I Guess We Need a 'Rollercoaster Tycoon' Movie Now
Continuing the recently-popular "why not?" trend of adapting video game into films because why-the-fuck-not, Sony today announced plans to make a movie out of Roller Coaster Tycoon, a simulation game series most users never play beyond killing a bunch of people with purposefully-negligent park design (see above):
Sony Pictures Animation has pre-emptively picked up rights to the Atari video game “Rollercoaster Tycoon.” Harald Zwart [of Agent Cody Banks and the new Karate Kid fame] is spearheading the development of the big-screen adaptation as a possible directing project and will executive produce.David Ronn and Jay Scherick, who penned the upcoming Kevin James comedy “The Zookeeper,” are attached to write what will be a live-action/CGI hybrid.
The “Tycoon” franchise, created by Chris Sawyer, is a popular series of computer games that simulate a combination of designing roller coasters and amusement park management. Each game challenges players with open-ended amusement park management and development while allowing them to construct and customize their own unique roller coasters.
Can I assume we'll also be seeing some 3-D added to that live-action/CGI designation? Because a 3-D roller coaster-riding simulation video sure sounds like a blockbuster to me! Or maybe more like one of the free CD-ROMs you'd get with your 1996 Packard Bell PC. Actually, yeah, it sounds a lot more like that.
