into that fox-in-a-corduroy-blazer-shaped hole in your heart and fill it with stop-motion love:

Jul 30 2009 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' Trailer: Kids' Movies Are Suddenly Really Great

fantastic-mr-fox-trailer.jpg

Oh, if only to be a child again. Not me as a child--I was an idiot who spent most of his time re-enacting scenes from Ghostbusters--but a child with discerning enough taste to recognize and enjoy that this fall marks a quality family film renaissance. In October comes Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, and in November we get Wes Anderson's adaptation of The Fantastic Mr. Fox--a film that places the director's wit and stylized direction in a realm more accepting of abstraction: the world of Rankin/Bass-like stop-motion animation.

We've already seen how good Wild Things looks, and now a trailer for Fox has finally been released. It's basically Roald Dahl's Bottle Rocket:

Apr 29 2009 'Julie & Julia' Trailer: Holy Cats, It Mentions Blogging!

julie-julia-trailer.jpg

Nora Ephron, the writer/director responsible for repeatedly informing you Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are the perfect couple, has made a movie in which Meryl Streep plays a Julia Child impersonator and Amy Adams plays surrogate Meg Ryan. If that's the kind of thing you might be up for, here's the trailer:

Dec 23 2008 'Doubt' has six Critic's Choice Award nominations, five Golden Globe nominations, won heaps of praise from critics, stars some of our best living actors...

But it seems like it might make me confront the widespread corruption within the Catholic Church, my own feelings of uncertainty, and generally make me think a lot. Thanks but no thanks. Now what's this thing with Adam Sandler and gumball rain?

Sep 15 2008 'Doubt' Looks Like the Best Church-Based Homosexual Pedophilia Accusation Movie of the Year

doubt-trailer-streep-hoffma.jpg

Here's the trailer for Doubt, starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and loads of shouting. It's directed by the same guy who did Joe Versus the Volcano, but I feel confident it will win more acclaim than Joe Versus the Volcano, and will eventually replace that film in the Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks DVD value pack, placing it alongside You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle despite not starring either Tom Hanks or Meg Ryan. It's just that powerful.

Aug 7 2008 Meryl Streep: Doin' Some Things

meryl-streep.jpg

1. Meryl is in talks to play a lead in a yet-untitled Nancy Meyers romantic comedy that only moms will watch, but they'll really watch it.

2. Meryl is currently recording a lead role in Wes Anderson's The Fantastic Mr. Fox, joining Anjelica Huston and giving the productions loads of classy older lady power.

3. Meryl is forming a muscle car gang called "The Streep Rods," and she'll fucking kill you if you look at her wrong.

Thanks to Variety and imagined knowledge for these facts.

Feb 28 2008 'Dark Matter' Trailer Reveals It's a Serial Killer Movie

dark-matter-trailer.jpg

At what point in the film will Dark Matter turn from a fish-out-of-water drama, following a Chinese cosmology prodigy's inability to conform to a university's political hierarchy, to a serial-killer-on-the-loose story? If the trailer gives us any indication, somewhere around the last quarter, when the rapid-fire cuts, mad flailing, and negative images start up. I have to admit, making it seem like I might see an immigrant go on a murderous rampage does make me want to see the film more, but couldn't they find a way to imply he might be a ghost too, or that he and Aidan Quinn are actually the same person? That kind of stuff really amps me up.

Jan 17 2008 AM Poster Post: The Fake Plot to 'Mamma Mia!'

mamma-mia-streep-poster.jpg

In Mamma Mia!, Meryl Streep steals a sorcerer's (Pierce Brosnan) magic boa, the only flamboyant accessory capable of time travel. When it's waved in the air, half of an antiqued wooden portal is opened, allowing Meryl to see into her past. Unfortunately, a rift in the space-time continuum ends up dividing Sweden from pop music, sending the members of ABBA into various alternate futures. Can Meryl get the group back together before pop music's history is irreversibly destroyed? (You can tell this will happen because the cover keeps fading from the ABBA record Meryl carries around, like with the photo in Back to the Future.)

Nov 1 2007 Meryl Streep Wins Preemptive Oscar as Julia Child

julia-child-meryl-streep.jpg

Should someone win an Oscar for doing a goofy impression of Julia Child that probably won't be as good as the one Dan Aykroyd did 30 years ago? Probably not. But knowing Meryl Streep, she probably will now that she's been cast as the famous chef in the comedy Julia & Julia.

Other actors will earn nominations for heart-wrenching, dramatic monologues that bring audiences to tears, but Meryl will walk away with the win because she wore a wig and delivered jokes in a frumpy, high-pitched voice, and maybe held up a fish.

Then again, I guess she was only nominated for acting like a bitchy caricature in The Devil Wears Prada.

Jul 2 2007 Lions for Lambs Teaser Trailer

lions-for-lambs-teaser.jpg

Though Robert Redford's head is looking more and more like Robert Redford's hair wearing a Robert Redford mask made from an old baseball glove, he shows he's still got his directorial and acting chops hidden within in Lions for Lambs. Add Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep along with a timely political theme and you've got a film that's got Oscars circling it like the vultures that circle Robert Redford's aforementioned weathered head.

Watch the trailer here and wonder what the hell is with the soundtrack.
