Resident Evil: Retribution--the fifth Resident Evil film to have risen in the wake of Milla Jovovich's sliding through various corridors--seems to be the franchise's half-assed invitation for those of us who stopped caring to return to the series. In this trailer, Jovovich begins her journey much like we the audience: living a normal, human existence, blissfully unaware of whatever bullshit happened in all those other Resident Evil subtitles. But it's not long before both she and us are given a quick catch-up on what this franchise is on about: oh, right, Milla Jovovich is a character named Alice, and she endlessly shoots handguns in glowing white hallways, and if this is a 3D entry to the series, shit flies at the screen. Basically, everything is just as you remember it, with even Michelle Rodriguez returning for the first time since the original film, because why not? Anyway, here's the trailer. Get ready something that looks very much like a Resident Evil sequel, but just because it's not bluish enough to be an Underworld sequel.
Concerned the title Resident Evil: Retribution had a bit too much dignity for such a thinly-stretched excuse to make Milla Jovovich slide/jump around shooting pistols, Screen Gems has decided to tweak the name to better identify the film as the lazy, unabashed facsimile it really is. So, sow they've slapped a "5" in there, making the film Re5ident Evil: Retribution and drawing obvious comparisons to fellow film classic The Empire 5trikes Back.
Anyway, I guess it does make sense from a business perspective. Now it's a stronger reminder that there are another four of these things you should probably purchase on Blu-ray and digital download. And it's always smart to wait until the seventh or eighth film before you start outright naming them "The shit with the model shooting things again."
WARNING: while watching this gore-filled red-band trailer, don't get caught up in the zombie ravaging and start thinking it's going to be something good beyond that. The name "Resident Evil" attached to it guarantees this will be mostly, if not entirely, stupid.
