Aug 24 2009'John Carter of Mars' Gets Englisher
Samantha Morton (Synecdoche, New York), Polly Walker (Rome), Dominic West (McNulty!) have signed on to Andrew Stanton's adaptation of John Carter of Mars:
Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins and Willem Dafoe already are on board the production, which centers on a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where he becomes embroiled with the planet's warring people.Morton plays Sola, the daughter of Dafoe's Tars Tarkas, who must hide her softer side from her warmongering race.
West plays Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans who believes he is entitled to rule Mars.
Walker plays Sarkoja, a merciless, tyrannical Thark.
I'm pretty excited to see basically anything the director of Finding Nemo and WALL-E is working on, but as someone unfamiliar with the property, let me tell ya, all of these character and plot descriptions sound like the insane ramblings of Vinz Clortho, Keymaster of Gozer:
Look out, Tars Tarkas! Sarkoja, the merciless, tyrannical Thark, is after you and Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans, I can tell you!

Why the hell does this even exist? What's the next little-known pulp novel series that Hollywood is going to needlessly make? Probably Robert E. Howard's "Solomon Kane". LOL, that's so preposterous...oh wait.

Not to say I'm not excited to see it, since I read the books as a kid (read as: I used to sneak the book under my sheets at night, and ogle the half-naked women on the cover), but just try and tell me this doesn't sound like Gentlemen Broncos.

I'll see this for 3 reasons.
1) McNulty!
2) the wire
3) I usually end up watching every movie due to an unlimited rentals at the local movie gallery.

Is it me or does the guy in the middle look like Vince from the Slap-Chop / Sham-Wow commercials?

I have no idea how Pixar is going to make this unless it's rated "R"... I just re-read the first book and it's pretty much got be have a steampunk-"District 9" level of violence.

As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of pulp science fiction, I can say I'm very excited about this movie's prospects. They will have to tone it down, considering that everyone on Mars is completely naked save a few harnesses with jewels and the like. Other than that balls flap in the wind, breasts heave freely, and everyone has a tan. Not the best situation you want to have considering how everyone is pretty much sword fighting.
By the time you get to the....5th book, i think....there's spider head cannibal things....I dunno. After a while all the books seem the same, and there's 12 of them I think. Good pulp though.
