Oct 14 2009 Why Not?: Gus Van Sant, Bret Easton Ellis Teaming Up

Joining Spider-Man and Werewolf in the ranks of team-ups I didn't see coming but could see working out pretty well, Gus Van Sant and Bret Easton Ellis have decided to collaborate on adapting the Vanity Fair article "The Golden Suicides" into a new film script. Variety, please explain the story:

Duncan and Blake formed a popular couple on the downtown New York and Venice, Calif., art scenes. She was one of the first videogame designers for girls, and his "digital paintings" -- kaleidoscopic images shown on plasma screens -- established him as a rising star on the circuit.

The couple descended into a paranoid spiral when the artists developed a consuming belief that government and religious organizations were conspiring against them. She killed herself in 2007. Blake found her body on the floor of their bedroom, and walked into the Atlantic Ocean a week later, ending his life.

Sounds like a match made in three-named heaven!

Sep 4 2008 I Believe in Harvey 'Milk' Trailer. Get It? It's Like Harvey Dent

Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man elected to a public office in the U.S. (though some of the Founding Fathers seemed a bit iffy at times). He was then murdered by a fellow city supervisor who hated Harvey Milk being the first openly gay man elected to a public office in the U.S., because that's the American way. Gus Van Sant has made the story into a biopic starring Josh Brolin, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna, and Sean Penn as Milk, a role that will surely get him Oscar nominations and other prizes made of gold. Here's the trailer:

Jan 30 2008 Sean Penn as Harvey Milk/Samuel Powers

I knew Sean Penn was going to take on the role of politician and gay rights activist Harvey Milk for Gus Van Sant's Milk, but I had no idea he was going to be playing it as Dustin Diamond. I guess the gay angle would do a lot to explain Screech's willingness to join Zack's various harebrained schemes so eagerly; I just worry it could get distracting if he keeps hiding in his locker when a rival politician shows up.

Jan 11 2008 Gus Van Sant's 'Paranoid Park' Poster and Trailer

paranoid-park-poster.jpg

After finding mainstream audiences with Good Will Hunting, Finding Forrester, and a perplexing shot-for-shot remake of Psycho, it seems Gus Van Sant has definitively returned to his roots. Following in the footsteps of his naturalistic 2003 effort, Elephant, Paranoid Park tells the dark, personal story of a teenage skater coping with a death he was involved with, and stars largely non-actors.

Though it's been playing festivals for some time, you can finally see the trailer here and the poster above. Believe it or not, it does not star the youngest Hanson kid.
