Jul 14 2009Natalie Portman Loves Thor
More information about real-life humans playing ridiculous comic book characters! Confirming previous rumors, Natalie Portman has been cast as Jane Foster, the love interest, in Kenneth Branagh's Thor adaptation. The casting brings a name to the largely unknown cast, but also comes with a vague but foreboding red flag: "the character will be updated." From Marvel Studios:
Marvel Studios announced today that Academy Award® nominated actress Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the studio's highly anticipated movie "Thor."In the early "Thor" comics, Jane Foster was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation.
Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film.
Congratulations, Natalie Portman. With V for Vendetta, a trilogy of Star Wars, and now Thor on your resume, you can now rest assured that, if this acting thing doesn't work out, you will have a permanent, guaranteed seat at any and every nerd convention until the day you die. You can just walk in and Lou Ferrigno will have to stand up, give you his chair and hold your coat.

Thor hasn't been portrayed well on film since Vincent D'Onofrio played him in "Adventures in Babysitting."

I hope by "the character will be updated" they mean he's going to be more like Thor in "The Long Dark Teatime Of The Soul". He was a brilliant character in that.

I love her.

I used to think her performance in the Star Wars films qualified as the worst acting I have ever seen... until I saw her rap song/video she did for SNL.
She is the epitome of an actor that can only play herself as a character.

titihI: Wow, way to be shallow AND have no taste in women, acting, or comic book characters. Paltrow was the second best thing in Ironman (RJD being the first).
By "updated" I assume they mean she'll have numerous stupid affairs with doctors and interns, develop cancer, and then complain that the writing on the show is bad. Isn't that what modern nurses do?

She's on my top 5 freebies and that shit is laminated.

@ taste police: Yes! As much as I generally loathe Gwyneth, she was really good in Ironman.
As for Portman, she's great, so I have no issues here. She was terrible in Star Wars, no doubt, but that was the exception.

I'm going to be hilariously optimistic and imagine that by "updated", they mean that she'll be a doctor instead of a nurse, because, you know, now women can do that. Also, Natalie's a fuckin' PhD! I'm stoked.
