Oct 21 2009Weather Channel Finally Playing Movies

weather-channel-movies.jpg

The Weather Channel has announced they'll be adding movies to their schedule at the end of the month. About fucking time, Weather Channel:

For the first time in its 27-year history, The Weather Channel® (TWC) will add movies to its programming schedule with “The Weather Channel Presents…” This new movie series launches Friday, October 30, with the TWC premiere of The Perfect Storm, starring George Clooney, which coincides with the anniversary of the ferocious “perfect storm” of 1991, on which the movie was based.

Following The Perfect Storm on Oct. 30, TWC will air feature films every Friday night in November. Weather plays a central role to the story, plot or overall theme in each of the movies selected.

Following The Perfect Storm, the films get slightly more questionably weather related. Foregoing an obvious choice like Twister (or maybe The Weather Man?), the network will next play March of the Penguins (snow!), followed by Misery (snow!) and Deep Blue Sea (tropical storm, sharks!).

Well, it's at least good to hear the Weather Channel has come up with a way to remain relevant when the internet has made TV weather news nearly obsolete. This should keep them afloat at least until someone comes up with a way to watch movies online, any time, for free.

terrible idea

This is beyond stupid. I check the Weather Channel to see if it's going to rain tomorrow, not to watch George Clooney. Unless they're running stats at the bottom of the screen, people are going to be "WTF" when they tune in.

And "Perfect Storm" makes a little sense, because there is a sequence where a meterologist quickly explains the conditions that contribute to a perfect storm (which, BTW, is a pathetically simple-minded concept that has been a curse to our language since the movie). But the other stuff is tenuous, at best. OF COURSE there are weather issues that drive the plot, but it is not the primary driver. "Misery"'s primary conflict is the obsession of a deranged fan, NOT the f*cking snow.

This is great! I definately never see enough weather raelated movies playing all day on tnt, tbs, or usa!!! I can't wait.

I think this looks kind of hilarious.

I guess they'll be playing a lot of John Cusak movies as well.

Cartoon Network starts showing non-cartoons.

Sci-Fi changes it's name to SyFy so it can play wrestling & reality TV.

Weather Channel wants to play movies.

...

Somehow, I think this can all be blamed on MTV not playing music for almost a decade & a half.

I can't wait to watch "Hard Rain" and "White Squall" again.

@6

Don't forget Comedy Central playing unfunny movies.

wait.....the have showed movies before. They showed Twister before......and I agree. stop trying to "boost ratings" with stupid sh!t

That is a bad idea. They need to make the Weather Channel like it used to be, where they had all weather, all the time!

Now.. if you're a TV network, and you try to boost your ratings buy playing anything that isn't even relevant to the reason you have your own network... that's just dumb. I can't think of any other insult besides 'dumb'

The viewing audience has changed. Due to the web, mobile and other means for receiving weather related information, The Weather Channel must change just like Headline News, MTV and even TLC. The Weather Channel is probably becoming a two dimension network. Heavy weather in the mornings and afternoons, series and movies in the evenings. Ratings is the driver. People tune in for very little periods of time to see their forecast and then move on. Even FoxNews and MSNBC changed the news arena, hence the reason CNN is in last place now among cable news audiences. They haven’t kept up with what people want. As far as AccuWeather, they have been around longer than The Weather Channel and would NEVER pose a threat to them, and The Weather Channel knows it. I have read that before long you will be able to receive your local forecast any time you like on The Weather Channel through multiple agreements they have with cable operators and satellite companies. I can do that now with pushing the menu button on my Directv remote. BTW, I will watch The Perfect Storm, great movie.
