Dec 16 2009Another 'Alice in Wonderland' Trailer

Just because a movie is shot in three-dimension-vision doesn't mean shit needs to constantly be pitched at the screen like I'm a sitcom husband being chased out of the house by his angry, throwing-things wife. Tim Burton disagrees:

Next time, really just let Johnny Depp play every part. That's where this is going anyway and I think he could've made a very nice Alice.

I'll see it.

Is that pre or post-op Edward Scissorhands?

I think Danny Elfman's running out of ideas...he's ripping off Beetlejuice.

It really doesn't look that great.

Honestly? I think Tim Burton needs to find new people to play his leads. Casting Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter over and over and over agin is getting pretty fucking old.

I like Alice in Wonderland when it's more trippy than Lord of the Rings.

Seriously, epic battles in Wonderland? Too Narnia.

I think Tim Burton really needs to evaluate what he's doing at this point. His 'creative' output as of late has been pretty atrocious and he looks like a crazy hobo. Just make movies based on your own concepts or at least new concepts. I certainly didn't ask for this remake or re-envisioning just like I didn't ask for a Charlie and the chocolate factory remake.

@8 - I bet he regrets not asking you. I know I get pissy too when people make movies based on things I like and don't ask me.

Oh well. Tim Burton is getting old, and ran out of his own ideas. Not the first director to do so. Thus every remake of a TV show and re-imahining we get every year.

Johnny Depp is just in it for a check and to entertain his kid. No harm in that I suppose, nobody gets into acting so that their talents go unnoticed. After the next Pirates movie, he'll be back to doing something serious again.

How many people are going to complain about how awful it is, and then give them your money anyway just so that you have the right to complain about it, thus funding his inevitable remake of The Wizard of Oz? Just don't go see the shit. If enough people stop, the money stops, the movies stop...not rocket science.

Unless you're Uwe Boll. That shit's unexplainable.

damn gingers...

More confused looking actors surrounded by technicolor CGI vomit. No thanks.

"Technicolor CGI vomit?" You're so busy trying to be clever that you failed to notice the muted scheme that's actually at play in this trailer.

Burton's output of late has been "pretty atrocious?" Really? Weird. I thought his last film was the best of his career by a country mile, and a number of fans and critics agree with me.

How about you wait until we at least enter the year in which the movie is due out before you start your moaning and crying?

Pip, I was just about to say the visual style looked oddly drab and dirty for Wonderland. But I suppose that's only fitting if Burton's trying to turn Alice in Wonderland into LOTR. And Sweeney Todd is his best work? It doesn't compare to Big Fish, or even Ed Wood. The fake blood looked like strawberry yogurt, and there wasn't a single likable character. Sorry, but I think Tim's past his peak.

@12

"The muted scheme that's actually at play".

Muted? You've got to be kidding me. It's a degree or two away from Shrek.

This looks to me like the least restrained thing he's ever done. Happy to be surprised, but for now this looks like just another classic story given the same old Burton makeover.

^

I say this as a fan of Big Fish, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow etc.

Would like to see him go back to character/drama/suspense-driven stuff is all.

I'm really torn about whether or not I want to see this but since I didn't even see the movies I REALLY wanted to, in theaters, I'm just going to wait for OnDemand for this as well.

But anyways, about ole Timmy. The man has typecasted himself. Same woooooosajdhskhhhhAAAAAAoooohhhhh music for the same composer, same lead actors and actresses, and the thing that bothers me most (speaking for a trained fine-artist's point of view) the color scheme!

I'm sick of his palette. Everything is all at once over-saturated but under-toned with grays, and all the colors fall on the cold end of the spectrum (there are hot and cold versions of every color - he's chosen all cold. Everything as result looks dead, metallic, and harsh.) He's used this color palette for most of his movies but this one looks nearly identical to CatCF. He tries to be super colorful and cheery and comes off as goddamn creepy and it's no world I'd ever want to enter.

I think his head is too far-shoved up his own ass to turn back now. He used to make movies that rang with real originality and didn't rely so heavily on gimmicks. But now, it's all gimmicks with him, and the more gimmicks there are, the less the soul.

Watching it! ^_^

What's up with the Madona Teeth!???

@16 your a douche.

you know what i think? i think tim burton is great. no matter what. they way he makes movies and imagery and color schemes he uses is what makes his movies his, even if it is another remake of the same old tale of alice. it's like his signature touch, it's what is expected of his work and how people recognize it as his. his movies are fun and made the way he wants. if you want alice in wonderland to look and feel different, then make your own movie and do it the way you want. if you think you can do better, i'd like to see you try.

I like it. It really seems to create the vibe that the original novels created. More horror.
I love Johnny Depp and I have many friends who will go see ANY movie just because he's in it. That is one way to make money my friends.

And if you don't like Tim Burton STFU and don't watch his movies. It is as simple as that. You aren't going to change anyones minds spouting your none sense. I'd honestly like to see you do better.

The fact of the matter is, that Tim Burton is obviously a good director. Production companies are casting him as the director and giving him a HUGE budget to make his movies. In hollywood, money isn't given to just anyone. Not that kind of dough anyway.

Big Fish is the only decent movie Burton has managed to shit out in a very long time. Anyone who thinks his version of Sweeney Todd was anything other than a massacre of beautiful music needs to listen to a cast recording that doesn't feature people more famous for their roles as zany pirates than their ability to carry a tune. Don't get me wrong: I love me some Alan Rickman, but that guy couldn't sing is way in to a paper bag. -In- to.

This movie will be bad. If the trailers are this boring, imagine when the -really- shitty parts are back in between the bits they thought were the best?

awesome. i look forward to it

@22: "I like it. It really seems to create the vibe that the original novels created. More horror."
Really? What books were you reading, because the vibe I got was light absurdist fantasy and social satire.

"I love Johnny Depp and I have many friends who will go see ANY movie just because he's in it. That is one way to make money my friends."
Great, so your friends lack critical thinking skills and the ability to form opinions beyond DEPP GOOOOOD. Way to advertise their shortcomings.

"And if you don't like Tim Burton STFU and don't watch his movies. It is as simple as that. You aren't going to change anyones minds spouting your none sense. I'd honestly like to see you do better."
Where did this philosophy come from that you can only criticize something if you've personally done the same thing better? It's like, "Oh yeah, well I'd like to see you successfully run a massive corporation before criticizing Enron executives for bungling and lying their way into bankruptcy." It's just "none sense." You don't need to be a gourmet chef to identify a shit sandwich.

"The fact of the matter is, that Tim Burton is obviously a good director. Production companies are casting him as the director and giving him a HUGE budget to make his movies. In hollywood, money isn't given to just anyone. Not that kind of dough anyway."
OBVIOUSLY. When has Hollywood EVER given obscene amounts of money to a talentless hack who produced a piece of shit that made a profit because it was aggressively advertised to the lowest common denominator? I can't think of a SINGLE FUCKING EXAMPLE.

Now, while I agree with you that Burton has the potential to make great films, and certainly deserves the money more than Bay, Sommers, Cohen, Turtletaub, or any number of much weaker and less creative filmmakers, his track record has been pretty uneven overall. Even a genius creates a stinker now and then, and this looks like it will be one of his mediocre works at best. Most of us are complaining because we know Burton can do better, so we hold him to a higher standard.

damn so much hate. I haven't watched the trailer, or even the original Alice in Wonderland, but I'm going to watch this movie.

Thanks for your input, fricking white people. The Nightmare Before Christmas is enough for me to be sure anything that artist makes is art, and I trust him to it. God I love subjectivity.

@26: Considering that movie was as much (if not more) Henry Selick and Danny Elfman, then methinks your allegiance is a bit misplaced. To quote the -director- or Nightmare, Henry Selick: "I don't want to take away from Tim, but he was not in San Francisco when we made it. He came up five times over two years, and spent no more than eight or ten days in total."

So if you're going to be subjective, at least be informed. So start boning up on your Henry Selick movies or find a new reason to adore Mr. Burton. And for the record, I'm black as the day is long.

yeeeiii... i looveee it.... i'll see the most fantastiiiiic moviiee..!!
i'm sooo exacted...!!! XD

I think you all need to stop bitching and speculating about how shitty this movie will be until you see for yourself.

Johnny!

As much as I love Alice in Wonderland I'm questioning the plot of this new film. It seems awfully close to the book "The Looking Glass Wars" by Frank Beddor. Now, while I know that there is only so much you can do with this recycled story, it feels a little too close for comfort for me.

depp looks like madonna with that makeup and the giant gap in his teeth

I really wish we could get Tim Burton to stop making movies, but from the looks of the comments here he has all the motivation he needs...money supplied by a fan base that buys a ticket to every piece of shit with his name tacked onto it in hopes it will live up to an awesome Tim Burton movie that they probably never saw in the first place.

It really looks awful. The Mad Hatter shouldn't look undead, I can't get passed the Red Queen's horrible giant bobblehead, and Helena Bonham Carter's weird lisp accent (she used the same one for her character in Merlin) and the epic battle thing is just... wrong for Wonderland. Alice in knight's armor? Seriously? Anne Hathaway looks more like a ghoul than she usually does here.

I liked Ed Wood, and The Nightmare Before Christmas will always be a holiday classic as far as I'm concerned, but Burton should never be permitted to touch anyone else's story. He revels in his lack of research. He says with pride that he's never read any of the source material for any of his adaptations. He's the classic egotistical director who doesn't just want to make a movie, but wants to make Tim Burton's: movie. When you have to have your name in the title, when you're more important than the movie, it is doomed to fail.

@22 Shut up if we don't like it? That's a real intelligent argument there. Also, he must be good because they give him money? How many Scary Movie, Date Movie, Disaster Movie, etc films have their been? How many people tune in daily to reality television? The majority is often wrong.

@9 Uwe Boll was able to make movies because there was a tax loop in Germany where investors could turn a profit on their movie if it flopped, so he was actually intentionally making horrible films to exploit this law. They have subsequently changed this law just because of him. Notice it's been a while since his last film?

@34: Wait, are you saying Uwe Boll literally lived out The Producers? My god, that is beautiful.

I think everyone needs to settle down and let an artist work. Who do you think you all are to tell someone that their art is wrong. You're wrong. You can not like something...but don't criticize what you don't understand.

@12 His best film is Ed Wood

@ 36

A little translation.

"I am an enormous faggot who thinks that Rage Against The Machine are the best thing that's ever happened to both music and anarchism (Which is great). I like to sob at things and judge judgemental people all day long. Please, rape me with a shovel."

I hope you find this useful.

Johnny Depp looks like a red-haired Elijah Wood in this film.

I love Tim Burton. I also equally love Johnny Depp, Elfman (the composer) & Helena Bonham Carter. For the most part I'll see anything that they're in together, buy the dvd, etc.

HOWEVER, I don't think that Burton is really pushing himself any more. Every movie he's made recently has the same actors, same color scheme, same music... there's no originality to it. Even in this movie it's still the same stuff. I just want to see something *new* from Burton! He's typecast himself & I just really wish that he'd do something a little different.

The stuff he puts out now is good, but honestly? It's not great. His stuff doesn't give me that tingling rush of endorphins & excitement that I used to get when I saw his work. The problem is, I know what to expect now from his stuff. The only difference in this particular movie is that the costuming & effects are slightly more colorful & outlandish- but not by much. It's like putting a hat on the same old stuff & trying to package it as new & innovative- you can't hide that it's still the same old thing you've seen before.

I'll see this in theaters, but I don't rush out on opening day like I used to. Nor am I first in line to purchase every single piece of merchandise either. (And trust me- this thing will be over merchandised.) Burton has sold out. I don't bear any ill will for him because of this- it ensures that he'll be able to make more movies. I just wish that occasionally he'd put out a little product that's different than what he does now.

Although I'd settle for him finding a few new fresh faces for his films & making a film where it doesn't contain Bonham Carter or Depp. That would be nice.

Looks like the good shit. Enough Said.

So what exactly constitutes as great nowadays?

I'm positive that every single one of you will give different answers, whether they are well constructed, educated, or simply gushing with excitement.

The point is that this movie will be seen by people who love Tim Burton, love Johnny Depp, love Helena Bonham Carter; or those who hate all three.

Why?

One side wants to see Tim's interpretation of the Alice in Wonderland books (and yes it does look like The Mirror Glass Wars), while the other side just wants to bash him because they think he can do better stuff...according to their tastes.

Either way, you're just endorsing this movie and Burton's genious. Love him or hate him. Take it or leave it.

If Burton wanted to make a fantasy war movie, he shouldn't have chosen a nonsense kid's story. After Jackson fucked up the Lord of the Rings I guess this is all that was left...

It is drab and dirty looking because inside Burton's and all the little Hollywood producer's and actor's heads it's all drab and dirty. They have to go with what they know...
