Jul 16 2009'Whip It' Trailer: Coming-of-Age by Way of Roller Derby

whip-it-trailer.jpg

Former extra-terrestrial savior, fire starter, Scream victim and Charlie Angel Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It, has got a trailer. Watch it loud so your mom knows that, like Ellen Page, you'd rather be knocking girls over in roller skates than competing in beauty pageants. Or, if you're satisfied with the beauty pageant life, don't even bother with this movie; just keep on looking great.

Here's your trailer, grrls:

Better than I would have expected as a debut from the star of Home Fries. And who doesn't like an appearance by Future Man?

Aw, it looks fun. Of course, I would pay to watch Ellen Page eating cereal and reading a newspaper, but still, this looks even better than that.

This movie looks fun, but in no way shows what Roller Derby these days is about.
I can't even count how many illegal moves are in this trailer!
Only two leagues in the US are banked track derby, the rest of us are all flat-track.

That being said, it looks like a fun movie.
I LOVE the name Hurl Scouts, too cute!

Skip it

Only with Old School Derby League rules can you punch people, elbow, so on and so forth. WFTDA fortunantly, or unfortunantly (however you look at it), doesn't approve of such illegal shenanigans. Then again, the WFTDA also takes umbrage with backwards skating in the pack, although it's a skills requirement inorder to be rostered.

But all that aside, this movie looks cute. And yes, roller derby really is that awesome. :)

Oh c'mon, everyone knows roller derby is for hefty homely-looking girls that can't get a date.

you gotta have the mandatory black girl

How exactly is roller derby awesome? It might be one of those things where if you have to ask, you'll never know, but I don't see what's fueled it's recent popularity. The Carolina Rollergirls here have terrific marketing, and seem to be doing great. Am I just too old to get this? I'm glad it's making other people happy, but I can't seem to tap into it. :(

you gotta have the mandatory white girl

Finally, Maybe Funke is getting some screen time. I missed her.

SmokingGirl - you can skate backwards, but it has to be in the anti-clockwise direction like everyone else.

You can skate backwards in the pack, but there can be no engaging either other blockers or the jammer. Plus, depending on the head ref, some put limits as to how long you can skate backwards in the pack. And with the fact that you cannot engage while skating backwards, it makes the ability fairly redundant.

Then again, some WFTDA rule following leagues prohibit leg-whips, even though there is no rule against them, while some others allow out of bounds contact. So one could say that the old cliche is true, "some rules were just made to be broken" eh?

i might actually support this piece of crap "sport" if they fought instead of just skating in circles. the 10 sec of the bout they showed here was 10x as entertaining as any bout i have been to.
id rather watch hockey!

I'll watch it for Zoe Bell alone.

I think the movie looks fun. As someone who has fallen in love with derby in the past year, the derby geek fest in this thread has made my morning. At Houston's latest bout on Saturday, they were talking about the new rules in regards to skating backwards, and I think they said that you can only skate backwards to join the pack after coming out of the penalty box. But I could be wrong.

@7 - At the last bout I went to, Austin had just scored 15 points and there was only one jam left for Houston to catch up. One of our best players managed to get 15 points in the final jam and we won! It was pretty damn exciting (I lost my voice cheering) and it was one of the best bouts I have seen in a long time. Derby just gets my blood pumping if it's a good match-up.

Id rather watch amanda but then would it count as a porn?

Great...

A chick flick for hipsters.

So THAT'S where Juliet Lewis has been...thought she fell into that same hole as Michael Keaton.
