Feb 2 2009 Liam Neeson Kicks the Crap Out of Everyone

taken-liam-neeson.jpg

Your box office report, sirs and madams:

1. Taken - $24.6 million. Now you know: never take anything from Liam Neeson.

2. Paul Blart: Mall Cop - $14 million. I'm starting to think Kevin James might have a shot at stealing the Blockbuster Comedy Go-To Fat Guy crown. Jack Black, watch your back.

3. The Uninvited - $10.5 million, barely beating a three-week-old movie about a hotel that is for dogs.

4. Hotel for Dogs - A mere $8.7 million, keeping its total gross a distant second to the other recent movie about an orphaned genius inventor named Bruce.

5. Gran Torino - $8.6 million. The eighth week of an old racist man drama easily beat a new Renee Zellweger romantic comedy (8th). That just blew up the Hollywood system.

Jan 26 2009 Paul Blart is Really, Really Popular Mall Cop

paul-blart-mall-cop-trailer.jpg

Apparently no one realized a new Brendan Fraser movie opened this weekend, and instead everyone saw these movies:

1. Paul Blart: Mall Cop - $21.5 million. Maybe let's not all see Paul Blart next weekend, just to give something else a shot. We'll divide it up: last names beginning with A-M, you get to enjoy the endless laughter this weekend.

2. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - $20.7 million. Nice try, Underworld, but last I checked there isn't a King of Queens vampire, which makes your movie bullshit in comparison to anything with a King of Queens.

3. Gran Torino - $16 million, putting it less than $3 million away from reaching $100 million. How did that happen?

4. Hotel for Dogs - $12.4 million. Oooh, a hotel for dogs, you say? That sounds good.

5. Slumdog Millionaire - $10.6 million. Oooh, something else about a dog, you say? That also sounds good.

Jan 19 2009 Paul Blart: Best Movie

paul-blart-mall-cop-trailer.jpg

Our best movies this previous weekend were:

1. Paul Blart: Mall Cop - $31.8 million. So that's why everyone was giving me friendly waves at my night job...

2. Gran Torino - $22 million, still astounding for a movie marketed entirely on scowling, finger guns, and a few actual guns.

3. My Bloody Valentine 3-D - $21.3 million. Expect commercials proclaiming it "the number 3-D movie in the country!"

4. Notorious - $20.5 million, 20.5 million problems! (Like that one song of the three Notorious B.I.G. hits I know.)

5. Hotel for Dogs - $17 million. What's this one about again? I forget exactly what the premise is.

Jan 6 2009 'Hotel for Dogs' Clip: Oooooh, I Hate That Dog Catcher!

hotel-for-dogs-clip.jpg

Who's getting drunk and seeing Hotel for Dogs opening night with me? Come on, it will be a great time. If confusion about the film's premise is what's holding you back, let me clarify: it's about this hotel. Specifically, a hotel for dogs. If for some reason you need more than that rock solid plot, here's a new clip. It will make you hate dogcatchers for how they drive around in their puppy paddy wagon indiscriminately capturing dogs--even if children are claiming the dogs--just to meet their dog quotas. But don't hate the dogcatchers--hate the dog catching system.

So who's coming?

Nov 25 2008 Another Poster for That Movie Where There's a Hotel for Dogs

hotel-for-dogs-poster-2.jpg

Here's the new poster for what's basically the most anticipated movie on Earth right now, Hotel for Dogs. It's a good a.m. reminder that we have a allowed a movie to be named Hotel for Dogs. "What's the concept for your movie, movie writer?"
"Well, we're thinking something where there's this hotel, and it's for dogs."
"Sounds good. Let's make that movie, and we'll call it Hotel for Dogs, as in the entire concept."

Why not at least Mutt Motel? Canine Inn?

Oct 30 2008 'Hotel for Dogs' Trailer!

hotel-for-dogs-trailer.jpg

Not many family movies will encourage approaching and capturing wild dogs and investigating the sort of dingy, vacant urban buildings that typically house drug dens and the homeless. Hotel for Dogs isn't like many family movies though. It's the first and only film to cater to children who dream of living a life of servitude for animals: installing shoe dispensing machines for dogs, inventing ball-throwing devices for dogs, giving dogs superfluous spa treatments, and otherwise seeing to every whim a dog may or may not have.

What I find strange is that Don Cheadle is in a supporting role but doesn't seem to show up anywhere in the trailer. Come on, kids love Hotel Rwanda. They're going to want to know he's in this.

Oct 23 2008 'Hotel for Dogs' Poster: Kids are the Bread of a Giant Dog Sandwich

Augh! Why am I stuck in a nightmare of overly-expressive dogs!? Oh, I see. It's because that boy is clearly Satan, punishing me for things I've said about Beverly Hills Chihuahua. That's fair.

Oct 9 2007 Some Other Crap That Happened...

john-carter-of-mars.jpg- A biopic on Sugar Ray Leonard, a man who has been world champion in five different weight classes, will be made by Kevin Pollack, a man who has five celebrity impressions, three of which are William Shatner. How appropriate. [Variety]

- Lisa Kudrow joins Emma Roberts and Don Cheadle in the wacky dogs-in-a-hotel movie Hotel for Dogs. (Again, why is Cuba Gooding, Jr. not in this?) Ten-to-one odds say her character will be vacuous but strangely endearing. [Hollywood Reporter]

- Pixar plans to release a trilogy of John Carter of Mars films, the first of which should reach audiences before 2012. I've never read the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, but image searching leads me to believe it's a plainly-named Conan the Barbarian killing some space freaks, something I never realized I wanted to see until now. [Empire]

- Will a Writer's Guild strike happen as soon as November 1? Possibly! What will this mean in regards to the Tarantino-esque-with-a-hint-of-early-Kevin-Smith script you've been working on since college? Don't worry, it's still really awesome. [Variety]
