So a powerful corporation is attacking a village because that village is located on a mineral worth millions? That sounds kind of like the plot to Ernest Goes to Camp. God I hope there's an awesome '80s montage when the aliens get ready for battle.

Fucking awesome. Can't wait until next week to see it in HD.
3. movies4theblind - October 23, 2009 4:58 PM
Need to see it in HD... Still on the fence about this one...

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa SOCIAL COMMENTARY
If I watch this and District 9 I will permanently hate the human race.
Which is odd cuz I totally would pick a fight with a race of giant blue cat people in order to obtain floating rocks worth as much as a ton of fresh cut Colombian Cocaine.
5. BLUE - October 23, 2009 5:27 PM
For some strange reason, this show seems cliched borrowing heavily from other films. I know I might get a lot of hate but I see:
Delgo/Pocahontas- two races falling in love with fierce opposition from the more tribal group.
Battle for Terra/ Pocahontas- Attack in order to claim a large mass of land, for precious stones and other reasons.
There are much, MUCH more but Pocahontas really sticks out the most.
Anyone else sees this?
6. pmoney - October 23, 2009 5:46 PM
i don't like giant cat people from space so i probably won't like this.

@ Blue: Yeah, I see it too. It seems highly derivative to me, as well, which probably isn't terribly surprising since Cameron yoinked the basic premise for "Terminator" from an episode of "The Outer Limits." He's not known for original ideas, really. I'm sure it'll look great and do a berjillion dollars in business, but...I dunno....just hard for me to work up any enthusiasm for it somehow.

@ Republiot 3.0
Cameron got the main idea for this movie from a 1957 novella, the story of course, is not being accredited.

"Don't forget which team you're playing for..." Sooooo - in addition to the corporate vs. native commentary, WE GET SOME MILITARY "DON'T ASK DON'T TELL" policies too! Right?
10. first haha - October 23, 2009 8:01 PM
Some of you are freaking hopeless(@5 and 7). Ok, sure, I see so much of Aliens in District 9. BECAUSE THEY BOTH HAVE ALIENS! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Check this out: Matrix is so lame because Tombstone totally had the long black coats first. OMG!
Doesn't Men in Black seem like a rip off of Independence day? Because there was TOTALLY SPACE SHIPS IN BOTH OF THEM.
11. AnnaDraconida - October 23, 2009 8:12 PM
Yup. Still looks like shit.

Nice infodrop, # 7. It seems there were 2 episodes, both written by the great Harlan Ellison.

Since they settled out of court with Ellison, that does tend to confirm Cameron's use of Ellison's ideas.

@10, your argument is invalid!
What 5 and 7 are trying to say is that they have very similar plot lines/devices. The arguments you brought up is different from what their saying.
There are many similarities with this and other shows, not physical similarities, but in regards to plot elements.

Doesn't look like the best movie ever to grace the cinema screen. But does certainly look like an exciting adventure.
For those whining about social commentary... Have you looked at the world lately? Or are you too busy watching the stupid lives of rich people on Reality TV? Yeah, I though so!
15. JWM - October 23, 2009 11:28 PM
@7, @12, let's not forget Cameron's theft of the concept for AM...I mean, Skynet.
I'll give the guy a break because all of his work has been highly derivative, just put back together inventively enough to make it fresh and entertaining.
@10, you know nothing. Matrix is a derivative mix of Kafka, Orwell, Ellison (we see AM creeping back into the concept again) and just about every other dystopian author of the 20th century. But you and "Brandon" do an admirable job of completely missing a point, you trolling dullards. I normally hate to argue with 12 year olds, but you caught me on a bad night.
16. TetraShiva - October 24, 2009 1:13 AM
@15
Matrix was actually a combination of the Monomyth from A Hero with a Thousand Faces with ideas lifted from Ghost in the Shell & gnostic Christianity. But, whatever. I certainly don't come to this site for the commentary. It's close to YouTube level bad.
17. dave - October 24, 2009 1:40 AM
Of course it's not a 100% original story. What story is? I would say Delgo and battle for terra may have taken from Avatar, not the other way around. Cameron has been working on Avatar for more than 10 years.
Even though the story is no where near original, what Cameron is trying to do with it is. Terminator wasn't an original story, but Cameron made it compelling. That's his role as a story teller and director.
There are no more original stories. All stories can be broken down into basic concepts. The key is to make the story compelling. Cameron is one of the best.
18. Disneyfied - October 24, 2009 2:57 AM
No matter what, every time I see photos or trailers regarding Avatar all I can think is Fern Gully.
19. Matt - October 24, 2009 10:53 AM
I've come to the conclusion that everyone on this site is a lame ass troll or some tool who has NO idea what they are talkin about. @16...how does this not look "epic"? I think the trailer is great and the movie looks "epic" as fuck! Everyone I know is stoked off their ass about this film. See you in line come December :D
20. first haha - October 24, 2009 3:00 PM
@15 OMG YOU'RE SO RIGHT. All I need to do is read a Kafka book. What am I thiking watching the Matrix? It's the same thing! *roll eyes*
21. Eddy - October 24, 2009 4:10 PM
@20: I agree. Fern Gully.
22. YoLoL - October 24, 2009 10:01 PM
A must see. It's incredible the work of this director, I've been fan of him since Terminator and he never stops to amaze me... well perhaps in True Lies ;)
Have someone read the original script? It was easy to find it in the nineties but no it's not. I wonder how much it changed.
I read that if this one is successfull he will be doing to sequels, let's see
23. Eman - October 25, 2009 11:09 AM
that THIS...(almost says IS SPARTA!)... IS OUR LAND!!
24. Rob - October 25, 2009 11:22 AM
Although I do agree that some plot elements are rehashed, #18 is right: what Cameron does with it should probably set this one apart. After the teaser I was a little mortified - maybe it was the use of the Papyrus font in a trailer...
After seeing this though, I have some faith. The plot seems workable since the trailer fleshed out the story a little bit more. I'll definitely write an article on this trailer as soon as it's official version is released.
25. Matt - October 25, 2009 3:50 PM
Anyone who thinks this movie looks like shit after seing this (or the official one next week) is a tard. This movie looks incredible! I love the scene with the bad guy drinking his coffee in the gunship while missles and such are being fired off....SICK!
26. Mr.Mr. - October 25, 2009 7:51 PM
Hmmm, seems semi based on the British and the Native Americans.
well at least the stealing of land and mass murder, im pretty sure they didnt have space ships and giant flying lizards
27. Insatiable Peter - October 26, 2009 2:50 AM
It'd be cool if Bud from The Abyss, Sarah Connor, an Alien from Aliens, and Ahnuld wore head bands and ran amok in the background, yelling with their arms flailing in the air.
28. Turbo - October 26, 2009 11:15 AM
did anybody else chortle/guffaw when they read TITANIC? hahaha
29. huh? - October 26, 2009 12:31 PM
I think snl's "SPACE CATS" is better

It amazes me just how critical, and judgmental people are now a days.
1) There is no such thing as using too much CG, it is a film making tool that film makers can use as much or little of as they want to. And if you know anything about making CG it is a very tedious and artistically challenging. Its not easy to make something look photo-realistic using circles and cubes, and through an ARTISTS eyes this looks phenomenal. For people that know nothing, the special effects of this movie have been made through WETA DIGITAL, INDUSTRIAL LIGHT and MAGIC, And STAN WINSTON'S studio, A.K.A. the best of the best. In fact this was STAN WINSTON'S last big project before he died.
2) James Cameron's vision for this film was way ahead of its time. He made the script for this movie 14 years ago. Way before Halo, Way before Pocahantis, way before last samurai, 300, and anything else its being compared to. Actually many movie makers have stolen ideas from James Cameron's script for this movie. So this is the true original.
3)In other words this movie is a huge deal. It is at the forefront of bringing 3D entertainment into homes. 3DTV'S and Blu-Ray players from SONY, PANASONIC, and other name brands are being released into the market right after this movie comes out. So the success of this movie will make or break the industries. And as for story telling goes, you don't get much better than James Cameron. I guarantee you everyone who has seen Aliens remembers Ripley all armored up about to fight the Alien queen saying "get away from her you bitch". Or Terminator 2 with Arnold saying "Ill be back". Or even famous quotes from Titanic. The point is he makes you remember his stories.
I just wanted to clarify that for those with less knowledge.
