Mar 8 2010If 'Alice in Wonderland' Was Made in 1903... Oh, Wait, It Was
Just in time to capitalize on the popularity of the Alice Wonderworld movie, the British Film Institute has restored as much as has survived of the first, 1903 silent film adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic and posted it online. It may not have the modern special effects of Burton's recent film, but if you're as terrified by adults in bizarre animal costumes as I am, it's actually far creepier:
Alternately, this may just be someone's attempt at the comedy video "Guy Maddin's Alice in Wonderland."

I love silent films.

These visual effects suck - when was this made, like, a hundred years ago?

Hal - if you had read the sentence about the film, you would have learned that yes, it was made over a hundred years ago. It also states it at the beginning of the film.
Those 'sucky' visual effects as you you intelligently put it, were the very beginning of special effects. Catch up mate.

Damnit, you're not supposed to do the "it was all just a dream" reveal until the END!

#3 didn't take his/her irony pills this morning. A healthy body needs plenty of irony.
I won't insult the 1903 special effects, but I WILL insult this supposed "restoration". WTF? They have digital editing equipment that could completely clean up those frames. Did they just tape the broken film together (with masking tape) and call it a day?

Wow... I thought I'd have to wait at least 3 posts before landing a big one! Love chumming the waters.

What if #3 was just being facetious, playing along with the whole "obviously trolling" comment by posting an intentionally naive reply?
Eh? Yeah, think about that.

Wow, you know what? I am going to criticize these effects. A Trip to the Moon came out a year before this and looked about 50 times better.
This is like if a shitty Alice in Wonderland adaptation with unimpressive special effects came out right after a visually superior, far more innovative film taking place on an alien planet. Hmmm, history repeating itself?

Guys, Hal was joking/trolling. It says in the opening that it was made over 100 years ago. Unless you are all trolling as well, then I have been deceived.
