Mar 23 2009 David Cross Back on TV... in the UK

david-cross.jpg

Broadcast Now reports David Cross, who's already made himself a TV favorite with Mr. Show and Arrested Development, will star in a new comedy pilot he's written with Shaun Pye. Fellow Americans, time to warm up our downloading machines, because this one's going Channel 4:

The US actor will star in The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, a culture-clash comedy he has written with Shaun Pye for RDF Television. It centres on a US executive who finds himself out of his depth when he is mistakenly sent to run his company's UK arm. Cross' Arrested Development co-star Will Arnett is also in talks to appear.
(via Flick News.)

UK, is it not enough you've already made most of the recent great television comedy? Now you're stealing some of our best people to work for you too? This must be how every non-US-based sports fan feels.

Nov 21 2008 'Earth' Trailer: Nature is Crazy

earth-trailer-2.jpg

I just recently saw the BBC's Planet Earth on a friend's 50-some inch 1080 HD hologram TV. If you haven't seen this, let me tell you, I can confidently say nature is more amazing and crazy than even YouTube suggests. Find a friend who can afford a nice television made of plasma and watch it.

I bring this up because Disney and Planet Earth director Alastair Fothergill have taken what looks like mostly the same footage and edited it into a theatrical release. Normally that would be obnoxious, but if this is released IMAX, that means seeing nature craziness at a massive scale. It will feel like I've actually gone outdoors!

Here's the trailer:

May 1 2008 'My Girl' Starring in New, Non-'My Girl' Movie

in-loop-gandolfini-chlumsky.jpg

Around 1991, I couldn't have been the only one with a massive crush on My Girl star Anna Chlumsky. Someone is with me on this, right? Looking back at pictures of the then ten-year-old, I'm not entirely sure what I saw in that gap-toothed grin (aside from someone closer to my age than Debbie Gibson and Vanna White, and someone willing to kiss Macauley Culkin's all-too-familiar nebbish, bee-phobic character), but we were definitely in love. And it was real.

Anyway, after a nearly ten-year hiatus, it seems she's back, looking again crush-worthy and getting bit parts on various NBC series. And now she's starring in BBC Films' In the Loop with James Gandolfini and Steve Coogan. It's not quite My Girl 3: Remembering the Bee Attack, but it's something:

Gandolfini will play a U.S. general in the unofficial adaptation of the BBC series "The Thick of It," which parodies the inner workings of U.S. and British government agencies and their international relations in a tale of war-hungry politicians. Chlumsky plays a State Department assistant and Rache ("United 93") is an undersecretary of state, and Coogan ("Hamlet 2") plays a disgruntled U.S. citizen.

Look below the cut for the original My Girl trailer, and let Chlumsky remind you why you fell in love with her as she seductively sashays across her porch. Warning: it will make you feel sort of dirty if you're no longer nine.

Feb 13 2008 'The Mighty Boosh' Movie is Coming (But Probably Nowhere Near Me)

mighty-boosh-movie.jpg

The surreal British comedy series The Mighty Boosh has a movie is in the works? Yes! (exclamation point here to denote actual excitement.)

Stars Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt have signed a deal with BBC Films to bring the cult series to the big screen.

The show focuses on friends Vince Noir (Fielding) and Howard Moon (Barratt), who embark on a series of magical adventures.

The pair are currently working on a script for the movie, which is likely to begin filming early next year.

If you haven't watched this show, you probably should. And no using the fact that it's only aired in Britain and unavailable in the U.S. as an excuse. Haven't you heard of illegal downloading? Get with it, Luddites. You can start here.
