Jul 17 2009'Futurama' Voices Getting Effed Over?
Last month's news of new Futurama episodes coming to Comedy Central has been downgraded from a "Good news, Everyone!" to a "Why must everything beautiful be destroyed?"
Forces of Geek is reporting that Futurama voice actors John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, and Maurice LaMarche are claiming 20th Century Fox is trying to re-cast much of the vocal talent. The studio has even put out casting calls:
[ DR. JOHN ZOIDBERG (ZOIDBERG) ] Dr. Zoidberg, a lobster-like alien, left his home planet of Decapod 10 to become a rich doctor but instead became the Planet Express staff doctor (doesnt pay so well). Zoidberg, who is usually shunned by the rest of the Planet Express crew, is always in search of his next meal. His skill as a surgeon, and basic knowledge of human anatomy, are often called into question. He secretly desires to become a stand-up comedian...SERIES REGULAR
Let's express some outrage. Who wants to burn down the police stable?

2. John Prime - July 17, 2009 6:03 PM
do the execs at fox ruin a good thing? THe fans have fought hard to get the show back and do you think we want it back only to be filled with craptastic voices?
3. kate - July 17, 2009 6:04 PM
Also, suck my non-existant balls firstards.
4. Greatsayain - July 17, 2009 6:14 PM
They were already saving money by having 5 actors play 15 character and they were great. how can anyone even think of ruining such greatness?

6. squeehunter - July 17, 2009 7:00 PM

zoidberg's first name is john? that can't be right...
11. jp.frothy - July 17, 2009 8:05 PM
@ sully: It cant be. I was always under the assumption it was JUST "Zoidberg" or "Dr. Zoidberg".
12. Andy - July 17, 2009 8:28 PM
I won't be surprised if they end up recasted, but hope they don't and somehow the original voice actors can do them.
13. Jessie - July 17, 2009 8:31 PM
noooo! futurama is perfect the way it is!
14. Melissa - July 17, 2009 8:39 PM
WTF?!??!?!
15. Allison - July 17, 2009 9:05 PM
They do this, I'm not watching. Simple as that.
16. Pat - July 17, 2009 9:25 PM
@15 Ditto, buddy. I love "Futurama" but would boycott the show if the voice talent were re-cast and would urge others to do the same.
17. Jenn - July 17, 2009 10:44 PM
This is part of why I hate Fox with a burning passion. Other things include Firefly and Family Guy. Do these guys just sit around thinking about how to drive us crazy by starting great shows and cancelling them at their peak?
I'm a HUGE Futurama fan, but if Fox starts screwing around with it, I won't make myself cry by watching it. I will spend my evening poking pins in my Fox Exec voodoo doll instead.
18. That Bastard Tony - July 17, 2009 10:46 PM
You would figure that Fox would have learned their lesson when they tried this shit with The Simpsons but I guess studio execs have very short memories... and are greedy as shit.
19. VaultDweller13 - July 17, 2009 11:12 PM
@10 and 11 His fist name is John. It's been mentioned in the show.
Also, why the hell do they give that bum Seth MacFarlane three shows but then they give the shaft to the best show they ever had and sqandered that came from the guy who gave them their biggest show ever.
20. Kerrie - July 17, 2009 11:14 PM
Tis true. I've seen the complete breakdown - they're re-casting EVERY single lead rolet, and even featured roles such as Mom.
21. spiritkittykat - July 17, 2009 11:57 PM
If they do this...I for one am NOT going to watch! SO dumb!
22. amanda - July 18, 2009 12:14 AM
thats awful
i guess there wont really be new episodes of futurama afterall...
23. haha - July 18, 2009 12:22 AM
NOOOO!
There is no way I will be able to watch it if they do this. This is sick.
24. CMA - July 18, 2009 12:32 AM
Fry is the love of my life. You can't do this to me/us!
25. NerdRage - July 18, 2009 12:32 AM
Ugh. Fox is amazing at how well they ruin things. I have trouble believeing they do the things they do, be it canceling Family Guy over and over (shouldn't that have shown them their bad at this?) or taking a great show like Firefly and showing it out of order and constantly changing the air dates.
You would think being just slightly better than CBS wouldn't be enough, but it looks like as long as they are just above last, they're happy just doing whatever.
"Hey, a lot of people really like this. I'm sure more people will like it if we change it!"
Fuck poloticians, when do studio execs get term limits? The ones at Fox suck balls.
26. Tom - July 18, 2009 12:52 AM
No Billy West... Not watching.
THIS IS WHY WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS
27. It's called a profit margin - July 18, 2009 1:28 AM
uh probably the reason they stopped making it is because animated shows are insanely expensive to make and just guessing that the voice actors are demanding huge salaries. the studio isnt going to make something that is going to cost more than it makes. i say get rid of actors who demand ridiculously high salaries and give new talent a try. i'll do it for free.
28. Doug - July 18, 2009 3:05 AM
I agree with everyone about this being totally messed up.
This is not only wrong, but perverse.
You don't just go ahead and change CLASSIC television shows without any regard for the consequences.
If Comedy Central changes the voice talent on the show, they'll be making a horrible mistake.
It was those actors we want in their respective roles... not someone who can do a decent impression of somebody else's artistic value.
These actors have not only given voice to characters we love, but they have helped to shape the personalities that we perceive.
The Simpsons aren't doing this BS... why would Futurama?
Doesn't make sense, unless Fox knows better than Comedy Central... and that would be shameful.
29. coy duke - July 18, 2009 6:16 AM
Billy West screwed over his partner when he took over for both voices on Ren and Stimpy.
30. mgroves - July 18, 2009 8:59 AM
This will not stand.
31. billybopboppyjoe - July 18, 2009 12:18 PM
Oh my sweet jesus what fucking morons
Im not gonna watch it if none of the original voice actors are in it
Its blasphemous
DEAR FOX
GO SUCK MY BIG HAIRY BALLS
32. dan - July 18, 2009 2:35 PM
that is F!
I hope this is the best bargaining maneuver Fox has, because if it fails, and they do not get the talent, then nobody is gonna watch. Fox does not have the luxury of having 20 years worth of enthusiasts willing to be held hostage to an inferior product (as did George Lucas for his foray into the destruction of human creativity).
Come to think of it, George Lucas probably caused the Great Recession with the prequel. what a tool.
To sum up: Don't forget your place Fox. Give us our Futurama, or we will take a dump on your shoes.
33. Birch - July 18, 2009 3:29 PM
@27
You make a valid point, they are in this to make money. However, if they bring back a long dead show and replace the beloved cast, they're just trying to make a quick buck off the loyal fan base. It's a little insulting.
34. Albert - July 18, 2009 4:24 PM
Let's look at the order of events here:
- Fox produces a brilliant but extravagantly expensive animated series
- Fox gives the show 4 years to pull ratings to match its budget
- Show does not perform adequately, Fox pulls the plug
- Cartoon Network shows the show at minimal cost, it gains a large but not staggering following
- Fans demand resuscitation a la Family Guy, even though numbers and DVD sales do not match Family Guy's success
- 13 episode "season" of 4 "movies" is produced to marginal success
- Fox agrees to bring back show to appease fans, however at a reduced budget to allow the show to actually remain on the air, mistakenly says all principal voice actors are returning
- Fans get lathered up
- It is revealed that the actors have NOT signed, as they are asking for money that Fox is not willing to give, considering the heavy budget reductions.
- Fox puts out feelers for possible voice replacements, possibly as a bluff (they did a similar thing with the Simpsons some time ago, and the voice actors eventually signed)
- YOU MONSTERS, HOW CAN YOU RUIN EVERYTHING!!! FIREFLY!!!!!
Sounds about right.
35. Brandon - July 18, 2009 5:10 PM
This is bullshit!
36. Stud - July 18, 2009 6:43 PM
Seriously, WTF BULSHHIT. FUCK FOX. Taking away the original voiceactors is like essntially taking the character''s souls away.

39. Chris - July 18, 2009 10:50 PM
One of 3 shows I actually like to watch on tv and its being screwed up! If Fox thinks this 'won't make a difference as long as the voices sound similar' they're wrong. The actors have made the characters who they are!! They want to save money on talent? Ok, hm, one small problem?.. WHO IS GOING TO WANT TO WATCH THAT CRAP??
40. Insatiable Peter - July 19, 2009 3:13 AM
They're demented if it's true. DiMaggio is Bender, period. That's like canning Dan Castellaneta as Homer. Fucking stupidity is an epidemic in this generation.

46. Em - July 19, 2009 4:48 PM
This is trufaxx. Breakdown was released on Friday and both me and my boyfriend auditioned for a few roles. The word is that there was a "WE WANT MOAR PAY KTHNXBAI" coup, so Fox is thus recasting all of it.
47. Joe - July 19, 2009 8:36 PM
everyone who's pissed off e-mail fox and comedy central and give them a tongue lashing Spider Jerusalem style. Those greedy bastards at FOX deserve to be given a physical and mental bitch slap! and comedy central needs to understand they can't allow it either.
48. Marco - July 19, 2009 11:00 PM
this is crazy! all the voices are irreplaceable. but people another way to look at this is the voice actors themselves. ever think that maybe the voice actors don't want to do this anymore? that they are the greedy ones? that they want more money or they'll leave.
its most likely what happened and hopefully Fox will hear the out cry and cough up the cash.
49. jaime - July 20, 2009 12:16 AM
holy shit, 48 comments, that's a freaking record!
50. Euey - July 20, 2009 1:03 AM
Dear TV execs at Fox - I just won't watch the show and will spend my dollars on buying stuff advertised on another network. So bite my shiney metal tv remote.
51. wheeliam. - July 20, 2009 8:11 AM
Everyone should write FOX and complain. They have a feedback address that can be found on their website.
However, keep in mind this is the same screwy tactic FOX used on the Simpsons years ago to keep from having to pay their voice actors more. It worked then, and it'll work now, I'm sure.
52. Fist Magnet - July 20, 2009 10:30 AM
It's Coy and Vance all over again.
53. Livinius Nwambe - July 20, 2009 10:39 AM
Goddamn Fox...
First Firefly, then Drive... Now this. Jesus, Fox has the Midas touch when it comes to fucking stuff up. I liked Firefly, I thought Drive was cool, and Futurama... Well, that's awesome beyond a shadow of a doubt. Why you gotta fuck it up, Fox?
Goddamn the voice talent...
My guess is that this is a ploy to lower the stars' salaries. I hope that the voice talent comes to their senses and accepts the "palty" figure of less than $75k/episode. Really, for a show that was cancelled and then re-started, 75k is not bad. Look at American Dad, King of the Hill and Family Guy. Hell, those two shows aren't even popular but they're still on the air. Take what you can get, stop being prima donnas.
54. meme - July 20, 2009 10:44 AM
Here's the feedback e-mail for fox.
askfox@fox.com
Tell them to "bite my shiny metal ass" Why bother even bringing it back if you are going to piss off all of the fans and no one is going to watch it. Just keep making the 4 episode movies like they have been.
55. Jeremy - July 20, 2009 10:57 AM
Bravo, Albert #34. Its very easy to blame the big bad Fox network. Corporations are big, and care about making money and are therefor evil. I LOVE Futurama, I watched every episode as it aired, I bought each season on dvd, then each dvd movie. Fox did not have to produce those. But they did. Fox did not need to completely renew the show. But they did. The voice actors did not need to ask or higher salaries on a show with a restricted budget. But they did.
If this is a bargaining tactic, then so be it, it happens all the time. Currently it is going on with Paula Abdul and American idol. It happened with Friends time after time, it happens with the Simpsons each time new contracts are negotiated, but if the original actors are not willing to compromise and settle on a fair salary, it is as much their fault as it is the big bad Fox network's.
56. Johnny Cash Register - July 20, 2009 11:24 AM
Normally, when I hear people react to things like this by saying, "Forget it, I won't watch it" I think... yes you will. You're outraged now, but you'll get over it. But honestly, I can say that I won't watch it. I've got the original seasons on DVD, I don't need to watch the new shows. I've seen the new Star Wars films. I know how much people can destroy the goodwill they established in the early days of their franchise.
57. Momboelitist - July 20, 2009 11:52 AM
I'm assuming it's just a bluff by Fox to get the regulars to drop their asking price.
58. laura - July 20, 2009 1:28 PM
i'm not going to watch if they recast the voices....that is bs...lame
59. yourmom - July 20, 2009 4:24 PM
Erroneous! Erroneous! Erroneous on both counts!
60. Eddie Vertigo - July 20, 2009 6:49 PM
If they replaced the actors of Seinfeld or 30 Rock, the outrage from fans wouldn't be so easily ignored by the network heads in charge, but since this is viewed by most executives as "just a cartoon", we're somehow supposed to be okay with that? I don't think so.
You've got a handful of wonderfully talented voice actors who not only provide comedic timing, dramatic depth, and personality to the colorful characters of Futurama, but they also do many other character voices per voice actor (sometimes dozens). Not to mention if this were a live-action show, the special-effects budget would have bankrupted the network.
And what's with the Emmy's nominating Family Guy, but not The Simpsons? 20 years of solid entertainment and not even a special thank-you award?
61. nicole - July 20, 2009 7:22 PM
this is an outrage. a blasphemy. I feel betrayed. I predict a big tragic FAIL.

I'm an old fan of the series, and I still watch old episodes on DVD regularly...but I will not watch the new seasons if any of the voice-actors are changed.
64. big teeth - July 21, 2009 6:48 PM
Eh.. what else is new? Actual new episodes are such a pipe dream that is was nice to at least believe they were coming. Nobody ever accused Fox of having competent executives.. Futurama itself nailed it a long time ago:
Presenting the president of the network!
PRESIDENT: Greetings, gentlemen. You already know my execu-bots.
Executive Alpha, programmed to like things it has seen before.
Hey, hey, hey.
Executive Beta. Programmed to roll dice to determine the fall schedule.
More reality shows!
And Executive Gamma, programmed to underestimate Middle America.
It's funny, but is it going to get them off their tractors?
