Jun 23 2009Inside the Reflective Surface: New 'Alice in Wonderland' Images!
Elijah Wood in Eccentric Zombie Carrot Top costume says "Hello." USA Today and Yahoo have posted some new shots from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and I think you'll be surprised how much they look like the results of a "celebrities as Alice in Wonderland characters" Photoshop contest:
Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Does he really need the finger sores?

Helena Bonham Carter as Queen of Hearts as Times Square caricature.

Anne Hathaway as the White Queen/Albino with a Makeover.

Mia Wasikowska as Alice in Wonderland (Wonderland of Early, Amateur 3-D Renderings).

Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum and Pugsley and Uncle Fester.

Some sort of anthropomorphic albino rabbit amidst topiary.

Flowers with faces and the archetypal Tim Burton gate.

God, these guys are fat freaks.
Thanks to the many who sent this in.

I can NOT wait for this to come out. Tim Burton + Alice and Wonderland = Pure Genius
2. Doc - June 23, 2009 12:14 PM
O god I can smell the Mad Hatter hot topic shirts already printing.
3. jennifer - June 23, 2009 12:24 PM
hahaha @ Doc. Probably Queen of Hearts, too.
4. Larrythefatcat - June 23, 2009 12:26 PM
I didn't even see the text in the post and thought for sure that it was Elijah Wood. But, of course, it's that damned awesome Johnny Depp and his chameleon-like abilities!
5. Stanley - June 23, 2009 12:41 PM
Looks absolutely terrible. Lousy remake in the style of the horrendous Planet of the Apes, no doubt. Furthermore, Alice is supposed to be about seven years old in the books.
6. DannyE - June 23, 2009 12:52 PM
I gotta agree with Stanley. I really want to see Tim Burton remake a story where you don't go "oh of course he's doing that one" Like jack and The beanstalk or just do horror already. Most of the scenery is creepy enough.
7. Daniel - June 23, 2009 12:54 PM
I agree with Stanley, it looks like crap.
The mad hatter looks like total shit, I really don't get that at all...
Not looking forward to this, yes Doc, DEFINITELY gonna be a Hot Topic cash cow.
8. Charles Dodgson - June 23, 2009 12:54 PM
Chameleon-like abilities? Yes, perhaps a chameleon glued to a rock. A rock painted like its Mardis Gras and a rock which happens to also have Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter glued to it. A rock which assumes a different name every couple of years, for example "Edward Scissorhands" "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Pirates of the Caribbean". And now the chameleon that is Johnny Depp must assume a different form-the wild and marvellous thesbian with a bad accent. Oh wait-he did that one before.
9. Pat - June 23, 2009 12:58 PM
This is going to be a minf**k and a half.
10. dubba - June 23, 2009 1:10 PM
is that lady gaga?
11. DareBear - June 23, 2009 1:34 PM
I wonder if he wanted the Mad Hatter to look like Madonna, or if it just turned out like that.
I think half of what makes the good Tim Burton movies good are the production designers who can add to the movies imagery, otherwise it can be a little underwhelming, like Planet of the Apes.
Think about Nightmare before Christmas and Coraline, and think about how much more Henry Selick may have contributed to Nightmare than Tim Burton.
12. Fuzzy Tingle Times - June 23, 2009 1:35 PM
I thought Depp was the Mad Hatter. I can see both of them when I look at that picture. But IMDB says Depp. Wood is nowhere to be found in that lineup. I would think they might have the cast credits right since its in Post-Production at this point.

Glad I'm not that only one who thought that was Elijah Wood at first.
14. Pissed - June 23, 2009 2:11 PM
I'm severely disappointed with how this is coming together.
This is my favorite fairy tale of all time, and the movie is turning out to be another Burton-Depp-Carter fuck fest for teens to jerk off to and imitate until the next angsty film is released.
It's a shame.
15. BO - June 23, 2009 2:11 PM
Looks like that leaked pic of Depp in Mad Hatter get up from a while ago was legit.
Depp's off-set eyes are pretty freaky. It's like they are just off-set enough to steal my soul, but not off-set enough to be extremely obvious (which equals success in the soul-stealing game).
16. che-che - June 23, 2009 2:18 PM
they should have just gotten tom petty to be the mad hatter. or the cartoon charaacter from batman the animated series.
17. Pickens - June 23, 2009 2:25 PM
Definitely agree that something like Jack and the Beanstalk would have been wayyyy cooler. There's less to live up to and way more to explore... but the real question is... when I take mushrooms before going to the movies to see this will it be worth it? We'll see... We'll see
Here's a list of directors I think could make the movie just as interesting:
Roman Polanski
Mel Gibson
Michael Bay (Yeah, the guy in the 6,000 dollar suit is gonna hold the elevator for the guy in the 500 dollar suit, C'MON!)
also Sylvester Stalloen
Thanks
18. sam - June 23, 2009 3:01 PM
@DareBear: exactly!! he looks freakishly like Madonna (the gap-toothed smile! the eyes!). Tim can't NOT have wanted him to look like her. there's no backing down now.
19. goob - June 23, 2009 4:03 PM
Tim Burton is a freakin weirdo. NO THANKS!
20. kat - June 23, 2009 4:28 PM
I miss Tim Buton's original movies.
21. Heather - June 23, 2009 5:18 PM
Don't hatters go mad because of the chemicals used to strip and treat the fur they make the felted hats with? That would explain the effed up finger sores, but not the lace/brocade/?feathers? hat that Depp/Wood (I thought it was Elijah Wood, too) is wearing.
This all looks pretty standard and largely unimpressive.
The casting of Matt Lucas is pretty excellent, though.
I'll wait for it to show up on Movie Central.
22. melting walls - June 23, 2009 6:05 PM
What i want to know is, if i drop acid and then mute the volume on this movie and play pink floyd the wall, will it be as good a trip as the original?
What is this? Bat Country?
23. I think you're really cool - June 23, 2009 7:02 PM
Since everyone knows making movies is so incredibly easy, I'm really glad that everyone comes online to post their frustrations with Tim Burton.
I mean, really, an Academy Awards nomination, incomparable, timeless creativity, and universal recognition. Anyone can do that, right guys?
I admire Burton for his unwavering creativity and I think the movie will be a success.
Hey, good luck with that solitaire game.
24. Loser's nightmare - June 23, 2009 7:35 PM
Kinda makes you wonder what rock Charles Dodgson crawled out from under, doesn't it?
Burton is a genius, and so's Depp...Both their individual, and joint bodies of work speak for themselves...
The posters here....not so much....In fact, after reading their tripe, one would have to seriously question if they're even literate.
Most sound like they'd be more at home at a Scooby Doo convention.
25. Benny - June 23, 2009 8:19 PM
Stanley: Yes Alice is about 7 in the books, here she's 17. She went to Wonderland as a child but doesn't remember it, though the characters there remember her.
It's a re-imagining, not a straight up book-to-film. It's certainly not going to Planet of the Apes mark 2.
26. rob - June 23, 2009 8:51 PM
the Mad Hatter is mad, insane, not a fashion diva like John Galliano. this film, as usual, is over the top stylized, predictable
27. Val - June 23, 2009 10:16 PM
@5 - You don't know anything about this movie, do you? Since this website is obviously less about giving people the actual news on upcoming movies and more about a fat nerd without any creativity sitting around ripping apart anything that comes his way, here's a link to actually explain the movie: http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/need-to-know-alice-in-wonderland.html
how pathetic and sad is it that fucking Yahoo Movies as better/more information than a website that's supposed to have "the best movie news ever"
28. Kat - June 23, 2009 10:48 PM
Mad Hatter looks more like Elijah Wood to me than Johnny Depp. Just my opinion. And Alice in Wonderland is a creepy ass story to begin with, of COURSE Burton is doing it. I think the style is rather interesting Nightmare Before Christmas is pretty awesome. Maybe Alice in Wonderland will exceed expectations.
29. Jay - June 23, 2009 11:04 PM
This looks a little creepy I think I'll pass.
30. Aerialgreen - June 24, 2009 2:07 AM
I'm nothing but another guy that enjoys movies, and I love Edward Scissor Hands (it's among my top 20 movies of all time), but (IMO) it seems that there is indeed a limit on how many faces you can put on a good actor like Depp without making him a self-parody of his supposed "chamaleonic" abilities.
I wonder how this movie would have faired if Burton actually thought of Elijah to the Mad Hatter role and Depp for the Chesire Cat.... or no Depp & Helena at all for this movie, just for the sake of change.
31. A Fat Nerd - June 24, 2009 7:34 AM
@27
You don't know anything about this website, do you? Since you are obviously less about giving people your actual opinion on upcoming movies and more about a fat nerd without any creativity sitting around ripping apart any low budget blog that comes his way, here's a link to actually explain the website:
http://www.iwatchstuff.com/about/
how pathetic and sad is it that fucking multi million dollar-run Yahoo Movies has better/more/completely impartial (and frankly dull) information than a website that's supposed to have "the best movie news ever"
32. Evil Ash - June 24, 2009 12:47 PM
God, I hate all of you.

Awwww, Ash
34. Galtacticus - June 25, 2009 3:02 AM
Looking forward! When is this movie coming out?
35. Rory - June 25, 2009 11:11 PM
The movie isn't being directed by Tim Burton.
Tim Burton just finished making "9" and he usually takes a few months off before he makes another movie.
Also this was supposed to be a remake of the computer game: American McGee's Alice, in which Alice is put into a coma by a house fire years after the events of the original. The Alice in the Game had brown hair, the Mad Hatter had green skin and a long nose (not to mention, no hair and different clothes.)
The film is being directed by Wes Craven, and was written by Jon and Erich Hoeber.
The one thing I agree on: It looks like it'll suck nads.
36. IWS writer sucks - June 26, 2009 6:50 PM
wtf are you talking about, Rory? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014759/
"Alice" doesn't even have a director or a cast. You're a nimrod.
37. ch4p3l - June 28, 2009 4:12 PM
I shit my pants when I saw that pic. And puked a little
38. frank - June 28, 2009 10:56 PM
Man, Burton is on thin fucking ice as far as I'm concerned. Big Fish and Ed Wood are the only movies of his I genuinely liked, just about everything else has been cheesy shit. And this looks like the worst yet.
39. Captain - June 30, 2009 11:22 AM
There is a leaked video clip of this movie here: http://captain-hash.mybrute.com
enjoy.
40. Lain - July 1, 2009 3:20 PM
OHHH BOO HOOO STANLEY
Please. Did you see the Disney film? It didn't even make sense. So don't go yapping your mouth.
41. stephanie - July 2, 2009 9:46 PM
okay, the whole plot of the story is that alice is about 17, and she is about to become engaged at a party. she runs to wonderland with the rabbit, like she did ten years eariler. she forgets about everything in neverland and the red queen is the white queen's sister but the white queen had control of neverland until the red queen took it. thats the whole story.
42. cj - July 2, 2009 10:27 PM

I could freaking throw a teapot at Tim Burton for sequeling Alice, when it
A. Already has a sequel (Through the Looking Glass)
B. Doesn't need Burton's input on it. The art and madness belongs to a dead man, and thats how it should remain.
49. ... - January 29, 2010 10:32 PM
...wow...........?
