Indonesian Action Hit 'The Raid' Soon Becoming Less Indonesian

Gareth Evans' Indonesian action film The Raid won the audience award big North American buzz at the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness sidebar, and now it's time to see how that movie's premise does with less Asians and more English. Deadline reports Screen Gems has acquired the remake rights to the genre film, which focuses on a Jakarta SWAT team's dashed raid turning into a deadly escape from a powerful drug lord's locked-down tenement. Original producers XYZ Films will remain in that capacity for the remake, while Evans will executive produce but won't return to write or direct, thus leaving the possibility open for just the right writer and director to turn this into a Vince Vaughn vehicle about the actor fighting to escape a weekend at his in-laws' upstate cabin. Fingers crossed.
Anyway, if you haven't seen the original The Raid, you should at least take a look at this pretty violent, probably-too-bloody-for-work trailer. A dude breaks a wall lamp with another dude's head!
