Nov 19 2009 Anne Hathaway Could Be in the Spider-Man

anne-hathaway.jpg

How do you like the idea of Anne Hathaway as Black Cat, Spider-Maniacs (fans of Spider-Man who are psychotic)? I ask not arbitrarily but because she might actually have been offered the role.

According to Nikki Finke, producers for the superhero series have approached the Bride Wars warrior with an offer for an unspecified part. Using the knowledge that Kirsten Dunst is still in and Black Cat supposedly has a part in the next Spider-Man film, me and the rest of the internet is guessing that offer was for Black Cat.

Of course, there's also the rumor going around that Rachel McAdams was rumored last week, so we're probably at least a Michelle Williams rumor away from an official announcement. In the meantime, let's continue complaining that Sam Raimi for some reason isn't keeping true to the character and casting a young actress with actual white hair and disproportionately enormous breasts.

Sep 22 2009 'Valentine's Day' Trailer: Another VoltRom-Com Fuses Several Romantic Comedies Into One Powerful Monster

valentines-day-trailer.jpg

Can you believe that, come Valentine's Day, it will have been almost exactly one year since we last saw roughly a dozen celebrities of various caliber crammed into a single romantic comedy in which every other piece of dialogue has to reiterate the title? (See He's Just Not That Into You, web-slingers.) Thankfully, that will be the exact day that a new VoltRom-Com takes the throne, appropriately titled Valentines Day. This one manages to cram in two Roberts (Julia, Emma), two Grey's Anatomi, Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, George Lopez, Shirley MacLaine, Queen Latifah, and the two celebrities most noted for being "so fucking hot" before the arrival of Megan Fox (Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel).

The trailer feels like watching an Oscars montage reel for The Year in Romantic Comedy. Or, maybe more accurately, like simultaneously hearing the scream of every single ugly friend that ever had to listen to their extremely attractive friend complain about relationships that ever existed:

Aug 4 2009 Wolverine Playing P.T. Barnum

jackman-hathaway-emmy.jpg

Good news to anyone who's been desperately hoping to once again see the cocktail of Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, song and dance that made the Oscars so song and dancey. Wolverine has signed on to star as P.T. Barnum in some kind of musical biopic, while the subject of his infatuation is being written with hopes for Devil Wears Prada to take the part. From Variety:

Twentieth Century Fox has attached Hugh Jackman to play American showman P.T. Barnum in "The Greatest Showman on Earth," an original contemporary musical to be scripted by Jenny Bicks ("Sex and the City").

Jackman will play the showman with a penchant for hoaxing a gullible public as he creates the three-ring circus that made him famous. The musical also focuses on his infatuation with singer Jenny Lind -- the so-called Swedish Nightingale.

The Lind role is being scripted for Anne Hathaway, who teamed with Jackman in his opening Oscars number.

Perfect casting:

It probably came down to Jackman and George Wendt. You could really only flip a coin to decide who's better suited for the part.

Jul 22 2009 Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland' Trailer: Yup, That's a Tim Burton

Really, no further description is necessary or possible. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland could only exist as one thing, and this is it:

Jul 14 2009 'Alice in Wonderland' People Holding Animals

Start modeling your group Halloween costume early: Empire has some new photos of the characters of Alice in Wonderland holding some living things. If Helena Bonham Carter cradling a pig doesn't get you excited about Tim Burton's seemingly-predestined adaptation, I don't know what to tell you.

Elijah Wood in Eccentric Zombie Carrot Top costume says "Hello." USA Today and Yahoo have posted some new shots from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and I think you'll be surprised how much they look like the results of a "celebrities as Alice in Wonderland characters" Photoshop contest:

Mar 24 2009 Anne Hathaway to Birth Liza Minelli

anne-hathaway.jpg

Welp, Anne Hathaway has guaranteed herself one more Academy Award nomination. Delving even farther into "take me seriously" territory, the actress has signed on to star in stage and screen adaptations of Get Happy, a biography on the life of Judy Garland:

Anne Hathaway will play Judy Garland in the Weinstein Co.'s legit [stage] and film adaptations of the Gerald Clarke-penned biography "Get Happy."

VP of production and development Ben Famiglietti, whose purview includes both film and legit productions, said it is unclear which version would come first. The stage version would naturally be cheaper and quicker to produce, but some filmmakers could even guide both, starting with a film.

While Garland's life and legacy have been explored before in popular culture, Weinstein noted Clarke's take "is particularly outstanding because of its exclusive details from her own writings."

Famiglietti said Hathaway's commitment has already prompted strong interest from filmmakers, screenwriters and librettists.

Considering that the majority of my Judy Garland knowledge comes from The Wizard of Oz and three seconds in a Looney Tunes cartoon I didn't understand as a child, I'm probably not the best person to evaluate this casting. I guess Anne Hathaway seems pretty Garlandish, right?

Jan 9 2009 Is Anne Hathaway Our Best Actress?

anne-hathaway-golden-globe.jpg

New York Magazine's Vulture has pointed out (with the above screen-capture evidence) that for a time yesterday, the official Golden Globes site marked Anne Hathaway the winner of the Best Actress in a Drama award. Premature reveal or someone bumping the "add suggestive star" button? Either way, awards are really great.

Oct 7 2008 Anne Hathaway and Tim Burton's Girlfriend Join 'Alice'

alice-hathaway-bonham-carte.jpg

Well, it was only a matter of time: Helena Bonham Carter has been cast as the Red Queen in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Just like she was cast in Planet of the Apes, Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, and Sweeney Todd--every Tim Burton film for the last eight years. Anne Hathaway is in it now too. From THR:

Anne Hathaway, who is generating buzz for her performance in "Rachel Getting Married," has signed for a role in "Alice in Wonderland," which Tim Burton is directing for Disney.

Helena Bonham Carter also has joined the film.

The movie, which stars Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, will use a combination of live action and performance-capture technology to tell the Lewis Carroll story.

Hathaway is playing the White Queen, a benevolent monarch who is deposed and banished by her sister, the Red Queen (Carter), who has an affinity for crying out, "Off with their heads!" The White Queen needs Alice to slay a creature known as the Bandersnatch.

The news comes as a shock only to Helena Bonham Carter, who has just learned she's probably being dumped for Anne Hathaway.

Sep 24 2008 'Bride Wars' Trailer: Like 'Star Wars' but with Brides, and Painful

bride-wars-trailer.jpg

Well, would you look what Candice Bergen dragged in: the new trailer for Bride Wars, the only film daring enough to ask, "What would happen if two best friends accidentally scheduled their weddings for the same day?" and answer it with, "I don't know, stain each other different colors?" So painful. It's like Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson are two sticks Murphy Brown is clacking in your face.

Jun 5 2008 Anne Hathaway Dons Jersey Tan for 'Bride Wars'

bride-wars-hathaway-tan.jpg

In the We Network game show-titled new comedy Bride Wars, Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson discover they've scheduled their weddings for the exact same day. I know, right? So the two do what any logical people who have the brain of a sitcom would do: engage in some kind of elaborate prank war. Here's a photo of Hathaway from the New York shoot, presumably after a gag involving tanner and replacing dress straps with rope. I wonder if this somehow relates to the character listed on the IMDB as "Tanorexic"...

Jun 4 2008 'Get Smart' Trailer Has All The Classic Gags You Remember

It's nice to see some of the classic Get Smart gags have still made it into this updated version. Like the old To An Onlooker, It Looks Like He's Having Sex With A Man Even Though He Isn't gag, and the the old This Man Almost Died In A Gruesome Car Accident That Would Have Decapitated Him gag, and the old This Can't Really Be This Bad, Can It? gag. All the good ones.

Mar 20 2008 Yet Another 'Get Smart' Poster

another-get-smart-poster.jpg

As the trend of the previous Get Smart posters forebode, the most recent incarnation appears to now be completely devoid of any comedy at all. Sure, the line "...and loving it" is a direct cribbing of one of Don Adams' famed catchphrases from the original 60's show, but when no one younger than an 80's Nickelodeon kid would get the reference, let alone find it funny, there may be a problem. And how can Steve Carell appear so unenthused as he holds the legendary shoe phone?! I begged my parents to order me one during every Nick-At-Nite commercial for it for years. What an ungrateful asshole.

Feb 28 2008 'Get Smart' Trailer Earns an Anger Downgrade

get-smart-trailer-carrell-h.jpg

The latest offering in the Nick-At-Nite-programming-turned-broad-comedy genre, Get Smart, has a new trailer. Like in the previous trailers, it still looks bland and uninspired, relying on its impressive cast to pull off weak slapstick gags, but enough works that I'm willing to downgrade my anger level from fuming to annoyed ambivalence. My respect for the original series makes me want them to prove me wrong and make a decent film, but I'm also terribly fearful that might lead to a Green Acres movie (starring Will Ferrell and Paris Hilton?).

Jan 24 2008 'Get Smart' Trailer Missed It By That Much

get-smart-trailer-intl.jpg

Thanks to Kyle for sending over the disappointing Portuguese trailer to Get Smart. Despite a respectable cast, I'm near abandoning hope for this. At times it looks referential to a fault, with Carell basically doing a half-assed impression of the late Don Adams. Other times, it feels like they let Carell playing himself to the point that the original character is completely abandoned. Either approach might work individually (and sometimes it does), but together it's a jumbled mess, never committing to a style in the fear of alienating either modern Carell fans or fans of the original series. In other words, it's something like you'd expect from the director of classics like Nutty Professor 2 and Anger Management.

They'd have done better to show off more of the supporting cast. The Rock, though distractingly foreheady, is a far more charismatic actor than the cute-but-lifeless Anne Hathaway, as is Carell's fellow Office star David Koechner. And did you realize they somehow got Bill Murray to play an agent? Neither did I, until I looked it up, yet that alone would have been a far more enticing feature to show off than the wink-wink catchphrases they've pieced together into a trailer.

Dec 12 2007 Maxwell Smart Still Communicating Via Shoe

get-smart-shoe-phone.jpg

As Cinemablend has astutely noted, anyone even vaguely familiar with the Get Smart series remembers Maxwell Smart's iconic shoe phone. In a time prior to cellular technology, long before Verizon contemplated the idea of mass stalking as a phone-hocking gimmick, a shoe phone was the perfect blend of James Bond gadgetry meets absurdity. Aside from the door-opening intro credits, it's practically all I remember from the show.

There was a time when Nick at Nite was offering a real version of the shoe phone for use in homes, and though I wasn't sure if it was a joke or not (I'm still not sure), I begged for my parents to buy me it. Surely, a replica plot from a 30-year-old television series was the one element missing from my attempts at adolescent popularity. (I would later learn lack of athleticism and infrequent showering was also hurting my chances.) I still hold some resentment about the whole thing.

So it's nice to see that, despite advances in communications, the new Steve Carell/Anne Hathaway Get Smart is still willing to trade-in technological accuracy for nostalgic laughs by including the infamous device. We can only hope that, in spite of the invention of whispering, the Cone of Silence will make an appearance too.

Nov 15 2007 AM Poster Post: 'Get Smart' Has Carell Hair-Lipped

get-smart-poster.jpg

Hey, if I were Steve Carell, I wouldn't mind Anne Hathaway's photoshopped hair in my face, either! Pubic hair, that is! Booyah! Particularly if, like in this poster, it's only the head of Anne Hathaway pasted on an unreasonably smaller body.

Jul 10 2007 Get Smart Teaser Trailer

The teaser trailer for the remake of '60s classic Get Smart has been released, leaving me at a loss as to how to best express my outrage at what they've done with it. It appears Steve Carell has sorrowfully reached the Jim Carrey level of stardom where he's given scripts that include pages of "Steve acts funny, etc."

I guess I should wait until the full trailer to completely shit on this, but I'm at least going to wipe with it for a while.

EDIT: I put up the YouTube version for easier viewing.
