Jul 1 2009'Avatar': Half a Cat-Eyed, Space-Faced Alien Head Revealed!
Put on your 3-D glasses (everything James Cameron does is in 3-D now) and behold the sparkly, blue face of one of the aliens in Avatar. The species looks a lot more weird-obnoxious-performance-artist-who-would-probably-be-found-on-stilts-at-Burning-Man-mixed-with-Ron-Perlman-in-Beauty and the Beast-in-Blue Man Group-esque than I thought they would. Thoughts?

I hope he's showing a trailer at Comic Con so I can watch poorly filmed cam footage of it and squeel with joy.
2. Erica - July 1, 2009 4:44 PM
I just came.

Looks like someone fell asleep at the tattoo shop!

Cameron disappears for over a decade and the best he can come up with is a copy of Mystique from the "X-Men"?
Ooh, blue body paint and sparkles. There's a quantum leap for special effects!
5. Nick - July 1, 2009 5:05 PM
Because the poster of half of the face of one character in the movie is totally representative of all the special effects in the movie.
6. Jon - July 1, 2009 5:12 PM
They spend $200 million on this flick and they're still using the "Papyrus" font?

To those criticizing the movie's special effects based on this one poster--You're an idiot.
I would remind people that the face in the poster is 100% CGI. I think that's pretty amazing. So, despite it being just a poster and in no way truely representative of the movie, I think it's awesome.
I'm hoping a trailer is gonna be shown/released at Comic Con. This seems to point to that fact. And for a movie that is coming out in December, I would think they need to release it soon.

People hating or dissing this poster obviously have NO idea what this movie is about and what its going to bring to film. Like someone said...that face is all cgi...pretty impressive. Blue Mystique someone said? el oh el!! ok...go back into your cave guy, cause like I said, you have NO idea what you are talking about.
20 mins of this movie is gonna be more incredible, epic, and amazing than any of the xmen movies could ever have hoped for...combined!
Talk all your shit now...but when it comes out I know you will be singing another tune. I cant wait to see this.

I had the pleasure of being at one of the private screenings. All I can say is that the 20 or so minutes of the movie that I saw left me speechless. The degree of photorealism that they have achieved with the CGI, combined with meaningful 3D effects, was unbelievable. If the overall story is anywhere near as good as it appears to be, this will be a game changing movie.

It's not cat-eyed. It's yellow, but with a round iris, not oval like a cat's.
(The nose looks fairly cat-like, though!) I can't wait for this movie! It's a futuristic Dances With Wolves on an alien planet directed by James "King of the World" Cameron! In 3D! What's not to love?

this film is going to transform our psyche
12. Hari - July 2, 2009 7:35 AM
This film will be the downfall of humanity.

I don't think we need any more evidence that hired trolls monitor this blog for the purpose of cyber-bullying anyone who nay-says a movie (or its promotion, apparently).
14. Matt - July 2, 2009 12:07 PM
@13: Again...this movie is gonna change peoples perspective on film and cinema. If you dont think so then you havent read or know ANYTHING about this movie. Might as well just keep your mouth shut cause you will have a SLEW of people tell you otherwise.
15. The Kern-al - July 2, 2009 12:13 PM
@6 i lol'd, it could have been comic sans
16. Photoshop Police - July 2, 2009 12:17 PM
That explains why the other movie is just called The Last Airbender. Some jerk stole the title again ( G-Force, my a$$!!!, it's friggin Mission Gerbil Impossible)
17. DreamFolder - July 2, 2009 1:56 PM
@14
Thank you for so eloquently demonstrating my point.
You're right, I don't know anything about this movie. Who does? Like all movies the details are kept from the public until its released. Only then can we see what weak, senseless drivel in terms of story and plot is being used to prop up an excuse for ridiculously expensive effects that may or may not rival what you can see in a Disney World attraction.
What I do know is that you are a stooge, a hired mercenary paid to troll sites like this one to bash anyone who makes a comment that in any way detracts from the promotional efforts of the studio. That's all I was saying.
18. Gabe Cash - July 2, 2009 6:05 PM
Ooh, is it really 100% cgi?! Oh golly, that changes everything! It's a frickin' masterpiece then!
Care to back up that little nugget of information with a link? I know the film has a ton of cgi, including the blue things, but did Cameron really say that was how they'd be done for the teaser poster?
You realize that this movie will have to make about $500 million at the very minimum to be considered anything other than a disappointment?
The poster gets a D from me. It does nothing to make me want to see the movie or hint at anything that it could be about. It's simply...there.
19. jdrno - July 3, 2009 2:10 PM
My turn: this movie looks STUPID. Cameron should've just done Titanic 2. ..and that blue chick looks fat.. why couldn't Bay have directed this haha
20. jdrno - July 3, 2009 2:14 PM
...at least he would've done hot space chicks on motorcycles and dog humping jokes.. damn this Cameron guy. Giving this movie two syndromes down!
21. CaptainMorgan - July 3, 2009 3:01 PM
I am unsure about this film. I haven't heard much about it, but I'm sure Warren Beaty and Dustin Hoffman do a good job and will more than likely mine comic gold from the script. Not sure how effective a 3D movie will be in a desert? Can't wait!
22. Vitero - July 6, 2009 12:13 AM
I wish there were special MST3K theaters where people are encouraged to make fun of the movies. We would have a field day with this
23. Airkeeper - July 12, 2009 8:09 AM
Heh, I've seen the pics. They're pretty cool. Don't wanna get them in trouble, but a couple of mates work on the movie itself while being filmed.
I just wanted to skite.
24. frank - July 16, 2009 1:05 PM
I'm just kinda disappointed in the character design here. Why do all sympathetic aliens have to be people (and not just people, but statuesque caucasoid women) with a little makeup? That's why District 9 kicks ass.
25. Eyeglasses - December 30, 2009 12:44 PM
OMG, I saw this in 3D. AMAZING!!! A little creepy though.

@18 - "You realize that this movie will have to make about $500 million at the very minimum to be considered anything other than a disappointment?"
....
14 days - $760M (http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avatar.htm)
Is that still considered a disappointment?
On another note, why is it that when I read most of the comments on this site, I subvocalise to myself in the voice of comic book guy?
27. OMG - January 4, 2010 10:41 PM
theres gunna be porn of this movie....
28. hmm - January 7, 2010 10:52 PM
What's wrong with the Papyrus font? The price or rarity of the font really has no relevance if it fits the image they're going for. Honestly, I didn't even notice it was Papyrus until you mentioned it.
