Sep 22 2009 'Valentine's Day' Trailer: Another VoltRom-Com Fuses Several Romantic Comedies Into One Powerful Monster

valentines-day-trailer.jpg

Can you believe that, come Valentine's Day, it will have been almost exactly one year since we last saw roughly a dozen celebrities of various caliber crammed into a single romantic comedy in which every other piece of dialogue has to reiterate the title? (See He's Just Not That Into You, web-slingers.) Thankfully, that will be the exact day that a new VoltRom-Com takes the throne, appropriately titled Valentines Day. This one manages to cram in two Roberts (Julia, Emma), two Grey's Anatomi, Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, George Lopez, Shirley MacLaine, Queen Latifah, and the two celebrities most noted for being "so fucking hot" before the arrival of Megan Fox (Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel).

The trailer feels like watching an Oscars montage reel for The Year in Romantic Comedy. Or, maybe more accurately, like simultaneously hearing the scream of every single ugly friend that ever had to listen to their extremely attractive friend complain about relationships that ever existed:

Jun 29 2009 Another 'Invention of Lying' Trailer: See Lying's US-tailored Invention

Remember the Invention of Lying trailer on Friday? Good, because I'd hate having to explain the premise again, and there's now a domestic trailer for the comedy.

I particularly like Louis CK's reaction to Gervais's claim that he's an Eskimo. I thought I was the only one to ever express an unnaturally positive reaction to learning they've accidentally befriended an Inuk:

Feb 13 2009 Matthew McConaughey Even Smugger With Scarf On

ghosts-girlfriends-past-pos.jpg

My issue with this movie isn't so much with it's Christmas Carol-with-girlfriends concept as much as that they stopped there. Yes, Matthew McConaughey should be haunted by his ex-girlfriends, but he should also be haunted by everything else: Fool's Gold, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, all the other Matthew McCaughmedies, his hair highlights, that fucking scarf, the bongos resting discreetly at his feet, the ghost of shirtlessness past. It's not fair the rest of the world feels those terrible presences while he stands around grinning.

Jan 29 2009 'Scrooged' Loses Best Modern Adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol' Crown

I just got a late submission to the Invent a Horrible Christmas Movie Contest from a couple months ago. Sadly, it's too late for it to win, but it's also too good not to share:

"Ghosts of Girlfriends Past - A modern re-imagining of A Christmas Carol in which Matthew McConaughey is visited by several ghosts that force him to review the numerous relationships of his past, present and future, teaching the consummate bachelor to change his philandering ways and settle down with his true love (Jennifer Garner)."

That entry comes from New Line Cinema, and they even made a trailer:

Nov 30 2007 'Juno' International Trailer Still Overwhelmingly Clever

juno-international-trailer.jpg

With all the hugely-positive reviews, movie of the year mentions, and comparisons to indie-smash Little Miss Sunshine (presupposing that Little Miss Sunshine is God), it's practically sacrilege not to dump praise over Juno like it just won a football game.

Isn't anyone else sort of put off by how uber-witty and pop-culture driven most of the dialogue is, and how it's delivered so unbelievably dryly? This international trailer did nothing to curb my fears that it's basically a well-shot Friends episode, where everyone has clever reactions to every possible situation, yet everyone seems unaffected by the constant barrage of witticisms.

Then again, it was great pretty much every time Jason Bateman or Michael Cera were onscreen, so maybe I'll withhold some judgement until I see it, or at least until I'm inundated with people quoting lines.
