Aug 3 2009New 'Ponyo' Trailer: Such Adorable Utter Madness
A new trailer for Ponyo has been released, and it's a good thing I know director Hayao Miyazaki is an animation genius, responsible for such greats as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, or this more-complete preview might have got me thinking the film--which centers on a fish-with-a-human-head becoming human, a giant woman under the sea, and water coming to life in the form of fish--was a tad insane. Actually, now that I described it, that's unquestionably insane. But, because it's a Miyazaki, it's probably also a charming masterpiece.
Japanese storytelling: still firmly rooted in confusing mythology batshit crazy concepts.

Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke looked like some gay ass shit… so I think I'll pass on more japanimation centering around more crap that doesn't make sense

fireDog, congratulations, you're a fucking moron.

fireDog.
Please tell me that you were raised only to enjoy books based on how many pretty pictures they had, or that you love music just for the beat. IT would make so much sense. Those lousy story parts and lyrics really mess you up, don't they?
Considering just how amazing both Mononoke and Spirited Away were (particularly Spirited), Z's retort is all the more true. You are a moron.
You're the type of person who'd go on a wonderful vacation at some exotic location (or in the mountains, if that's your bag), spend time eating the most delicious foods, drinking the most expensive, top-shelf drinks, and still come home saying it sucked because you got bitten by mosquitoes.

Or even better:
firDog would go on a wonderful vacation at some exotic locale....and then eat at the nearest McDonalds, complain that there wasn't a Burger King or Budweiser and still come home saying is sucked 'cause everyone spoke "foreigner".

I'm a fan, but I've seen this film and while it's beautiful, it's weird and doesn't make a lot of sense.

"Spirited Away" took a few views to grow on me. "Mononoke" is easily the pinnacle of Miyazaki's work.

@ McE: lawl so true
I have seen most of Miyazaki movies, but I cannot remember if any of them were advertised by Disney...The commercial made it look just like another Disney movie, and not a good one. D:
I'm still going to see it, it's Miyazaki!

We were able to watch the film a couple of months ago, and it is super trippy. It may not be my favorite of his so far, but it is insanely cute.

I saw it last night. It wasn't bad, but it was definitely a children's movie. It was like the little mermaid without any bad guys.

I think Disney has released all or most of Miyazaki's stuff in the states (except for Fox releasing the earlier release of Totoro).
Saw it; loved it. There's not nearly as much going on in this story as any of his others, but I'll definitely see it again. Also glad that this trailer seems true to the movie, versus the one on Apple that makes it seem like it's all about Ponyo being sent by her father to save the planet.
