Hanks Returning to World War II To Confront Nazis Yet Again

Forever grappling with the demons of a war he fictionally braved, Tom Hanks will once again return to World War II in Universal's adaptation of Erik Larson's nonfiction best-seller, In the Garden of Beasts. Hanks is producing with Gary Goetzman through their Playtone banner, and the actor is expected to star as well.
While Saving Private Ryan cast Hanks' watchful eye on the front lines of fighting, this project will find Hanks in a more personal battle with the Führer. He would be playing William Dodd, the U.S.'s mild-mannered real-life ambassador who, over the course of living in '30s Berlin, slowly came to the realization that those Nazis guys were doing shit crazy enough to make them stock villains for generations to come.
The adaption, of course, fits snugly into the Hanks wheelhouse. As star of the aforementioned Saving Private Ryan and producer on both Band of Brothers and The Pacific, the Oscar-winner long ago revealed the ultimate goal of acclaimed career: getting honorary admission into his local VFW. Come on, guys, will you give it to him so he can stop with this? He and Rita just want to go to the mixers.
