Nov 2 2009'Matrix' Producer Working on $150 Million Muhammad Epic
Who better to handle the delicate subject of Islam's Prophet Muhammad than a producer on The Matrix, Face/Off, and Alien Dragon vs. Vikings: The Movie? No one. He's obviously the best choice to help make something with so much potential for angry, violent responses. So let's go ahead with this (Thanks, Sharkey):
American Barrie Osborne, who also produced The Matrix, told Reuters the film would be an "international epic" aimed at "bridging cultures".In accordance with Islamic rules, the Prophet cannot be depicted on screen. Images of the Prophet are considered blasphemous by Muslims.
The $150m (£91m) English language film should go into production in 2011.
I wonder who's going to not play him...

Obviously Jim Caviezel

So if he can't be on screen...
Is that the actual face or just any portrayal. Because if it just the portrayal then the movie is going to be TOUGH to make.
Also, now this is a legit question so no one get offended, if he can't be photographed or portrayed in images, then does anyone know what he really looks like?

I'm looking forward to them bridging the gap without omitting Muhammad's marriage to and sex with a 9-year-old girl, Aisha. Or Muhammad murdering thousands of people to spread his religion. Maybe they can just rip off Passion and have two hours of gore-porn.

Frankly No. 3 given the choice between hippy who got nailed to a cross or successful general as your messiah I know who I'd pick.
Does anyone know how strict Muslims are about that whole depiction of Mohammed thing? It may just be some of the more hardcore ones. It's probably of no consequence as this film will undoubtedly be crass and offensive to all concerned.

You're welcome, Mr. Stuff Watcher.

So the entire movie is going to be like a scene from Home Improvement where Tim is talking to his neighbor?
Culture bridging at its finest.

If you want a little more background on the guy they want to portray, have a gander at this... fun stuff [rolls eyes]...

@ no 4 - i agree with your comparison but tell me, which is scarier, a general who said 'death to the infidels' and it became so, or a hippy zombie who said 'love everyone' and in who's name some of the worst wars and atrocities in history have been carried out (e.g. the crusades, the inquisition, the holocaust, genocide in Rwanda, north and south america, thaiti, hawaii, even W telling us that invading Iraq was God's will!)
look up the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy and the resulting fatwa to get an idea of how pissed off some muslims will be about this movie. bear in mind that the guys issuing fatwas could well be the ones recruiting matyrs for jihad
p.s. i was brought up catholic so i'm probably going to hell for refering to the holy son as a zombie

but then there will be arguments about the voice. is it a western voice? subtitles? I am sure someone (religious in any facet, no doubt) will be offended. I am just a film buff, so I'd be interested only if it brought something new to the table...if they are already dropping $150 mil on it, then it better have sweet CG!! I am sure the Koran, Bible, Book of Mormon, Torah, what have you are all filled with super cool fantasy sequences for today's newest AfterEffects explosion.

I smell a fatwa coming on.

Personally I would like to hear more from our commentators on the merits of religion, truly enlightening stuff.

it's not such a big deal really, lots of films have been made about the prophet in a similar way. the only touchy subject is that it's an American production and a lot of people will see it as an attempt by the Hollywood Zionists to cheapen and warp the message. after all, how the fuck do you explain a sci-fi writer/director being involved in what should be a historical lesson.
But regardless of whether it's a fair portrayal or even a good movie for that matter, religious types just love to get at each others throats on these types of things and you can bet that a fair number of them will are going use it to vent their frustration through violence instead of use it as a stage for discussion. But in my opinion, that's probably Hollywood's main intention! after all, the more people are bickering over a fucking film an making a spectacle of themselves, the less likely they're going to be sorting out real issues, and every act of violence will only further demonise Muslims in the eyes of the world.
Personally, the film is pointless, if the US wants to bridge cultures they should publicly burn every CFR member at the stake, which by the way, sounds like a good idea for a movie!

@1 : who the *beep* is that ?
@2 : Many other movies (arabic mostly) do not show him as well, and got good succes, more than that , even Jesus or Moses (Abraham etc) shall not be shown, drawn.
@3 : yeah some porn, i hate gore.
@4 : true, people only see what they want to see, most likely everyone gonna be offended.
@8 : the truth is always elsewhere.
@9 : you'll find me there (ie hell).
@10 : pbuh ? isn't he not even worth write the whole thing ?
@11 : even the voice is not allowed, there shall be things like : "And he said : ..."
@12 : there is no such thing as "Fatwa" this is pure blasphemy, none can talk in place of the lord.
14. onlyme - November 3, 2009 9:51 AM
I really would like to see how he's going to be portraited, since muslims are a little bit touchy about him, even about historical facts, a lot of him turns arround legends and not facts. There's no biography about the guy even muslims take a lot care when speaking about the prophet. A guy who contradicted himself twice and said that happened because the devil spoke trought him. If that happens be sure that Hollywood is going Fatwa..or kaboom if u know what I mean!
15. Pantsman - November 3, 2009 10:25 AM
So what happens when the first death threat comes in? I mean, there has to be a cheaper way to cave to religious zealotry. For example, grab your cellphone and shoot a 30-second clip of your best friend wrapped in a bedsheet shouting "durka durka" and call THAT a Muhammed movie. That way, when all the zealots call for your death, the religious rights groups call for your job, and the Vatican says the retards are well within their rights to issue their fatwa, you're not losing any money when you buckle and agree to never release the film.
16. crazy mel gibson - November 3, 2009 11:21 AM
A big fat fatwa indeed. the muslims HATE when people talk about their god. This can get messy.
17. alison - November 3, 2009 1:09 PM
isn't barrie osbourne one of the producer's of peter jackson's lord of the rings?
18. mohammed - November 3, 2009 3:07 PM
I hope they show all the butt sex, everyone knows that when Muhammed wasn't prowling after prepubescent shildren, he loved lots of gay butt sex.
19. ga - November 3, 2009 3:49 PM
@15: the guy who played Jesus in 'Passion'. With Jesus on your resume you're pretty much a lock for any future religious figure portrayed on film.
20. The Observer - November 3, 2009 4:13 PM
Looks like one bleeding-heart idealist director is about to get a much-needed wakeup call concerning the difference between world as it is and the world as he thinks it should be.
Building a bridge into the crater of an erupting volcano may be building a bridge, but it's a stupid and pointless bridge that will only get you a faceful of magma.
btw volcano = islamic fanaticism and magma = bombs
21. frank - November 3, 2009 10:34 PM
Wow, finally! Weren't you all just clamoring for this film to be made? I can't think of anyone who won't be looking forward to this! Oh wait, make that the other way around. Muslims will hate it for being inaccurate, Christians will hate it for being about Islam, and everyone else will hate it because it will be a shitty movie. I'm just baffled that this got greenlit.
22. Ibinixer - November 4, 2009 5:36 AM
@ No. 9 Eh, worst zombie ever, ate NO BRAINS, sought NO REVENGE, just showed his bloody hands to his mates and then flew off into space. The new testament is the worst zombie story ever, although marks for originality.
@ No. 23 No more Muslims will hate it than Christians hated the Passion for being an exploitative torture porn piece with an androgynous Satan thrown in at the background to ensure perennial Halloween rental value.
And there is always the chance that this could be of value.
Only foolin'
23. Sarah - November 4, 2009 10:42 AM
@ number 2, no on know what he looks like, just like no one really knows what Jesus or any other prophet really looked like. depictions means just an image-the reason for this is to stop people worshipping him and having idols.
and it comes as no surprise that when i looked in the comments there's a lot of *oh god crazy muslims gonna be pissed so lets slag them off*. whatever makes you feel better about yourselves fucktards. i think a lot of muslims, me included, will be looking foward to this.
24. Sarah - November 4, 2009 10:46 AM
oh and forget to mention there is already a film which another poster mentioned earlier, two in fact on this subject, "the messenger" (which i recommend) and an animated film-i dunno the name tho.
25. Johnny K - November 4, 2009 10:57 AM
"There's no biography about the guy even muslims take a lot care when speaking about the prophet"
umm, hello-theres quite a few bibliographies on him, one written by Usif ( i know i've spelt his name wrong) Islam (Cat Stevens).
and that site is a load of bull-they dont even back it up with evidence. you could say muslims worship a "moon god" (like pat robertson says) and you would believe it. you need to stop watching fox news and get out in the world.
26. Johnny K - November 4, 2009 11:05 AM
i meant biography, not biblography. Cat Steves, seriously, look it up.
27. onlyme - November 5, 2009 8:14 AM
OK #27, find me one in English that is not rigged with Islam doctrines or propaganda, I mean Karen Armostrong bullcrap. The only one that was wirtten circa 150 years after the prophet died and for sure the most accurate, was lost a long time ago. The others one are based on traditions not facts. For the ones that like reading I recomend robert spencer's The Truth About Muhammad. Of course, like every other writer that put the prophet under critical eyes, and do not see him as the god's truth to the world, his book is banned by muslims.
28. Mostafa - November 6, 2009 1:38 AM
This is very troubling news..... As this is a very sensitive subject
being a muslim and coming from a muslim country i know how much commotion this will bring. throughout the movie making history in the arab world short as it may be there have been many biographies about the prophet Muhammed but have not stepped over the boundries which are the depiction of the prophet's body/face also the depiction his voice is sacred. and on another note its not just muslim extremists who will get upset by this but most muslims around the globe as this is the matter of the first pillars of islam. being taught to highly respectful to the prophet mohamed peave be upon him
