Mar 17 2010Conan News Item #2: Rose McGowan Gets To Be in Film Not Made by Robert Rodriguez
Remember how Robert Rodriguez kept saying how he was going to put his Marilyn Manson-tainted ex-girlfriend in a Red Sonja movie? He even let her do a cute little Red Sonja Glamour Shot to show her how serious he was. Well, I still don't know when or if that's still going to happen, but Rose McGowan is reportedly joining the world of Conan the Barbarian in another role.
Variety says the wooden star of WB's Charmed will user her knowledge of witchcraft join the new Conan film playing "an evil half-human/half-witch," which makes absolutely no sense to me. I didn't know you could be half-witch; I always thought you were either a witch or not a witch. Isn't it more an occupation than a race? It's basically just a magic chef, and you can't be half a chef. Maybe it's sort of like being Jewish, where being a witch is more of a cultural identity, and spell-casting is their equivalent of neurotic, self-deprecating humor? Any Wiccans, please comment.

Uh, so...This poster is just a big euphemism for sex I guess, or something. Like that sword is phallic and supposed to represent a young viewers penis, and shes about to lick it, right after....you've had sex with her while she was on her period.... So translated from young people speak, chicks licking bloody penis is SO HOT? I feel a generation gap here.

Honestly, this is just one of the many, many stupid things going on in the upcoming film. It's infuriating that they're doing a reboot and daring to call it "faithful to Robert E. Howard" when it's just a half-baked remake with bits stolen from other films. "Half Human/Half Witch" - just another entry in the grand cavalcade of idiocy.

Pffft, you're clearly ignorant of the Harry Potter mythos. A half witch is a girl with one witch or wizard parent and one muggle parent. Harry is a half-blood, so is Voldemort. Jeez, you guys don't know anything.

Perhaps whoever interviewed Rose McGowan for Variety had a hearing problem~is it possible she actually said 'Half-human halfWIT?'
I'm surprised no one beat me to that one~it's such a gimme.
When she was on 'Charmed' (I always found that show to be so badly rendered as to be unwatchable, until I was hospitalized and on IV demerol for three weeks. In that state it is great, because you can tune in at any point in an episode and watch for ten minutes and then nod back out. The experience of watching it is ENHANCED by not knowing what is going on or having any sense of plot continuity, which is great because if you are actually looking for either of those, you'll be sorely disappointed indeed.), her performance always seemed suspiciously like that of someone playing herself~maybe because it would be nearly impossible to 'create' a fictional personality that was any more generic, ordinary, lacking in interesting quirks and mannerisms than what's her name...Peyton? Pippa? Pamela? Patience? I'm not being funny...I really can't remember the name of Ms. McGowan's character on that show, and despite floating in the land of the synthesized poppy with 2 reruns a day sharing my cloud for all that time, I do remember the names of the other three Halliwells.
Also, as someone who has known quite a few practitioners of Wicca, I can attest to the fact that being 'half-Witch' is not really like being, say, half Jewish, nor is it a racial deal, like being half Portuguese. As religions go, Wicca tends to be more about actual practice than belief (it's not like, okay, hardly ever going to Mass but still you are always going to be Catholic, for instance)~and while certain talents may well be passed down generation to generation, one is NOT a Witch because his/her parents are, nor would that person be 'half-Witch' because only his/her mother is one. If that same person's father attended a Pentacostal church where the congregation spoke in tongues and took up poisonous snakes, we would not on that basis call him/her 'Half Witch, Half Crazy Dance-to-The-Glory Hillbilly'~we would say that he/she is a member of whatever religion s/he believes and participates in (though given that particular rhetorical combo, my bet would be that this imaginary person is devoutly confused and disinclined toward organized religion).
All THAT said, I thought Rose McGowan was surprisingly good as Cherry the One Legged Stripper With A Machine Gun For A Prosthetic Leg in the Robert Rodriguez 'Grindhouse' movie. She was pretty 'blah' in Tarentino's contribution, but Rodriguez's whole movie was just better in every way (just my opinion) and the acting was all around better because the actors had better stuff to do. And certainly it's unfair to judge ANYONE's acting by how they do at it in an Aaron Spelling TV series~the man made a billion dollars by adhering very strictly to the following depressing concept: A great many people find it stressful to be exposed to anything that they are not 100% familiar with~this would require thinking, and thinking is not enjoyable to them or relaxing, and people watch television to relax. In keeping with sad-but-true idea, his writers and actors were required to do nothing that could alarm folk by possibly being interpreted as interesting (don't give the impression that your character might have more to them than immediately meets the eye), never challenge comforting stereotypes (poor people smoke cigarettes, wear bathrobes in the middle of the afternoon, and speak in southern cracker accents regardless of where they live, for example), only emote excessively when the situation calls for Learning and Growing, which there will be lots of (no such thing as a pure sociopath~bad people are only good people with lots of childhood baggage).
My point~and there actually IS one: R.McG won't surprise me if she turns out to be good as a, whatever, let's just say 'some sort of halfbreed' in Red Sonja. It would be RIDICULOUS to put her in the lead, of course~too risky: there was a time, ten+ years back, when she was cute/hot enough to 'carry' a B movie (Jawbreaker, etc.~but she didn't do that alone), but she's dangerously close to 40 now, and her acting experience doesn't seem to have grown at the same rate as her 'sex bomb' qualities have receded. Maybe she'll build on the acting potential she showed as Cherry the Stripper, which would be great. Besides, she'll have to do that unless she wants to, you know, join Heather Locklear on the new Melrose Place.
Gee.This was long. I ought to start my own blog I spoze.

Youre right.
You are either a witch or not, there is no half.
