Sep 30 2009 Ned (Of '& Stacy'), The Philanthropist, and Strong Join 'John Carter' (of 'Mars')

Get out your John Carter of Mars notebook and a #2 pencil, because I've got some new names for you to add to the cast list of the film:

Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy and Mark Strong have joined the cast of joined “John Carter of Mars,” Disney’s adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series that Andrew Stanton is directing.

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins topline the production, which centers on a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where he becomes embroiled with the planet’s warring people.

Church plays Tal Hajus, an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler.

Purefoy plays Kantos Kan, the captain of the Xavarian, the kingdom of Helium’s grand warship. Strong is Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems with godlike status.

Right. Tal Hajus the Thark; Kantos Kan, captain of Helium's famous Xavarian warship; and Matai Shang, the godlike ruler of the Thems. You get all that? OK, good. Because I'm delirious with fever and need to lie down for the rest of the day after trying to process those words. (Seriously.)

Jul 27 2009 'Solomon Kane' Poster: Despite Appearances, Not Van Helsing

Continuing the recent trend of every action hero looking like Tom Petty/WWE's The Undertaker, here's the new poster for Solomon Kane.

It was probably a good idea hiding James Purefoy's face: I now so strongly regard him as "guy in that really obnoxious ad campaign for The Philanthropist" that I don't know how I'll ever buy him in the role of a brooding Puritan. (He's a brooding Puritan, right? I'm just assuming.)

Oct 2 2007 Some Other Crap That Happened...

- The nation breaths a collective sigh of relief as Comedy Central renews Mind of Mencia. Carlos Mencia then steals that sigh to use for a joke about "beaners." [Hollywood Reporter]

- Rome's Marc Antony, James Purefoy, has been cast as puritan swordsman Solomon Kane in a movie to be made from the stories of Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard. This is relevant if you have tons of Magic cards or your favorite band is Rush. [Reuters]

- Steven Moffat will write Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg's collaborative Tintin trilogy, adapting Herge's comic strip. However, the headline 'Tintin Goes to DinDin!' will still be written by US Weekly, referring to whatever actor that plays Tintin eating out with a hot young starlet. [Hollywood Reporter]

- The Wall-E trailer I posted yesterday is now available in higher quality video and in English, the highest quality language. [Yahoo!]

- Javier Bardem is set to play Pablo Escobar with Christian Bale as a Delta Force commander sent out to kill him in the biopic Killing Pablo. Hate to ruin the ending for you, but the film's title is in no way ironic. [Variety]
