Oct 20 2009 'Everyone's Fine' Poster: This Christmas, Four People Will Find Adequacy

everybodys-fine-poster.jpg

Because you've always wanted a Confessions of a Dangerous Mind Christmas Special mixed with Meet the Parents and a digital camera commercial, here's the poster for Everybody's Fine. Also, I'd just like to note that everybody is clearly not fine. Robert De Niro's face, his hypothetical left arm, and all of their careers are far from fine.

Sep 28 2009 'A Christmas Carol' Trailer 2: If Nothing Else, They Owe Ferrell Chest Royalties

christmas-carol-trailer-2.jpg

This new trailer for Robert Zemeckis's stylelessly-animated A Christmas Carol has a cameo by someone who appears to be a CGI, Christmas-themed version of Terrence Maddox, Will Ferrell's nude male model of SNL fame. Logically, this makes it marginally better than the Christmas Carol trailer that came out two weeks ago.*

*It's possible that trailer included this guy too. I can't pay attention to everything all the time, OK?

Sep 15 2009 'A Christmas Carol' Poster: This Christmas, See This Happen

christmas-carol-poster-2.jpg

When your kids beg you to see "the movie with the gaunt, hideous old man straddling a novelty-sized candle snuffer that is flying"--because that's what kids like seeing, and they know how to recognize a giant candle snuffer when they see one--now you'll know what they're talking about.

Bigger version at Cinematical. You can really see the detail the animators put into filling Scrooge's mouth with fillings. This is the start of a revolution in CG dental restorative material.

Sep 14 2009 'Disney's A Christmas Carol' Trailer: Back to the Uncanny Valley

disney-christmas-carol-trai.jpg

Proving that nearly-realistic, Christmas-themed computer animation can be made slightly creepier than Polar Express when the subject is a deformed old man, here's the new trailer for Robert Zemeckis's adaptation of the well-worn tale of Ebenezer Scrooge.

If you loved the floating feather dancing in the air in Forrest Gump, you'll love the floating snowflake dancing in the air in this trailer. What is Bobby Z's obsession with following delicate, white objects drifting gently to the ground?

Jul 7 2009 'Christmas Carol' Poster: Behold Scrooge's Flame Top Hat!

christmas-carol-german-post.jpg

Phew! I was getting worried yet another A Christmas Carol adaptation would omit the fourth, lesser mentioned ghost, the Ghost of Christmas a Miniature Altar Boy Who Uses Fire to Simulate How You'd Look in Various Fancy Hats. Probably the least plot-essential ghost, but a good one I think we've all missed. Welcome back, friend.

May 19 2009 'A Christmas Carol' Still Pointless and Slightly Repulsive

christmas-carol-awful.jpg

Disney has released a new image and short clip from Robert Zemeckis's A Christmas Carol, confirming that, yes, the computer-animated rehashing of the Dickens classic still appears to be superfluous and moderately unsettling to look at, and Jim Carrey's wacky, fluctuating voice is not helping:

Jan 8 2009 Jim Carrey, as Animated Scrooge, Wearing a Translucent Baggy as a Sleeping Cap

christmas-carol-scrooge.jpg

Filmz.ru has posted the first look at Jim Carrey as Scrooge in Robert Zemeckis's A Christmas Carol. Like Zemeckis's last project, this film is entirely motion-capture animation, taking the creepy, empty faces of Beowulf and combining them with the creepy, awful faces of the elderly. I'm probably going to throw up during the trailer.

Dec 17 2008 This 'Black Dynamite' Christmas Greeting is Not Safe for Workplaces

From Twitch, here's a holiday greeting brought to you by the film, Black Dynamite. As the titles hints at, Black Dynamite loves "ho" puns, as you will see:

Nov 7 2008 Santa's Life Story: The CGI Movie

santa-cgi.jpg

Hyde Park Entertainment, Toonz Entertainment, and Gang of 7 Animation are teaming up to produce a CGI-animated feature film version of L. Frank Baum's The Life and Aventures of Santa Claus. From Variety:

Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment has joined forces with Singapore-based Toonz Entertainment and Gang of 7 Animation to mount "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus," a CGI-animated feature based on the book by L. Frank Baum.

The film is expected to be ready for holiday 2010 theatrical release.

Story follows Santa's formative years, including a battle against the heart of evil that establishes the Santa mythology.

We already have one of those, right? A CGI Santa movie? We have to have that already. Don't we? How would it take us this long to get to that? Three Shreks with plans for more and we're just now making a computer-generated Santa? I have to be forgetting that we've done this, because that makes no sense.

Well, regardless, a CGI origin story should be perfect for taking away any of the remaining mystery that makes Santa magical. And if it keeps with the tradition of most CGI movies lately, it should also make him uncomfortable to look at, inappropriately sexualized, and closely associated with a terrible song! Everyone* wins!

Sep 10 2008 'People Celebrating Christmas' Has a Trailer

nothing-like-holidays-trail.jpg

It turns out some Hispanic families, like the African-American family last year, celebrate Christmas too! Here's the trailer to Nothing Like the Holidays, starring Alfred Molina, Debra Messing, Luis Guzman, the cast of Grindhouse, and, for some reason, not Edward James Almost:

In Nothing Like the Holidays, two of today’s most talented actors, John Leguizamo (The Happening, The Take) and Freddy Rodriguez (“Six Feet Under,” Bobby), join Debra Messing (“Will & Grace,” “The Starter Wife”), Alfred Molina (The Da Vinci Code, Spider-Man 2), and director Alfredo de Villa (the award-winning Washington Heights) to tell the humorous and heartwarming story of one unforgettable family holiday.

There's no way John Leguizamo and Freddy Rodriguez should be considered more talented than Alfred Molina, but anyway, here it is:

Dec 21 2007 Christmas Watching Recommendations For a More Christmasey Christmas

charlie-brown-christmas.jpg

In the spirit of things, I've posted a completely un-definitive list of Christmasey movies and specials to watch this weekend. It was admittedly thrown together in the last hour (thanks to those who helped), so leave anything I missed in the comments. The omission of Home Alone, It's a Wonderful Life, and Chevy Chase Christmas was not a mistake.

I will be back Wednesday.

Oct 26 2007 AM Poster Post: 'Christmas in Wonderland' Could Go Wrong

christmas-in-wonderland-pos.jpg

Two kids, a mall, a million in cash... It sounds like these kids have a big day of shopping ahead of them! Hopefully, using this million in cash, they'll be able to buy some great gifts for their family--and don't forget to split up so you can buy some stuff for each other too, kids!

But wait a minute. What's this here? "What could go wrong?"

Come to think of it, I suppose it is a bit anomalous that two kids would be alone in a mall with a million dollars in cash. What if they lose it, or get kidnapped? Are these guys behind them, who are also riding motorcycles in the mall, somehow involved in this affair? What could go wrong??? Everything!!!

I'd better just go see it to find out what, if anything, goes wrong.

Poster: successful.

Oct 25 2007 'P2' Trailer Maintains Creepiness of Parking Structures

p2-trailer.jpg

What's scarier than being stuck in a parking complex, alone with an insane parking lot security guard obsessed with you? Why, being stuck in a parking complex, alone with an insane parking lot security guard obsessed with you on Christmas Eve, obviously. Or at least that's a good way to market such a movie during the holiday season.

P2, not based on the second controller of a video game, tells such a story.

Watch the trailer below the cut, and feel bad that Wes Bentley has been relegated to creepiness since American Beauty, even though he's basically Toby Maguire with different eyebrows.
