'Spartacus' Star Andy Whitfield Dies at 39

More rotten news from the weekend: actor Andy Whitfield, former star of Starz Channel's Spartacus: Blood and Sand, died Sunday in Sydney of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was 39.

Whitfield was diagnosed with the disease in March of last year and, after treatment in New Zealand, had seemed to be recovering for a time. Unfortunately, cancer being the unbelievable asshole that it is, the disease returned shortly after and forced the actor to leave his title role on Spartacus. In a statement, Whitfield's wife, Vashti, said:

"On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer. He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was."

Fucking non-Hodgkin.
