'Fantastic Four' Locks Director, 'Daredevil' Loses Director

Fox's superhero movie progress for today remains at a cumulative standstill. Well done, everyone.

On the one hand, the studio did at last secure Chronicle director Josh Trank to direct the The Fantastic Four reboot they need to get started on before they lose the rights. Trank has been attached to the project since the start of the year, but since then has been courted by Sony to direct their Marvel superhero movie, Venom. He's expected to make the film his next project, thus safeguarding that the Fantastic Four rights won't revert to Marvel, who would have probably just ended up using them to make a fan-appeasing film that would connect to a larger universe with the kind of galactic threats the superhero quarter thrives against. That won't happen now.

It may, however, happen with Daredevil, as 30 Days of Night director David Slade has now left the project due to scheduling conflicts. He's been attached to direct a reboot of the blind superhero since March of last year, but script issues and haunting memories of Ben Affleck's faraway gaze have long delayed production--which needs to begin by fall lest, once again, the rights default to Marvel, so expect a new director announcement quite soon. But don't expect to like it.
