Aug 18 2009 Quentin Tarantino's Favorite Movies Since He's Been Making Movies

Surprising things about this list:

1. Despite the self-imposed 1992-2009 restriction, you'd think he'd have somehow found a way to work in an obscure '70s kung fu film.

2. Referring to his contemporary as "M. Night Shamalamadingdong."

3. Half his selections. I can't imagine many "top film" lists contain both Dogville and Friday. That's an appetizer menu with caviar and a Bloomin' Onion.

Transcribed list, for easier Netflix queue adding, under the cut.

Jan 6 2009 The Closest I'll Come to a Year-End List Thing

matt-robinson-ricky-gervais.jpg

I don't really get into the whole end-of-year "top ten best/worst films" thing. It seems like a lot of pointless work to summarize the year into ten good or bad things when I've already spent the entire year telling you how there were probably ten good things and everything else bad things. Also, I'm a fool, so I'd definitely be wrong about most everything, and you don't need my fool opinion stacked on the thousands of others--particularly when there are "Most Insanely Apple-esque Silverhawk Vehicles" lists to get to.

But what I will do is point you to the "top ten best/worst film" list I've most enjoyed reading so far: this one, by Ricky Gervais's writing/directing collaborator on This Side of the Truth, Matt Robinson. Though I don't entirely agree with his rankings (that's what makes lists fun?), his arguments for them almost convince me. I wouldn't normally place Ghost Town as a top-ten movie, but when I'm told "the ending makes me well up with tears like a little girl-gay," I'll maybe reconsider, and start using that phrase.

So read it, and feel free to mention any other reasonable year-end movie lists in the comments.

Nov 20 2008 Posters That Are Extremely Beautiful and, Typically, Delicate

savages-poster-ware.jpg

Smashing Magazine has posted a list of what they're calling 40 Exquisite Independent Film Posters (via Digg), a showcase of indie film one-sheets that dared to take a more stylized approach than the stock "floating heads" approach. I'm not sure I agree with their assessment that the face of a concerned skater kid on the Paranoid Park poster is necessarily "exquisite", per se, but it was nice to be reminded of beauties like the above Chris Ware-designed Savages poster once more before death. Before you go, remember to grab a pen and paper so you can jot down which you want to pick up at your campus's next obscure film poster sale.

Dec 21 2007 Christmas Watching Recommendations For a More Christmasey Christmas

charlie-brown-christmas.jpg

In the spirit of things, I've posted a completely un-definitive list of Christmasey movies and specials to watch this weekend. It was admittedly thrown together in the last hour (thanks to those who helped), so leave anything I missed in the comments. The omission of Home Alone, It's a Wonderful Life, and Chevy Chase Christmas was not a mistake.

I will be back Wednesday.

Nov 28 2007 Mr. Skin Names Top Film Nude Scenes of 2007

natalie-portman-nude-hotel.jpg

At long last, Mr. Skin, the internet's leading authority on how to watch movies like the big pervert in 8th grade--finding and awkwardly discussing movie nude scenes, however sad and brief--has released his annual list of the top twenty naked ladies in film.

Here's the list, but make sure to go check out Mr. Skin's page for incisive observations like: "Lucy Liu affords four different chances for you to be a looky-loo at her lickable nay-nays." What is a looky-loo? One who looks at nay-nays, I'm guessing.

1. Marissa Tomei - Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead

2. Keeley Hazell - Cashback
3. Natalie Portman - Hotel Chevalier
4. Christina Ricci - Black Snake Moan
5. Sienna Miller - Factory Girl
6. Roselyn Sanchez - Yellow
7. Malin Ackerman - The Heartbreak Kid
8. Eva Mendes - We Own the Night
9. Lena Headey - 300
10. Stormy Daniels and Nautica Thorne - Knocked Up
11. Alexa Davalos - Feast of Love
12. Chelan Simmons - Good Luck Chuck
13. Wei Tang - Lust, Caution
14. Ashley Judd - Bug
15. Olivia Wilder - Alpha Dog
16. Ana Claudia Talancon - Alone With Her
17. Danielle Harris - Halloween
18. Heather Matarazzo - Hostel: Part II

Seriously, Heather Matarazzo? From Welcome to the Dollhouse?? Whatever you say, Mr. Skin.

Oct 9 2007 Best Movie Boobs Remind Us of Cancer

Did you know this month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month? I know, it always sneaks up on me, too. Luckily, FilmThreat has reminded me the only way they know I'll pay attention--through the objectification of women--with their list of "The 50 Best Breasts in Movie History."

They've thankfully attached clips of the noteworthy breasts to each entry, in case you aren't familiar with a particular rack, but I found the subtitles attached to some of the women's names far more fascinating. Are you familiar with Jane Russell's chest? Well, maybe you should be, because according to FilmThreat, she has "million dollar mammaries." Don't you love how the busty Jayne Mansfield (above) "brings on the home-grown cow juice"? And how had no one yet thought to refer to Italian breasts as "Neapolitan knockers"? Congratulations, Sophia Loren--you've got 'em!

Jun 21 2007 AFI Re-Decides Best Movies

citizen-kane-afi-top.jpg
Citizen Kane again won "Least Surprising Choice for Best Movie."

Ten years after creating the first definitive list of the best movies, the American Film Institute has re-examined the list, deciding many movies are either much better or worse than originally thought. Surprisingly, something called Citizen Kane retained the top position, with something called A Godfather and the nonsensically titled Casablanca pulling in second and third. Like weather phenomena? This Gone With the Wind flick might be something you should check out--it's the sixth best movie ever! They've really made some unpredictable, out-there choices this year.

See what was added or removed under the cut, and the full list here.

Mar 7 2007 25 Best Movie Posters Ever

anatomy-of-a-murder.jpg
This image will ruin the surprise of #1 for you.

Premiere Magazine, which just announced it would no longer be printing its issues, has posted a pretty interesting look at what they've dubbed the 25 best movie posters ever. Looking at the list, it's obvious that, as usual, the mainstream media blatantly ignored some of the great film posters just because they featured spread or shaved vaginas. F***ing conservatives.
