Aug 11 2009'Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus' Trailer a Treat for the Eyes (Unless You're Colorblind)
If you're one of the many who heard about Heath Ledger's final film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and thought, "I have no idea what an imaginarium is; a gymnasium where the mini-tramps are clouds and the dodgeballs are dreams?", you're in luck. This new trailer should explain everything. Actually, no; it won't really explain that much at all. I still have no idea what an imaginarium is. But if I had to guess from this trailer, I'd say it's wherever you go when you're on a lot of acid:
I'm confused how this looks both good and like a 1998 NBC miniseries.

I was excited about this until your 1998 nbc mini-series comment (and realised you were right) - thank you mr blow the picture

Depp is in Heath's costume in the trailer. I wonder, did he step in to help finish the movie?
3. Droocy - August 11, 2009 3:41 PM
This made me smile.

I actually am color-blind (thanks for reminding me of my genetic deficiency, IWS writer!) and I still enjoyed this! So there!

Is it just me or does Ledger look CGI'd in some of those shots? It's pretty clear they took other actors to play the character but there are definately moments Heath looks unHeath-like

Reminds me of Who framed roger rabbit. For no reason at all.

A recent Vanity Fair article on Heath Ledger explains how Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law helped save the film. Basically, there are 2 worlds in the film, the 'real' world and a 'dream' world. Heath had finished most of the principal photography that took place in the 'real' world. They basically justified that in the 'dream' world, Heath's character is represented by three aspects of his personality, one played by Depp, Law, and Farrell each. Or something along those lines. In short, the script had to get reworked to justify the new actors playing parts that represent Heath's part.

"Ledger's role was recast with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying transformations of Ledger's character Tony as he travels through a dream world."-Wikipedia
There you go.

"I have machine guns... IN MY BUTT????" Oh... wait... wrong talkback.
12. DannyE - August 11, 2009 5:18 PM
So wait. It's a movie starring Jhonny Depp as Heth Ledger?
13. Charlie Caligula - August 11, 2009 5:44 PM
The line at the end about death, while obviously part of the story, is definitely meant to exploit Ledger's passing.

I love the colorful scenes.

16. DarkCoopLord - August 11, 2009 9:50 PM
really shitty wigs. they make heath look like johnny depp or colin farrell...
17. patty - August 11, 2009 10:34 PM
the animation reminds me of Whoville from The Grinch. That kinda sucks.
18. NotSoDarkCoopLord - August 11, 2009 10:57 PM
@DarkCoopLord
Yeah.... Kind of the point, but you got that backwards. They made Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell look like Heath Ledger. That whole him dying before the movie was finished thing created a huge void.... The wigs helped though...
19. HeyHey - August 11, 2009 11:42 PM
yeah! another awesome Gilliam acid trip, and I've never been on acid so I'll take Stinky's word... really!

Looks good. I just hope it's better than "The Brothers Grimm." Gilliam — while masterful — has been off his game lately.
23. stud - August 12, 2009 1:41 PM
Wow, AMAZING. looks like another Gilliam masterpiece.

30. SevenAce - August 13, 2009 3:02 AM
Looks good! RIP Heath
But is just me or does it sound like Heath is using his "JOKER" voice at 0:38-0:40 we he says "Doctor Parnassus" ? lol
31. Lisa Stone - August 13, 2009 4:38 PM
Great cast, I hope the movie does well in memory of Heath.
32. frank - August 13, 2009 10:07 PM
This looks like the most outright Pythonesque thing Gilliam has done in a while. I approve wholeheartedly! Certainly can't be worse than Tideland.
33. Shenron - August 14, 2009 12:17 AM
@9
Thank you for explaining to the ppl that can't read what was going on there.
If you follow entertainment news at all, you would know that Depp, Law, and Farrel did this out of love and respect for Heath and the roll he was playing in a fantastic film!
I personally can't wait to see howt they did... its kinda like the Crow when Brandon Lee died on set.
34. The Gorgeous One - August 14, 2009 2:26 PM
Jude, Law. Colin Farrel, Heath Ledger and Johnny Depp? At least I only have to buy one movie to masturbate to!
35. mmmm - August 14, 2009 8:32 PM
@34 - Amen to that. :) Although, I'll also have to invest in a HUGE TV that I can put above my bed to make the masturbation easier!
36. Species 8472 - August 15, 2009 3:04 AM
It does look kind of Merlin/Alice, but also a bit 70's.
37. shar - August 20, 2009 2:48 PM
@34 & 35
Ladies, that's terribly rude of you. I can't believe you'd forget Christopher Plummer...
Or are you Ageist?
38. Bob - August 25, 2009 12:48 PM
Tom Waits as the DEVIL?!?!? holy-shit-yes-indeed. Can't wait for this movie. Listen to "First Kiss" by Tom Waits. Great stuff.
