Oct 28 2009 New 'Shutter Island' Trailer: Leo's Gone Crazy!

shutter-island-trailer-2.jpg

New trailer for Martin Scorsese's latest and Leonardo DiCaprio's most recent somewhat convincing accent! And something about these scenes tells me Leo's investigation into a criminally insane asylum isn't going as planned. In particular, the scene where he's cradling Michelle Williams before she crumbles into a pile of ash. That's just something you can't plan for, even if you are visiting an insane asylum:

Sep 28 2009 'Nightmare on Elm Street' Trailer: That Bad Dream Man is Back on That Suburban Street

nightmare-elm-st-teaser.jpg

Learn Freddy Krueger's origin (again) and watch him menacingly drag his hand-claw over a variety of metal surfaces (again) with this new trailer for Nightmare on Elm Street (Again). As much as I'm opposed to this pointless retreading, I do appreciate they made his head look more "hey, I got horribly burned!" than the old look, which was more, "hey, someone threw an entire pizza at my face, and now it's slowly dripping off!"

Jul 23 2009 'Nightmare on Elm Street' Teaser Poster: Some Sort of Claw-Hand Man is Coming

His face seems to be obscured in darkness, so I'm not sure who this character is. Probably one of those Wolverines you like so much.

Jul 22 2009 Freddy Krueger Still Looks Like Freddy Krueger

nightmare-elm-st-krueger.jpg

Providing some reassurance for Nightmare on Elm Street purists (if such a thing could exist in a post-Freddy vs. Jason age) worried about changes in the upcoming remake, Platinum Dunes released the above shot of the new, seemingly-unaltered Freddy, Jackie Earle Haley. Of course, the face is still hidden, so there's still a 50/50 shot one of the producers decided it would be "really cool" if Krueger's face was horribly disfigured save for this totally awesome goatee he manages to keep groomed.

Apr 6 2009 Jackie Earle Haley Officially Creating Nightmares on Specific Street

jackie-earle-haley.jpg

Adding to his geek cred and ensuring him a signing booth at comic cons in case this acting this doesn't work out, Jackie Earle Haley has officially signed on to wear a blade-covered glove the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake. From Variety:

Jackie Earle Haley is moving to Elm Street, signing to star as iconic killer Freddy Krueger in New Line and Platinum Dunes' relaunch of "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing with John Ricard co-producing. Samuel Bayer will direct from Wesley Strick's script, with lensing set to begin next month in Chicago.

New Line decided last year to relaunch the movie series centered on the iconic killer, who haunts the dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep. Krueger was played by Robert Englund in the 1984 original, spawning nine films and two TV series in what was New Line's most lucrative franchise until "The Lord of the Rings."

It's so much harder to completely deride these cash-grab sequels when they make a smart, fan-approved decision like this one. A naturally creepy, Academy Award-nominated actor playing the infamous dream-haunting killer sounds unnervingly positive. Where's the talk of arbitrary, unnecessary updates to the iconic Freddy Krueger appearance? This morsel isn't enough to lure me into the positivity van, but I am cautiously approaching it.

Mar 2 2009 Should Rorschach Be New Krueger?

jackie-earle-haley.jpg

The role did nearly nothing for Robert Englund but ensure him horror cult status and a place in the sequels, but apparently the part of Freddy Krueger is now a hot commodity, and the fan favorite to put on the bladed glove is Jackie Earle Haley. The Academy Award-nominated actor spoke to MTV about the chances of him becoming the official Nightmare of Elm Street, and his Watchmen co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan chimed in too:

“You know, I did hear about that just recently,” the Oscar-nominee smiled when we asked him about the Freddy rumors recently. “A lot of people have been asking me.”

And although rumors that he was near signing on the dotted line appear to be false, Haley is more than willing to talk to Bay and his team if they want to contact him.

“You know,” he said with a grin. “I’m curious.”

In many ways, the casting would make sense. Haley is only slightly older than Englund was when he first took over the Freddy role, has a nonexistent hairline that would make the Freddy makeup easier, and resurrected his career (with “Little Children”) playing a deranged-but-somewhat-sympathetic man who preyed on kids.

“I personally would love to see him as Freddy Krueger,” added Haley’s “Watchmen” co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan. “I can’t think of anyone else that could pull it off.”

I agree Haley would be good for the part, but Morgan is really overstating things to imply he might be the only actor capable of pulling it off. In fact, I'd suggest to whoever directs the next Nightmare on Elm Street that they look beyond human actors into the stuff of true nightmares...

Feb 24 2009 The Rorschach Diary Reading Series

rorschach-investigates.jpg

Go into Watchmen with prior knowledge of every scene--and not just because it's a decade-old book that anyone who cares at all about comics has read. Warner Bros. has released two more clips from the film, so now you can see Rorschach investigate things while reading from his journal. It's the best diary reading from a man in a ridiculous costume since Diary of a Mad Black Woman:

Feb 18 2009 Rorschach and Nite Owl are Good Friends FOREVER

watchmen-bffs.jpg

Have some Watchmen clips, everyone! See Nite Owl (not Rorschach like in the comic--ut oh!) visit Veidt and his hair wave. Revel in Rorschach being good friends with Nite Owl despite occasional arguments and accusations of insanity. Try not to worry that everything seems slightly stiff and unnatural--it should at least be better than the Joel Schumacher Batmen.

Empire has posted a new Watchmen behind-the-scenes video about the process behind making Rorschach's constantly-shifting mask. The secret: computers. They're not just for word processing anymore.

Also there are some never-before-seen Rorschach's youth scenes:

Dec 31 2008 'Watchmen' Featurette: Hey, It's Moloch!

watchmen-molock-featurette.jpg

Seeing that it might be a bit longer than originally anticipated before you get to see that Watchmen movie everyone is talking about, curb your desire with this new footage-filled featurette. With Star Trek and this (hopefully) coming out in the coming months, 2009 is shaping up to be a big year for prosthetic pointed ears in films that can't possibly live up to their hype.

Six new posters for Watchmen have been spread to various media outlets, each poster depicting a character from the film standing or squatting near a quote. Above, from the LA Times, is the Comedian lighting his cigar with a flamethrower--the third coolest way to light a cigar after dragon's flame and hellfire. Below the cut: the remaining five!

Nov 7 2008 Rorschach Gets His Own Poster

watchmen-rorschach-poster.jpg

Continuing the trend of standing in the middle of the street for a poster, here's the new Rorschach-featuring Watchmen one-sheet. I can completely relate to the sentiment that "the city is afraid of me." It's not because I've seen it's true face though; it's because I'm constantly shirtless, screaming, and swinging a dog leash.

Aug 26 2008 'Watchmen' Covers Reveal Rorschach is Wearing a Sofa

Superhero Hype has some scans from a Brazilian magazine that ran mugshot-style covers of Watchmen characters. I'm pretty sure Rorschach's costume is made of microsuede and a golf towel, but otherwise things are still looking good.

Here are some new shots of Watchmen from Empire Online. Hurry up and get looking at them now so you can be completely over-saturated by the time Pizza Hut releases their Dr. Manhattan-Style Pizza (with Rorschach-roni and Nite Owlives).* Thanks for divulging the location of these, Juan.

*Please tell me there won't actually be a Watchmen pizza.
