Jan 13 2009 Johnny Depp Delving Back Into Hunter S. Thompson's Mind
A casting announcement from TheBadandUgly has hinted that Johnny Depp's next role may take him to 1950s Puerto Rico for an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary. From ComingSoon:
First announced in May of 2005, could The Rum Diary finally be moving forward with Johnny Depp starring?TheBadandUgly.com has received a casting announcement that suggests the Hunter S. Thompson adaptation will be Depp's next, as it lists a March 2009 start date. Depp will play Paul Kemp, a freelance journalist writing for a rundown newspaper in 1950s Puerto Rico and surrounded by a bunch of lost souls bent on self-destruction. Bruce Robinson wrote the screenplay and will direct.
This will be Depp's first time starring in a Thompson adaptation since 1998's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and the first time I'll be watching a Depp-starring Thompson adaptation somewhere other than a dorm room. I bet it will look and smell so different.
Jun 5 2008 'Gonzo' Trailer Contains Woefully Little Muppet Content
Gonzo is a new film by Taxi to the Dark Side's torture documentarian, Alex Gibney, that explores the life and works of gonzo journalist and every first year creative writing major's favorite author, Hunter S. It's a pleasant reminder of a happier time, when insane drug use could lead to revolutionary writing, instead of, say, panty flashes and highly-publicized rehab stints.

Apr 23 2007 Slevin Dudes to Make Rum Diary Movie

"Dogs f*** the pope, no fault of mine."
"Lucky Number Slevin" writer Jason Smilovic and producers Tyler Mitchell and Robert Kravis have formed Dark & Stormy Entertainment, a production company that will hatch film and TV projects.
One of their first projects will be the film version of Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary with Johnny Depp and writer/director Bruce Robinson.
I'm almost scared to see this made into a movie. I fell asleep five minutes into Lucky Number Slevin (dumbest title ever, btw), and the only thing I've heard of that Bruce Robinson has done is The Killing Fields, which came out when I was three.
Is it too late to get Terry Gilliam?
