Oct 16 2009Sam Raimi Concedes, OK, Maybe There Were a Lot of Bad Guys in 'Spider-Man 3'
Though still refusing to describe Spider-Man 3 as a "bullshit clusterfuck" (the only truly accurate way to describe it), director Sam Raimi admitted to the Coventry Telegraph that some of the criticism of his superhero film might have been accurate, and promised a back-to-basics approach for his next effort:
I think having so many villains detracted from the experience. I would agree with the criticism.I think I've learned about the importance of getting to the point and the importance of having limitations, and I'm hoping to take that into a production where I'm actually allowed to explore with more of the tools to pull it off with a little more splendour.
I hope I don't lose that edge that I've just found. That would be my approach to Spider-Man 4: to get back to the basics.
Raimi would then add, "And by 'basics,' I mean 'Spider-Man dancing in jazz more clubs.' That is my definition of basics."

Spiderman 3 need to be rated R and also needed a lot more Venom then it would have been great. Hopefully the actual Venom movie makes up for this failure.

dancing in more jazz clubs*

I love the blanket "NEEDS TO BE RATED R AND NEEDS VENOM AND NEEDS TO BE DARK" argument. NO IT DIDN'T. It needed a better story, yes, and maybe no 10 minute omlette scene, and perhaps a better resolution of all the hanging threads, but the lack of R rating is the least of its issues. I love SPIDERMAN - he's one of the few fun, colorful comics characters that is at his worst when they take him too seriously.

Venom's gay.

There was nothing wrong with Spiderman 3. It was the best of the three. Oh, the horror. TWO bad guys.

I loved "Send Me to Hell". He did an excellent job. If you could mix that sort of cinematography within Spiderman, that would be fantastic. Good luck!

@6 isn't it Drag Me to Hell?
Spider-Man can't be rated R and dark because that's not the character. It's like everyone thinks that if the Dark Knight was dark so it was a success. No, Batman was dark because that was his character.

Sorry, @5 WhatTheHeck. There were several things wrong with S3. And there were actually 3 villains: Sandman, Venom, Harry Goblin (just because he switches sides at the end doesn't mean he wasn't a villain), 4 if you want to count the symbiote as a separate entity (which it is). But that was a minor problem. The bigger problems were making MJ a complete whiner and having the "bad" influence of the symbiote suit be that Peter's a jerk, dances badly, and suddenly knows how to play the piano. What is this - "Hot Shots!"?
Actually, cut out all the Venom-related crap and its not a bad story (except for MJ being a whiner - who gives a f* about your lame acting career? You're dating SPIDERMAN, for chrissakes!)
Thank you. I feel better know. This room is cleansed.

oh, and @7 - word. Amazing how people in charge of multi-million dollar studios can't figure that out. Batman = dark, Superman = heroic (and NOT dark), Spiderman = funny, offbeat, AND heroic (and also NOT dark). Stay true to the characters (like Ironman and X-men) (mostly) and you've got yourself a good movie!

Raimi hasn't put anything out worth watching since The Evil Dead.

I have one question and only one for Sam Raimi,
"Didn't you see, Batman And Robin"
(How many heroes and villains do you need in one scene?)
12. Wile E. Coyote - October 17, 2009 1:55 PM
@11 The only real villain in Batman And Robin was Joel Schumacher.
I also liked Spider-Man 3. Sure there were some 'jeez...' moments, but overall enjoyable.
Funny thing about the three films so far is Harry's transition.
From kinda dorky, unloved rich kid........... to angry, unloved rich kid.............. to dorky/angry AND sleazy, unloved rich kid................. then to dead rich kid.

Spider-Man 3 was just a mess. From the "Darker Parker" thing to the singing/dancing to the silliness of Topher Gracie as Eddie Brock, to the pointlessness of putting Gwen Stacey in the film, the bad outweighed the good.

Okay, the first two spidey movies were alright, but the third? Worst piece of ****
ever. First of all, the 'emo' parker? Yeah, hair over one eye equals an emo dark parker. Give me a break. Secondly, the dancing, some of the acting, and the lines? Terrible. Also, why would you even try to add gwen to this movie? She should have been in the first movie with MJ as a secondary character.
Spider-man 1: Spidey vs the green goblin. Go through the origins, high school, life outside high school, bring in gwen stacy with a cameo by MJ (who couldnt be played by dunst). Then have Gwen killed, and end it with the big climatic batter of spidey vs the goblin.
Spider-man 2: Pretty much same as the second spidey movie but detail petes emotional trouble due to the dead gwen stacy. Do the whole giving up the hero thing, have him come to terms with everything, fight doc oct. More MJ cameos
Spider-man 3: have only one villan, venom perhaps (with someone else as eddie) Being the MJ dating, stuff happens, final showdown, cameo with harry figuring out pete is spiderman. End movie
spider-man 4 - harry as green goblin, MJ and pete are far along in their relationship, though its beginning to be tested due tot he strain of being spiderman - people come to terms with this.
IDK, but I think that would be better than some of the crap they come up with.

Hey now, Spider-Man 3 had a lot of problems, but that jazz scene was amazing.
17. mysterio - October 19, 2009 8:42 AM
Jazz Hands Spidey and the flying skateboard pretty much sucked up the whole movie. Of course it could have used more Venom and it didn't really need the flying giant sandstorm Sandman. Just regular violent, dim witted Sandman (he looked great by the way) would have been good.

#17 that sounds amazing. I wish the movies turned out the way you've described them :(

OMG WTF! I hated how Spidey 1 and 2 only had 1 villain each, HOW BORING!! Spider-man 3 is my favorite BECAUSE it had so many bad guys ganging up in Spider-man and he still managed to kick their azzez!

No. The problem with Spiderman 3 was the 90-10 bullshit romance to action ratio. Not to mention Kirsten Dunsts' face. Yuck. They should have:
a) killed her off at the beginning of the movie
b) quit it already w the bullshit dance scene...douche chills extraodinaire
and most importantly:
c) added a topless gwen stacy scene to mix it up.

the problem wasn't because of all of the villians... that was fine, the problem was all of the FUCKING DANCING!! i mean HOW many jazz dancing, street jazz dancing, broadway numbers and 'doing the twist' do you need in a superhero/action movie? was Sam Raimi trying to sabotauge his own movie? it would seem so!
It just makes me mad when people blame the problems with the movie on the three Villians, that was SO not the problem! i agree that they should've chose between using either venom or sandman, but they HAD to have harry as a 'side' villian (having him as the 'lead' villian would just make it too similar to the first movie). I personally liked the look of sandman in the movie, and THC was a good choice, but venom just seem like he was rushed into the plot last minute, i think they should have saved him for the next movie, or at least not kill him off...
anyways, there were alot more problems with the movie other than the villians:
cheesy break up scene
pointless amnesia plot
most of peter's 'funny' lines: 'i'm the sherif of these parts'
peter kissing gwen RIGHT in front of MJ ( i mean come on! at least do it in an aally like before, don't kiss her during a ceremony, INFRONT of your girlfriend! did you forgets she knows you're spiderman?)
ok, i'm getting a little too into this now, (on the verge of becoming 'Comic Bock Guy'...) but you get my point... basically the whole movie stunk
# 17,

sorry, i was gonna say...
#17, nice ideas, if only you had directed the movies... if only it were true :(
