Oct 28 2009 New 'Shutter Island' Trailer: Leo's Gone Crazy!

shutter-island-trailer-2.jpg

New trailer for Martin Scorsese's latest and Leonardo DiCaprio's most recent somewhat convincing accent! And something about these scenes tells me Leo's investigation into a criminally insane asylum isn't going as planned. In particular, the scene where he's cradling Michelle Williams before she crumbles into a pile of ash. That's just something you can't plan for, even if you are visiting an insane asylum:

Jun 11 2009 Leonardo DiCaprio in a Mental Hospital -- FOR THE CRIMINALLY INSANE!

Martin Scorsese has got Leonardo DiCaprio doing funny voices again! This time it's for Shutter Island, Scosese's foray into the the crazy-spooky-shit-in-a-mental-hospital fare usually reserved for straight-to-video horror starring lesser Baldwin brothers. Take a look:

Apr 13 2009 Hand-Drawny 'Brothers Bloom' Poster

brothers-bloom-poster.jpg

The Brothers Bloom has been on my movies-I'll-put-forth-effort-to-see radar since the trailer debuted last year, and now writer/director Rian Johnson (Brick!) has revitalized my interest for the May release with a new, hand-drawn poster by his cousin. I'd say the stylized, purposefully antiquated take on the floating heads standard is pretty charming, even if Adrien Brody does look like he belongs in the background of a Scorsese film. Well done, Zach Johnson.

And here's a newish trailer:

Dec 12 2008 This 'Brothers Bloom' is Taking FOREVER

brothers-bloom-trailer.jpg

Remember how good The Brothers Bloom looks? In August, when the trailer came out, I was so ready to let this movie kiss me come January. Now I apparently have to wait even longer. Writer/director Rian Johnson has confirmed on his message board that the film has been pushed back to May:

Summit is announcing today that they're pushing Bloom to limited on May 15th, wide on May 29th. January is crowded with an insane amount of Oscar movies (some being released, some expanding) and Summit decided that Bloom would play better as counter-programming to a few summer movies than to a few dozen oscar ones.

I'd be lying if I didn't admit to being bummed. I want you guys to see the movie, it feels a little like I've been movie-pregnant for 9 months and my movie-doctor has just told me he'd like me to wait another 6 months before movie-delivering. (Note to anyone who has or will at some point carry an actual real life baby: I only feel like this a little.)

But January is definitely crowded, and May may prove a better spot, so there's logic to Summit's move. So May it is. Sorry guys.

The move puts Bloom up against Angels & Demons, Bruno, and the birthday of actor Chazz Palminteri. I can skip Angels & Demons and Bruno, but I'm sorry, I have to go to Chazz's birthday. I already sent back my Facebook reply and everything.

Dec 8 2008 'What Doesn't Kill You' Poster is a Gunman Composed of Actor Heads

what-doesnt-kill-you-poster.jpg

When did Ethan Hawke become a meth head? I don't remember watching Gattaca and being afraid the protagonist would run out of his trailer waving a pistol at me. Either he's gotten amazingly good at transforming himself for roles or he's addicted to methamphetamines. So well done/get help (whichever applies).

Aug 26 2008 'Brothers Bloom' Trailer is Really Good but Now Old

brothers-bloom-trailer.jpg

A month or so ago, The Brothers Bloom trailer charmed me with its Dirty Rotten Scoundrels/Shooting Fish caper by way of Wes Anderson feel, because I'm a sucker for that kind of crap. Somehow I forgot to post it then, so here it is now, aged but still worth spending two minutes with, like grandma. It's by the guy who did Brick!

Apr 4 2008 'Blindness' Trailer Envisions World Without Blog Skimming

blindness-trailer-moore.jpg

Sure, the dismal events of 28 Days Later painted a grim vision of a future overrun by a spreading zombie plague, but man, wouldn't it also suck to be blind? Fernando Meirelles offers just such an experience, placing Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo in a world where a sudden blindness-inducing virus threatens the population's retinas. It asks a chilling question: how will Moore sell Revlon cosmetics if no one can see her ageless, near-translucent skin? I have no idea.

As you'd expect from the director of City of God and The Constant Gardner, it looks both beautiful and frightening while managing to steer clear of becoming a cautionary tale of over-masturbation. I suggest watching.

- David Dobkin, director of The Wedding Crashers and Fred Claus announced he's taken over the reigns of the Flash movie hoped to spin-off from Justice League of America. - On that note, Greg Berlanti is lined up to direct the Green Lantern movie, pitting the Lantern in a tough race against The Flash for critical and commercial failure. [Variety]

- Cuba Gooding Jr. has joined John Carter's action thriller The Way of War, with executive producer Nick Thurlow adding, "With his intensity and ability to take a character to the edge, the part is tailor-made for Cuba." Is that assessment based on Snow Dogs, Boat Trip, or Daddy Day Camp? [Variety Hollywood Reporter]

- Mark Ruffalo, Ethan Hawke, and Amanda Peet will star in Brian Goodman's autobiographical crime drama Real Men Cry. Telling a true-to-life Boston crime saga, it will be the 50th film of the year to do so. [Hollywood Reporter]
