Jun 26 2009'Daybreakers' Trailer: Even Vampires Blow at Resource Management
Look out vampire-teen-abstinence-romance, there's a new vampire crossover genre in vampire town: vampire-sci-fi-action-noir! In Daybreakers, the we're-exhausting-our-precious-resources! ecological warning is given the Twilight twist, with the vampire race--Earth circa 2019's new dominant society--finding itself on the verge of running out of humans to harvest for blood. It's something like this:
"Nowwwwwww what?", says Vampire Co. CEO Sam Neill.
"I'll work on it. I'm dead, anyway. Because I'm a vampire," explains Ethan Hawke.
"I have crossbows," warns Willem Dafoe.
It actually looks somewhat better than that horrible description. Trailer:

I'm not sure if it will be good, but kudos on coming up with a new spin on the vampire movie. I love that all the uniformed, straight-laced looking characters in that preview were the vampires, and that humans are the unusual, hidden group.

It's definitely a unique twist on the genre. I'll see it.

We're still on the ice berg of the vampire overload, but this does look unique at least.
5. Waffles - June 26, 2009 3:27 PM
As long as they don't sparkle it might be good.
6. u betcha - June 26, 2009 3:34 PM
And as long as there are no spider monkey references.

zomg it's like teh matrix but the robots are vampires!! this will be teh greatest thing evar!!!1
But seriously, unless it's explained in the movie and I'm just not getting it from the trailer, how are they possibly running out of humans? Are we anywhere near running out of cattle? Unless, of course, due to immortality, vampires are at this point in the movie world are far outnumbering our current human population, but warfare over land and resources would have already begun to erupt nipping that problem in the bud anyway...

"The film stars Ethan Hawke, Sam Neill and Willem Dafoe and is set in the year 2017, and a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the dominant plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher (Hawke) works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save the human race."

It's about time someone breaks that horrible trend of sissy vampires who just want to talk about their feelings...
I usually don't like remakes, but we need some old-school Dracula.

Because cattle breed much faster and more frequently than humans...I think that pretty much explains that.

Cattle breed faster and more frequently than humans? U've never met a christian family have you? They multiply like freaking rabbits. lol
This is lookin a little true blood meets Resident evil...but like Waffle says AS LONG AS THEY DON'T SPARKLE, thank god.

Your all retarded, this is obviously a rip off of the concept behind the Last Blood webcomic, just no zombies
13. T-Diddy - June 26, 2009 6:11 PM
Amazing!!! This finally explains how Obama will bring the cost of health care down and cover us all!
This must be set in one of those "outlying" years that the budget projection didn't cover. Just goes to show you why politicians shouldn't put together the 10-year costs for their own policies. 1 month later - VAMPIRE ARMAGEDDON!

I. AM. SO. SICK. OF. VAMPIRES.

what is song at the end of the clip? It's Death Cab for Cutie right, but what is the name of the song?
16. Kelli - June 26, 2009 10:26 PM
Its Placebo "Running up that hill"
17. annie - June 26, 2009 10:36 PM
It would be placebo.
18. Queen of Wands - June 27, 2009 10:28 AM
I'd give it a shot

A little like the book I am Legend in its vampire dominant society. Not surprised a film grabbed the concept after the "official" movie didn't. The cast seems solid, we'll see how it is.
20. nonog - June 27, 2009 1:25 PM
Blade already did it!

"Because cattle breed much faster and more frequently than humans...I think that pretty much explains that."
FAIL.
"Gestation in cattle lasts on average for 280 days (279-290d)" (9 months) From: http://www.partners-in-reproduction.com/reproduction-cattle/pregnancy-conception-gestation.asp
And what's the norm for amount of calves per birth? Oh that's right, one, the same as humans.
Not to mention the humans are being bred in captivity the same as cattle, though even more technologically advanced and industrialized the way they show it in the trailer, almost Matrix-style. That would push up and regularize the frequency of pregnancies, and fertility drugs have been shown to increase the likelihood of multiple births per pregnancy. Also, humans are considerably smaller than cattle and are omnivorous, so they would require less space, less nutrition, -less everything to produce. Plus, they only need the blood, which is renewable, so it's more like dairy farming than beef farming where to collect you have to kill.
And now I've given way too much thought to something that will likely be explained away in the movie, just to refute you for refuting me.

i kinda want to see that.
but i love action movies.
and vampire movies.
BUT NO TWILIGHT- that shit sucks.
kthanks.

While out walking my dog and looking at cows with calves in a pasture, I realized I'd omitted something. Cattle reach sexual maturity a lot more quickly than humans. However, in this case that still doesn't make too much of a difference seeing as how the vampires could start draining blood right away and keep doing it over the course of the human's entire life, dependent on what restrictions they have, of course.
Ok done with this, ha.
24. Torrigor - June 28, 2009 1:46 PM
Hm.. Doesn't seem too bad. Although I'm kind of getting sick of vampire movies. Although I've seen an online comic with quite a similar plot: http://lastblood.keenspot.com/
Almost the same, but instead of a futuristic world, its gone to hell and is over run by zombies.
25. LenS - June 29, 2009 6:26 PM
Since it takes at least 12 years for a human female to reach puberty, humans can't be bred as fast as cows which reach maturity in a fraction of that. Cows can produce at least 9 generations before a human produces one. While it takes 24 years to get to grandchildren in humans, in cows it takes six years. Nine generations of cows are produced in the time it takes to produce just three generations of humans. All that changes the math enormously.
Cows are bigger, thus providing more food than would a human.
Calves can walk within minutes of birth and graze for themselves in months. They require way less effort to raise than humans (even if you keep the humans stupid).
You're also missing the point of the movie -- the vampirism took over the planet in a few short years or even years. They simply outbred their food supply. It's interesting to see a film delve into this problem area for the idea of vampires. Malthus and Adam Smith versus Dracula!
26. DrunkenScholar - July 1, 2009 7:21 PM
Thank you LenS. You did what my brain meats refused to do.
27. delic8 - July 1, 2009 7:25 PM
The cast looks solid, I like the music, the premise is just fresh enough.
It seems like they let the text titles do a little too much of the talking, but I also recognize that good trailers are hard to put together.
While I did get a kick out of Twilight (so many opportunities for drinking games: drink whenever Edward looks concerned, drink whenever a main character lacks any tangible personality,) I'm also afraid that vampires are going to lose whatever shred of horror-cred they have left. I'd love to see another Dracula, something a little like the Coppola version but with less romance, more bite. Or an adaptation of a lesser-known vampire book, like Thirsty, which would appeal to teens (hopefully) without teaching good Christian values and the miracle of body glitter.

I didnt like it the 1st time when it was called I Am Legend. Another FAIL for the movie execs
29. Toddimus - July 11, 2009 11:16 PM
Feels like the early Blade Movie, and seems to be a lot like the original plot of Blade 3 that is set in the future where vampires are mostly in control, but instead we got the piece of crap that was blade 3.
30. Pat - July 14, 2009 8:32 PM
Not gonna lie. This actually looks like a movie I'll go see.
31. R K - July 15, 2009 12:36 AM
was the scriptwriter a former employee at Hallmark? 'cause a series one one-liners an engrossing movie does not make...
if the movie is anything like the trailer, i will lose interest shortly after the theater goes dark, and fall asleep before the opening credits finish.
32. dimsum - October 23, 2009 3:32 PM
@29
I am Legend? Do you even go to the movies ever? Retard.
