Sep 2 2009 'Iron Man 2' in THREE DIMENSIONS???

iron-man-plastic.jpg

For his second Iron Man film, Jon Favreau could be taking things to the next level! That level being the level of visual depth. According to AICN, 3-D decision-makers at Paramount and Marvel/Disney are reviewing a minute of Iron Man 2 3-D test footage to determine if Scarlett Johansson's breasts erupting from the screen warrants converting the entire film to the gimmicky format.

Something else you executives should weigh into you decision: if you make Iron Man 2 in 3-D, that totally blows your shot at using the Iron Man 3-D 3rd film/3rd dimension naming structure. Someone needs to uphold the grand traditions of Spy Kids 3-D and Jaws 3-D.

Aug 31 2009 Nicolas Cage Starring in New, Ridiculous-as-Expected Film

nicolas-cage.jpg

Still maintaining he has the look and hair of an action star, Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in Drive Angry, a 3-D action film where he'll play a guy trying to fucking kill some dudes who kidnapped his infant granddaughter:

[T]he story centers on a man (Cage) driven by rage who is chasing the people who killed his daughter and kidnapped her baby. The vendetta/rescue spins out of control as the chase gets bloodier by the mile, leaving bodies strewn along the highway.

So it's just Nicolas Cage driving along the open highway murdering some assholes? This is either going to be one of Cage's most ridiculous movies yet or a shockingly accurate adaptation of Road Rash.

Jul 28 2009 'Toy Story 1 & 2 (in 3D Now!)' Teaser

toy-story-1-2-3d-teaser.jpg

With Toy Story and Toy Story 2 returning to screens in Gimmick-Vision Disney Digital 3D for a limited, two week engagement, Pixar has released a brief trailer to remind you that, come October, you can finally see the beloved films as they were never meant to be seen: with depth! As you can see in the above still, it gets pretty weird when Buzz finally reveals his feelings for Woody and completely exposes his lower half:

Apr 1 2009 Toy Story 1 & 2 & (Trailer for) 3 Coming to Theaters in Three Dimensions

toy-story-3-d.jpg

Fans of Pixar's Toy Story franchise and action along the Z-axis, everything will be coming together for you this fall. Disney has announced that, for a limited time beginning October 2nd, both Toy Story movies will be re-released as a newly-rendered 3-D double-feature. And if that's not enough, the films will be preceded by the first trailer for Toy Story 3. By my calculations, that's about 2.2 Toy Stories for the price of one! What a deal, people. Unless it ends up these jerks may you pay more since it's a double-feature, in which case I'll get back to you with some updated figures and we can decide from there if it's still a worth leaving the house for.

Feb 2 2009 'Monsters vs. Aliens' 333-DDD Super Bowl Spot

monsters-aliens-super-bowl.jpg

Don't throw out your 3-D glasses yet! I know you never got the 3-D glasses in the first place, but bear with me, because here's the super 3-D edition trailer for Monsters vs. Aliens (assuming 3-D survives YouTube conversion). It's so 3-Demazing that Bruce Springsteen reportedly said, "I have to follow THAT??? "Born to Run" is going to put these people to sleep after they've see this MF'er!"

Mock enthusiasm aside, I thought all the animation studios were pushing hard to legitimize 3-D as more than a gaudy bell and/or whistle. If that's the case, maybe they should starting cutting all the look-at-this-coming-at-the-screen!-for-no-reason crap. A paddleball zooming at me? Come on. And furthermore, a paddleball at all? Does this generation of kids even know what a paddleball is? Why not a guy using a stick to roll a hoop out of the screen?

Jan 13 2009 James Cameron Stands Around 'Avatar' Set

avatar-james-cameron.jpg

Hey, look at this latest shot from Avatar! It's not an actual shot from the movie, but until director James Cameron decides to start putting out legitimate looks at his big December 3-D sci-fi release, this is the best we've got.

Judging by this image, looks like the film will include the light from Dr. Strangelove's war room and some kind of Dr. Scholl's gel coffin. And James Cameron dresses like he's a BMX biker, maybe? He really needs to just release some images of the aliens.

Oct 7 2008 'TR2N' Will Discriminate Against the Monocular

tron.jpg

Sometimes, in between posts, I'll pause just to type the title of the upcoming TRON sequel, TR2N--admiring its simple, unpronounceable elegance--and I'll start to wonder a couple things. Is it "Tur-two-en," "Tron Two," or just "Tron" but you trace a two in the air as you're saying it? Also, could they not squeeze another number or two intermingled about the letters?

I still haven't heard a definitive pronunciation, but at least I not know the answer to the latter question: yes. Yes, they can fit more numbers among the letters. Try TR2N 3D!

From AICN:

The [TR2N] Comic Con teaser was shot in stereoscopic 3D, and the film will be, too. [Director] Kosinski is particularly excited about the look of the game grid in this format.

OK, so maybe no one actually said it would be called TR2N 3D, but it should be. The trailers could say, "This Christmas... get Tronned! Because the 2 is an O and the 3 is an E!"

The director also noted that Watchmen's Michael Wilkinson has joined the crew as costume designer, presumably because he already has some TRON costumes lying around.

Mar 11 2008 First 'Monsters vs. Aliens' Shot in ULTIMATE 3-D

monsters-vs-aliens-first.jpg

DreamWorks has passed along some new information about upcoming kiddie-style B-movie, Monster Aliens, including the above shot of a giant gaunt woman and some monsters, a cast list, and the bitter threat of even higher ticket prices.

Reese Witherspoon as Susan Murphy, a modern-day California girl who has the bad luck to be hit by a meteor on her wedding day and grows to be 49 feet, 11½ inches tall (a wink at 1958's The Attack of the 50-Foot Woman). Captured by the military, she's renamed Ginormica.

Joining her giantess to fend off Rainn Wilson's evil alien Gallaxhar are Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (Hugh Laurie), the jellylike B.O.B. (Seth Rogen) and the half-ape, half-fish Missing Link (Will Arnett). Kiefer Sutherland speaks for Gen. W.R. Monger (get it?), and Stephen Colbert is the president.

Good to hear Rogen could find time from being in every other comedy to join this, and that they were able to nail several quirky television actors popular with hip, young demographics--hearing the voices of House and Dwight Schrute should distract me from the mediocre attempt at one-upping Pixar--but what's the deal with the higher ticket prices?

Feb 27 2008 'Step Up 3-D' Denotes Third Stepping Event, Third Dimension

step-up-3-d-what.jpg

A couple days ago, writing up the weekend box office report, I made a pretty weak joke that the success of Step Up 2 the Streets would spawn a third film in the series: Step Up 2 the Streets 2: The Str33ts. Reality has trumped me again:

Disney will proceed with a third installment of its hit dance franchise "Step Up," tentatively titled "Step Up 3-D."

Pic will become the latest 3-D live-action film from the Mouse House, with "Step Up 2 the Streets" director Jon Chu in talks to reprise.

Even if it's tentative, I'm pretty resentful they managed to come up with a stupider title than me. Mine is more absurd, but Step Up 3-D definitely wins in sheer, laughable triteness. I thought Step Up 2 the Street was stupid, but calling the third film in the saga "3-D" takes the cake. It's equivalent of adding an "-er" suffix to a title's adverb (Step Upper?), and just slightly less ridiculous than when someone says "[Whatever] 2: Electric Boogaloo". So I really hope they keep the title.

Feb 21 2008 3D 'Coraline' Trailer, Only Not in 3D, and Now Not From Phone Camera

coraline-teaser.jpg

Remember when you saw a short teaser to the Henry Selick/Neil Gaiman 3D stop-motion collaboration, Coraline, and how you wished it were a little less recorded-on-a-cell-phoney? Me too. So here it is.

It's still suffering from the whole "look, this is 3D, so here's something comin' atcha!" affliction, but earns points for looking otherwise great, and for not allowing Brendan Fraser to shove a book at you.

Jan 10 2008 'Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D' as Series of 2D Images

journey-center-earth-3d.jpg

Remember a couple days ago, when the poster to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D showed us its theme park-like world of giant, awesome dinosaurs? Well, New Line has released some production stills from the upcoming film, and they've left me wondering where all the giant, awesome dinosaurs went? Dull scenes of Brendan Fraser's holding flashlights and reading the actual book the movie is based on are not suddenly exciting just because of the presence of 3D glasses and thinning hair. Though it will be interesting to see how post-modernism translates into the third dimension.

Nov 26 2007 'Avatar' Alien is Sexy, Day-Glow

avatar-creature.jpg

Supposedly, this is a piece of concept art from James Cameron's Avatar portraying lady-alien Ney'tiri, and it would make sense considering the previous shot we've seen. I'm describing it as Tron meets Cats meets atomic varicose veins. Thoughts?

Jun 27 2007 Avatar Alien Revealed?

avatar-alien.jpg

A spy for JoBlo has send in an image that he claims is the first look at one of the aliens from James Cameron's huge 3-D sci-fi epic, Avatar. Apparently taken in a nebula by the world's shittiest cell phone, the creature looks to be some sort of strange mix between Predator and Tron. On the other hand, the picture might just be of this guy.
