Through a tragic oversight, somehow this didn't already happen a decade or so ago, so Lionsgate-Summit has gotten straight to work at the necessary task of putting Reese Witherspoon in an adaptation of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from the Venus, the relationship self-help book that humorously posited men and women are from separate planets. At last, we're going to have a movie or sitcom that will demonstrate how men and women are psychologically different! Tired of modern entertainment painting the sexes as uniformly minded rather than obvious stereotypes played by Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl, Summit Entertainment has purchased the film and TV rights to Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, the 1992 book that found a fun new way to say, "Men and women, y'know?"
Says the press release:
Erik Feig, Summit's President of Production, stated, "'Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus' is not just the title of a book, or what we know will become an amazing film and TV franchise – it is a pop cultural mainstay and comically, sadly, romantically, all too often still true these many years after first being published. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work on a franchise whose name everyone knows and whose reality everyone lives!"
Feig and Meredith Milton, Summit's Vice President of Production, will oversee the project for the studio.
I wonder how they're going to decide what kind of Men are From Mars, Women Are from Venus movie to make first. Summit President Erik Feig is going to be like, "I want it to be an action/sci-fi movie!" while Vice President Meredith Milton will be all, "But I want it to be a romantic comedy!" Sounds like it already is, Meredith! Whut-oh! Here we go again!
