Jul 9 2009First Look at 'Whip It': Ladies in Skates

USA Today has posted the first look at Whip It, Drew Barrymore's Devo-titled directorial debut that stars Ellen Page as a rebellion teenage who enters the roller derby circuit.

I would say this film stands a good chance of bringing attention back to the sport, but I think roller derbies already started regaining popularity a few years ago, so maybe this will arbitrarily re-popularize a different fad sport. Yo-yo competitions? Groups of people shoving themselves into phone booths? Skip-It? Probably Skip-It.

I have a friend who is an LA Derby Doll and from this picture, I think that's Krissy Krash from the Tough Cookies on the right.

so i am guessing these girls suck at the sport. arent these girls supposed to be pretty beefy. kinda hoping to see some thick girls, but then again it is hollywood. no girl over 98 lbs. is allowed on the big screen for more than 10 sec.

they told ellen page that to be in this role, she needed to gain 60 lbs., but then drew barrymore just decided to play that role herself and created a new character for page.

ZING!

That's a whole lotta pale.

If Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore attempt Texas accents, I am quitting movies forever.

I found a game review with the real LA Derby Dolls' Tough Cookies (with photos):

I thought roller derby was already popular ...and this movie is trying to jump on the train.

i ahve some friends that play roller derby and while i love them dearly it is a stupid "sport"
my observation on roller derby after watching entirely too much of it is that its a "sport" played by a bunch of woment that want to be bad ass but arent so they put on some skates and started telling everyone that its a bad ass game and theyre bad ass for playing it. then they throw on some pleated skirts and skate in cricles.
i have seen more action roller rink bday parties. admission is always waaay to high, really, you want me to pay $20 to watch my friend skate in circles? fuck off

LOL. Amanda, I've ordered you a table: Bitter, party of one.

HAHAHAHA you dont get much exposure to roller derby chicks do you carlos?
nothing like an otherwise cool chick that wants to be cool so badly that she latches onto a hobby that makes her anything but - go team! ;)

Wow, seriously Amanda, did a derby league reject you for being a bitter douche? Probably. You need to lay off the haterade. Get over whatever happened. Learn to enjoy life. Get laid. Good luck to you!

Amanda ill pay that $20 for you if i can throw sticks at people skating and watch them fall.

HAHAHAHAHA carlos you crack me up!
i have zero interest in playing roller derby, its stupid - but i would totally be down to trip people with shiyan!! :D

I'm just curious as to what a "rebellion teenage" is... if I didn't know better, I'd say this site was in Engrish! ;)

The author probably had hired some dinosaur hookers that's a good reason to misspell stuff. Lets go trip people Amanda thinking they are cool cause they can go in a big circle YEAH!

Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore? Throw in a Zooey Deschanel and a Sigourney Weaver, and every actress that I find slightly weird-looking but incredibly attractive will be collected in one mesmeric film! 'Tis a fate devoutly to be wished.
