Yeah, that's about what I expected.

THIRST! (No, I didn't spell that wrong, I'm just thirsty...)

Why would the studio put "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" up for art direction against "Avatar" (or "District 9" even) when it's not even out yet? Why not wait for it to be considered next year? Idiots.

Except for Blind Side, the 10 best picture noms are the same as the 10 writing noms which was pretty much what I expected when they expanded the category.

@2-the thing came out in december limited release.

up, the acadamey really likes to eat out pixars vagina dont they.
kinda surprised to see district 9 in there aswell. movie made too much sense to be in there.

And WHY wasn't Avatar nominated for Best Original Screenplay?! Oh, yeah, it wasn't that original...

@2: I got an academy screener for it already... Maybe this will be Terry's lucky year. Or not.

OMG, Transformers 2 got nominated for an oscar!! John Turturro is my favorite actor I'm so happy for him!!

Why is Black Dynamite not nominated? I blame the Man.

Anyone else find The Blind Side to be overrated? In The Loop or A Single Man (among other things) should have gotten its spot.
Plus, was the Frog Prince really that good? Ponyo and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs were really two superb animated films.

Surprised 500 Days of Summer didn't get nominated for editing. I'll admit ,the idea wasn't entirely original, but the editing was superb.

Imaginarium came out everywhere up here in December.

Avatar had better not win. Unless of course it's for Special Effects or art direction. Best picture, nah - It was Pocahontas with a shit ton of cool cgi.

fantastic mr. fox?
star trek?
where the wild things are?

@4, 6, 11 but the only reason to release "Parnassus" in Dec would be for Oscar consideration... why do that when it's utterly obvious that "Avatar" is going to take any and all effects awards? STUPID!

Of course, the "real" best picture noms are given away by the best director noms. The expansion of the category doesn't really give the 5 extra movies a better chance, but I guess it does allow for more deserving movies to add Best Picture Nominee to their box art.

District 9 all the way, the only one that brought something new and original (fuck you it wasn't an Alien Nation rip-off).

Ben, the movie sucked. It doesn't matter what year it gets released in--it's gonna lose a ton of money. In order to make the most money, they released it as soon as they possibly could. Had they waited much longer, people would have forgotten who Heath Ledger was and the only reason anyone has to see it would have evaporated.

I'll give Terry Gilliam this: he's fuckin' consistent.

DISTRICT 9 BETTER WIN BEST WRITING. Avatar wasn't even nommed, seeing how...not original...it is.

Also, Star Trek was pretty bloody brilliant, wtf. :0

YAY FOR DISTRICT 9. I HOPE it wins... although unlikely.

I will never watch movies again if Avatar takes best picture. ANYTHING but Avatar - it was SO unorginal with SUCH one-dimensional characters it doesn't merrit an oscar for best picture - because movies are about telling stories.

Sure Avatat is all about "experiencing" their world but I don't think truly, this is what makes a good movie.

Anyway.. prediction: The Hurt Locker to win.

***Avatar

god avatar is so overrated and unoriginal and lame. i swear to g if it wins best picture and/or best director i will have lost all my respect for the oscars, what little respect i have left, especially after kickey rourke didnt win last year and they gave it to that american gating liberal douche sean penn. how the hell can you get nominated for basically directing green screens for 2 and a half hours?!

VAMOS EL SECTRETO DE SUS OJOS CARAJO!

Crap.... Disney animated films were famous for the triple rake in original music.

Kinda sad that with their comeback to traditional animation and music that they only got two nominations for original music.

What about Mama Odie's song... or Dr. Faciler's "Friends on the other side"?

How come Pixar's intro film "Partly Cloudy" was not nominated for short film?

I will give Cameron the Director, I can accept that. But if The Hurt Locker doesn't get best picture, fuck the Academy. I was pissed when Avatar won at the Golden Globes.

I compliment Cameron on what he can do, but that movie does not deserve best picture.

And where is the Road. That film kicked Avatar's plot-hole-ridden, Dances-with-wolves-in-space bollocks...

And how can Avatar even be nominated for best score, the music was cheesy as hell.

Moon.

and where the FUCK is Revance? This is unfucking excusable.

No moon? No Broken Embraces? No fx for WTWTA? My shit is now flipped.

Avatar

DISTRICT 9?

WHAT THE PISS FUCK?

Seriously, how can Avatar NOT win any of the categories? It's now one of the best movies of all time and most people know this by now.

@31

The volume of ticket sales doesn't have a direct causation with how good or bad the movie is.

I still believe that Hollywood has some sense left in their overbudget remakers land. I believe the Hurt Locker will win just like the Departed did. But..I believe that Cameron will win just like Peter Jackson finally did after shooting blanks twice before.

I still hope Realism in films tops the list of reasons why should a movie win. Dark Knight should have been nominated simply because it was a thriller more than a comic book movie for ComiCon fans to go home and masturbate to. If Avatar wins it means anyone with a next BIG 3D Film idea can win oscars...
