Oct 29 2009'Avatar' Theatrical Trailer: Officially This Time

avatar-theatrical-trailer.jpg

Here it is, nerds: the full-length trailer for James Cameron's big-deal sci-fi action goddammer, Avatar. Print out a copy so dad can see it too.

I knew wheelchair guy became a blue alien at some point, but until this trailer, I hadn't realized he'd also eventually turn into a mix between William Wallace and President Bill Pullman.

Is it just me or James Cameron just spend the last 5 years making one of those creepy 80's fantasy cartoons?

Is anyone really pumped or this?

I'm really pumped for this.

Video can only be displayed in the US, think. :(

I mean I'll see it to see it. But I'm not HYPED like other people. I have a friend whos like its going to be the greatest movies ever ( I dont think so)

And why is this trailer do we need to know every movie James Cameron has directed?

Look up!!!!!!!!

They can grow aliens in a tube but they can't fix paralysed legs. yeeeeeaah. 8/

gay

why do the natives speak english?

Did I see John Heder in there towards the end?

@4 Cameron hasn't made a movie since Titanic. I think that was about 10 years ago. They need to remind people just how awesome of a director he is. He has yet to make a bad movie. Not to mention, it's a common practice in movie trailers.

I think those that see this movie in IMAX 3D will be blown away, while the ones that see the movie in regular movie theaters will be underwhelmed somewhat. Personally, I'm pumped for this movie, and am going to drive hours to a "real" IMAX screen to watch it as it was meant to be.

@4 because if your not familiar with the Cameron the MAN you might be familiar with the movies.

Like someone could be watching the trailer and be like,

"I'm on the fence with this one-WAIT A SECOND! HE DIRECTED TERMINATOR!?!? FUCK YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH I'LL WATCH THIS SHIT UP because I enjoyed Terminator as a film. So obviously I will have a similar experience with this one."

Am I the only one who thinks this has "meh" written all over it?

Wait, I thought Avatar was that stupid Nickelodeon cartoon with the orange monk kid?
Also... KILL THE XENOS!

Ugggggghhhhhh! Ok i'm not excited about this movie at all, i have never seen a James Cameron movie i liked to date, except Titanic. On top of that there are so many better movies to make, i know there will be a ton of twilight movies but that's what people are into right now, maybe the same thing but with something different, obviously people love vamp's right now and hot dudes playing them, we're adults (or teens) and we don't want silly cartoons clogging up the theaters. I mean really, give me something with romance and drama, and if you have to make something crazy CGI like this at least make it fun like Transformers!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!

@10
"They need to remind people just how awesome of a director he is. "
Why?

"Not to mention, it's a common practice in movie trailers."
That doesn't mean it's needed, just that it's been done before. I think the common practice is what #4 was objecting to. I know I find it annoying to be reminded what movies the director/writer/producer/etc has done before.

"I think those that see this movie in IMAX 3D will be blown away, while the ones that see the movie in regular movie theaters will be underwhelmed somewhat."
So you're saying that, without the pretty special effects, the movie is not really that good. Is this why people need to be reminded what a great director Cameron is? Because this movie can't stand on its writing or direction, only its graphics?

Have fun burning $30 worth of gas to pay $15 to see a movie that's apparently not good unless you're too dazzled by pretty colors and loud noises to actually notice what's going on.

Also: the trailer pretty much told you the entire plot. I would say that detracts from the movie, but I guess if the point is to see pretty CGI, then who cares about knowing what's going to happen ahead of time?

That was hot!

Uh, yeah any one see Terra?

@6: Actually they probably can...if you watch the trailer again you will see a scene where Jake's boss says "you get me what I want and I'll get you your legs back...your real legs". Way to pay attention there poindexter.....

@14....You MUST be a troll.....No one can be as stupid as you. This is a LOVE/ROMANCE story at heart.....what the fuck do you think happens between Sam's character and Zoe's character?!?! They fall in love...etc. etc. Transformers?!?! You GOTTAAAAAAAA be joking....plus you make the reference about not wanting "silly cartoons" clogging up theaters? Um..."UP" was a "silly cartoon" and definately one of the best films of this year you fucking tard. Get off the computer and just stay you in your Twilight book.

@1 - you're right, this is pretty much on par with JAYCE AND THE WHEELED WARRIORS in terms of "Visionary Sci Fi," and I mean that as a compliment.

@14. - I don't know you or your gender but for that amazing run-on sentence, I love every fabric of your inter-nut-iness! God bless you for being the shining light in my otherwise grey day.

What the hell ! this video cannot be viewed from my location ? can it be viewed in the *beep* of the uploader ?

I cannot be angrier !

Any charitable soul, put this thing on some "world" oriented video sharing site ?

Here's also a trailer, not sure if it's the same.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/avatar/

@10 Really its common practice for them to do that on trailers?!? No Way I never knew that before.

All I'm saying is there need to list almost every major film he directed in the way they did?

@11 I'm not saying he's made bad films I have enjoyed most of his films as well. But I don't entirely agree with you for instance my girlfriend won't want to see this cause he directed Titanic.

So basically Pocahontas, Ferngully, The last Samurai and any other plot that involves a guy who invades another culture only to fall in love and decide to help that culture dressed up in a big budget.

James Cameron never made a bad film?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082910/

I've actually seen this and yes, James Cameron does indeed make some very bad films!

Um, Matt @18, if i'm a tard you're a fucking queef. Also, I don't read, only watch the movies, so yeah, you failed there too. And the fact that you thought UP was the best films shows your maturity level. WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!!

@14 I love it when a twitard starts to ramble on about how good twilight is. You must be really stupid to love that series. Any smart person would know killing vampires is the way to go.

On a side note, this movie looks pretty good, of course I'm going to save my money and just watch it online. I don't think it'll be worth the $15 to go to the movies.

@24
Basically. Only this time with blue Gungan-like xenos.
Also, I kinda wonder how much exploitation of foreign cultures was required to make this film, haha

At first I had my doubts, but this looks much, much better than I expected.

This looks absolutely terrible. The special effects are fantastic if it weren't for the cartoony/furry aliens; the alien world and human technology all look like they come from "hard scifi" where projections about the future are restrained and thought-out.

But even without the terrible design of the cat people, the story is so damned hackneyed. I don't understand why writers think there needs to be a love-interest or a villain in every damn story. Also, why are you revealing he'll turn on his own people? Isn't it enough that this "twist" is more predictable than the weather, did you have to confirm it for those of us who held out a glimmer of hope that this overdone element wouldn't be used?

In the end, it will make a profit but not be the spectacle Cameron's ego wants it to be. Just like Bay's Transformers 2, it is overhyped and will take away from the few good things it has.

Honestly...

It looks like Dances With Wolves in space to me.... Not THAT original.

Should be some nice CGI and etc, but what movie isn't packing that stuff in?

I'll probably watch it....

At home on Blu-Ray...

Maybe.

This looks. So dumb.

This looks ruh-tarded. It would be a lot cooler if the blue alien f cks looked....well COOL! They look like something for a 2nd grader to get a boner too. I hate this movie as much (or even more) as the trailer. ANYONE who thinks this is "awesome" should be kicked off the earth. PERIOD!!!!

So its an adaptation of what we did to the Indians in American history.
Awful. But better than "thirtysomething"

is anyone else wondering why cameron didnt step up and do terminator salvation instead of this wierd smurf shit???

wakah! wakah!

This movie should be called Dances with Blue Wookiees.

Hey, I Watch Stuff guy, when did your site start being read exclusively by gay teenage boys with no taste? It started with declaring the awesomeness of James Cameron and using Titanic as the example, and it just kept going downhill from there...

(for those who missed the subtlety - Titanic SUCKED!!! When it won all those Oscars is when I knew civilization was at an end. That's when I predicted that the economy would collapse and a lame series of books about teenage vampires would become uber popular, thus signaling the apocalypse.)

@Erica

If you're having problems, cause your outside of the US. There is a program called Hotspot Shield you can download for free.

Davd @10: A better way to make your point (i.e. a way that wouldn't prove the opposite) would be: "Cameron hasn't made a movie since Titanic. I think that was about 10 years ago. So hopefully they'll have forgotten he directed that and only remember his good stuff, like Teminator and The Abyss."

Anyone else think the characters and environment are right out Word of Warcraft?

@15
Why does it matter to remind people? Because he hasn't made a movie in 10 years. Not to mention Cameron has one of the best track records when it comes to his movies. You don't think Nolan is going to use "from the director of the dark knight?" in his next movie? Pretty sure he already did.

You find it annoying? Why? That really seems like an odd thing to get annoyed at. Seems inconsequential to one's enjoyment of a movie trailer. If you enjoy movie trailers in general that is.

Sorry you construed what I said about the IMAX as saying it is only a good movie because of CGI. Cameron wouldn't make the movie just to show pretty CGI. He's always been about telling a compelling story through the use of technology.

The reason I say those who don't see it in IMAX 3D will be underwhelmed is most of the hype is coming from those that have seen the IMAX 3D footage. People are saying it will change the movie industry based on that footage. That's not saying the normal theater version won't be great, but I doubt it will be as awesome as the IMAX 3D version.
Do people remember the technology in the terminator movies? Or aliens? No, they remember the story. Those movies had great technology (at the time) and terminator 2 still stands up, but the story, writing, and direction made them classics.

Avatar could be a let down, but Cameron has yet to make a hollywood movie that isn't awesome and remembered. I'll go with his track record, until proven wrong.

I would agree with you that the trailer showed a good part of the story, but I don't think it will matter much. The relationships between the people wasn't explored much (especially the naavi(sp) relationships) so I'm guessing there is a ton more to see.

Again, if you don't want to see it, don't. But if you have ever seen Aliens, Terminator, Terminator 2, True Lies, The Abyss etc...you are gonna want to see Avatar.

(@40, I don't really like Titanic, but you can't deny tons of people still love that movie.)

@25 (I'M JUST LOVING THE NUMBER OF @ in this feedback!) - I love being the movie nerd to point out that Cameron left Corman's company mid production because of how shit PIRHANA 2 was turning out - he walked off his "first" feature to make a little movie with some Austrian dude- we all know how that turned out. After Cameron's career went places, PIRHANA 2 against his will was marketed as his "first" movie. What you got to say aboot that smarty pants?

@35.....you dork....Cameron sold the Terminator franchise off a LONG time ago. He's said himself that the story ended (to him) at the end of the 2nd film.

@43...No.....No it doesnt. Let me guess....the world in LOTR looks like the world in WoW too huh? Get off your computer and go outside for a breath of fresh air...maybe get laid while you're at it.

I just can't get over how in every one of his trailers we hear about the "visionary" James Cameron, how long the production took to accomplish and how technologically advanced the production is. It's like a James Cameron trailer formula.

Avatar's visual effects look absolutely fantastic, but I'm still having a hard time seeing where the five years went. This trailer was much better then the teaser though, and with the added details and footage, it's made me want to go check it out in theaters. I'd call that a successful trailer.

@46 and @47
Why did you just post snippets from my post? Anyone have a clue what that's about?

@49
The "visionary" tag is used so much because A.) it's true :) and B.) Avatar is a new IP. Not only that, but it has been veiled in secrecy for 10 years of development. So, they market it through Cameron's name, and not the name of some unknown intellectual property.

Look at District 9 this year. How was it marketed? Whose name was attached more than others? Peter Jackson. He didn't direct it, but he's the "name" that can sell a movie. As is Cameron's.

I've heard that Cameron spent the most time and effort on getting the animation right on the aliens. That's the toughest aspect of CGI. I'm sure much of the time was also on the look as well.

It's an awesome trailer IMO, and I hope you and I enjoy the movie as much as we did the trailer. We shall see.

Sorry, long time lurker, but first time poster. I have been privy to some of the IMAX 3D shots in this movie, and from my point of view, until you see those you aren't understanding why this movie is hyped as it is. I wouldn't be surprised if the reviews are mixed across the board, with an obvious correllation between sparkling reviews with IMAX 3D, and bad/ok reviews with average joe theater. Just my 2 cents. There has been nothing visually like this, and you seriously just cannot know this yet by watching some embedded video on the internet.

2:15 "Outstanding" Starcraft shoutout anyone?

Not impressed at all. If you know a thing or two about sci fi or movies in general you'd notice this doesn't push any limits within the art of making good movies. I understand why people would think this looks good, but give anyone millions to make a movie, years and years to work on it with little risk and you'd have to be Michael Bay to mess it up.

It's kinda depressing to keep hearing how people don't expect much anymore. I weep for Alita, it's already been exploited with the extension they made on the original novel and now Cameron will get his stab at it. Thank you mainstream for keeping your standards low.

Well, if nothing else, the animation is LIGHTYEARS ahead of the last "photoreal" CGI humans that Zemeckis crapped out. I'm blown away just by that. And yeah, the story is totally cliched and predictable, but in this case I'm willing to make an exception for the sake of such astonishing spectacle. Aliens riding dragons vs. spaceships and mech suits? YES PLEASE.

14 is clearly a troll. It's like she analyzed the all the majority opinions of this blog's readers and said, "I'll express the exact opposite of that!" Or she's an amalgam of bad taste so pure, she should be studied by science.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32127705/ns/entertainment-movies/

The first story that popped up when you google 'avatars technology'. Thats the hype. The story looks good. That acting looks good. The CGI looks good. The Track Record of JC is good. I will see it. In 3d, cause thats how it was meant to be seen.

Though this story doesn't explain it in detail, here is the nerdy science behind the "new ground breaking technology". You wear polarized glasses. That means they only let light waves in that are traveling a certain direction. up/down in the left eye, left/right in the right. the left eye is from camera one, the right eye is from camera two. If you shut one eye and then the other, see how everything jumps slightly side to side? This is how your brain processes 3-d in real life. The film is made with the 2 cameras that are slightly off set (About an eye width apart), the glasses you wear let you see the film in 3-d. its not the colors that are split, its the actual whole picture. And from everything I have heard, its is mind-fuckingly awesome. Just wait and see what others tell you when you don't go see it.

I am curious if this will work on your tv. Cause if it does, wow, tv could be about to get really cool...

I just have to write that as Camaroon loves pushing the technological belt to make movies as "awesome" as it could ever be.. while making movies about how that technology tends to FAIL the characters at every flipping turn or stab them in the back with a little nuclear war.

The problem I'm seeing here is that Everything is Clean. Every scene -including shots of "dirtied" up things or humans- looks pasted on dirty. You know that extra layer you place on your picture on your favorite paint program? That's what every shot looks like. It all looks like a really, really nice upgraded video game scenes with less pixelization!

This is 'Dances with Wolves' in SPAAACE! Only not quite as long. Camaroon is asking the savvy audience -few though the are- to take out the thoughts of traveling to another planet using some magical warpy thing to farm rocks and are still somehow stuck in the '70s technology of Space Hueys and Vietnam era wearing ground-pounding soldiers you see in 'Platoon'. Wearing gas masks but not covering the body to prevent the skin from absorbing the atmosphere. The body does absorb gases on the skin, so if it's bad for the lungs.. why does the grunts wander around with sleeveless shirts?

Ignoring the fact that Humans did this but couldn't figure out how to bring in asteroids to the planet and use them little things in their heads to calculate the trajectory to Bomb them injuns into goo. Sure, it'll turn some of the rocks into dust but it would make it worlds easier to mine since all of it will now be in little bits. Profits all for the Evil Co. since it cuts down the mining And dealing with the natives.. since their all goo now. Tree huggers of lady gaia with shed a tear for the goo- err naive afterward.

It is called ORBITAL BOMBARDMENT. Look it up everyone and tell me why that's a bad idea in harvesting those rocks. We have precision rockets to bean a raghead between the eyes now and nail a quarter size point on incoming rockets from North Korean right now.

But never mind all that- it's Camaroon's new movie. Brains are not required.

iwatchstuff writer is my new hero

Thank you for the alternate link !

Yeeeeeuck.
Wouldn't see it even if someone paid me to do so. If this trailer is supposed to "pump" people to see the movie, it failed

i saw this in the cinema's for some advanced advance trailer and i thought i was a piece of poo... IT WAS EVEN IN 3-D and i didn't like it...

Vaya cantidad de gilipollas, Dios mío.

You people suck.

um... where's the Air Bender?

I heard Cameron was developing this dual-camera 3-D type filming like 10 years ago with a partner, (Not sure who that guy was, we will call him DICK), but that Dick actual went and stole the idea, sold it off, and Cameron lost out HUGE on the actual product. So to spite Dick, Avatar is suppose to be the best 3-D film yet. (Hence why it took him over 5 years to create it). This is all hear-say though, I would be interested to know if anyone else has the scoop on this. I heard it from ShowWest last year in Las Vegas.

As for the new style of 3-D movies. I unfortunately hear a lot of people shooting down the idea, before they even go and check it out. I worked at a theater (best friend runs it still), that got one of these dolby-digital 3-D projectors, and I must say, its AMAZING! NOTHING like the old red and blue glasses, this is the real deal. The X-games movie blew my mind in terms of 3-D capabilities.

@55, there has definitely already been talk about using this 3D technology for TV. They are actual working on filming sports like this, the next 5 years are going to be very exciting for movie and TV technology.

"hang on to your butts"

"9. Leeto - October 29, 2009 3:54 PM

Did I see John Heder in there towards the end?"

No that was the guy that played JP in Grandmas Boy

He says "This is Ireland" at the end! Cool! :)
I'm finding it hard to tell. Is it live action when they're in human form? Or is it all cgi?

Looks interesting enough to me. Man, lol, can't believe how much time you people put into writing about a trailer. I'm a movie buff, so i'll watch it, # 14, what does Twighlight have anything to do with this movie in comparison? I loooooove good vampire movies, but these are two completely different types of flicks.

@1
"Is it just me or James Cameron just spend the last 5 years making one of those creepy 80's fantasy cartoons?"

- Nope but that'd be pretty sick if he had. Those creepy fantasy cartoons like Fantastic Planet were pretty crazy but clearly you can see the differences. John Carter of Mars has that same character design, would you complain if the director stayed true to the source material there?

"Is anyone really pumped or this?"

Yeah, why wouldn't we be?

@60...no you didnt. I call bullshit on you plain and simple. If you saw this in 3D, as I did in when they did that free preview thing a few months ago, you would be speaking a different tune. I dont care WHO you are. You did NOT see this in 3D.

wait a movie that's NOT a remake of some sort!?!?! go go go Cameron

to everyone that's excited for this movie...awesome it's great to have something to look forward to.

to everyone who's bashing it... get a life it's a movie and you haven't seen it how do you already know it's going to be bad?!?! some people just aren't happy unless they have something to bitch about.

More anti-establishment politically correct Hollywood bullshit.

Hey Cameron - why not just cast; Micheal "Screw All Rich People Except Me And My Elitist Lib Friends" Moore, Al "Oh Shit They've Caught On So I'll Change It To Climate Change" Gore, and Janeane "If You Disagree With Obama You're Goddamn Racist" Garofalo, and be done with it.

This movie should have been made for the Saturday Morning Cartoon and kids stuck in school crowds.

This looks amazing. Wow the CGI is awesome!
James Cameron is a great director I doubt he will let his fans down at this stage. He has the experience and perspective to pull off this and I hope it is a true masterpiece!

major issue is the lefty white guilt, natives good, westerners bad trying to steal land from the noble savage narrative. starting to get the feeling these are just blue ewoks.

what happen to the kid with the arrow on his head?

Did anyone else get a "NO BLOOD FOR [WHATEVER THE HELL THAT ROCK IS]!!!!" vibe from this?

I'm pumped for this movie, and am going to drive hours to a "real" IMAX screen to watch it as it was meant to be.

@69... sure great cgi and all that but i was boredddd and wanted to get out of there AND i did see it and there were all these cool guys in black suits and i was more entertained by them because they were like mr. white and mr. pink and mr. orange, and if i do see it though i think i'll see it in 3d because it wouldnt be worth it otherwise. like the whole body change thing has been done SO many times... but then again its james cameron so its gotta be worthy of something and hell i'll probably like it because sam worthington is a babe even if he is blue :D

Great, another "white people" -er humans are such evil rapacious bastards that will do anything for a dollar, especially if it can involve screwing over natives. I'm sure it will look nice and everyone will be amazed with the effects, but the politics on this one look as cartoonish as the whole movie.

OMG...SOOOOOO GAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!

I'm glad people are now understanding and recognizing what I had known for the past year and expected of the last 4 years.

proof? in my link.

I love le big bleu pussy!

The blue people effects look horrible. This movie is going to be worse than Titanic.

So basically he stole the plot of fern gully.

To be honest, this looks incredibly gay!

for all of you who say this is gay and stupid RIGHT BACK AT YOU STUPID RETARDS!

This is going to be an AWESOME movie! I love big, over the top, overdone, grandiose epics and this looks like it might the granddaddy of them all.

It even has the obligatory Big Speech at the end where Fearless Leader rallies the troops for the final battle against impossible odds. Of course they win but the question is who will be the sacrifice?

O God, how I love these movies :-D

..That this, IS.. SPARTA!!!

Anyone ?

Looks like the same way the original Star Wars derived its underlying story from the Spaghetti Westerns and Samurai movies, it looks like Avatar is a parable for the destruction of the Amazon Rain Forests. I think the movie will be worth seeing but I really, really hope it is not aimed at the young storybook readers themselves. - - There does seem to be a fair amount of Action / Violence in it, but that's hardly an indicator anymore.

That CGI looks like the dumbest shit ever, but I don't believe Cameron would make a total stink bomb.

If it wasn't Cameron I'd probably write it off as a Delgo or something.

@ 10, 25 - Yeah, I was going to point out Piranha 2. It was no Aliens. Sounds like he had limited control on P2 though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piranha_2

gosh - i hope we can count on a butt-load of crappy toys packaged in with happy meals and endless merchandizing of said feces.

Hey, wait a minute! I'm pretty sure I saw this movie when I was like 9 years old. It was called "Fern Gully".

the new sci-fi weapons they designed for this movie look pretty sweet - also, is it me, or does one of those army guys look exactly like Ryan Secrest?

Looking forward to the 18th of December, going to a cinema and seeing James Cameron’s AVATAR on a big screen in 3D!
