Weekend Box Office: An 'Avatar' For Christmas

avatar-tv-trailer.jpg

The weekend box office again went to Avatar this weekend, with the movie proving itself the most popular film for people visiting their families that don't know what to do with these people besides hopefully sit in silence for a couple hours so Dad will stop talking about how good he's getting at Googling. Here's how things ended up:

1. Avatar - $75 million. The first weekend was the real fans; this week was all the people who had Delgo 2/Fern Gully with Cats/Dances with Blue Aliens jokes they really wanted to get out there.

2. Sherlock Holmes - $65.4 million. Makes you realize how much time Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wasted writing these things when he could have made a fortune just writing and directing a single movie where Holmes kicks ass.

3. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel - $50.2 million. Strange, because all prior evidence has shown that singing, dancing chipmunks are Americans' highest priority.

4. It's Complicated - $22.1 million. This film was pretty appealing to a certain percentage of the middle-aged female crowd. It's reassuring to see relationships so much more complicated than your boring, loveless one.

5. Up in the Air - $11.8 million. Because the only truly merry Christmas is a Clooney Christmas.
