May 6 2009X-Men Begets Wolverine Begets Deadpool

Deadpool, Marvel Comics' "merc with a mouth," who some may know better as Ryan Reynolds in a tank top (see X-Men Origins: Wolverine, web-slingers), is getting his long-awaited shot at a solo film. Variety has the stoy:

Twentieth Century Fox has begun development on "Deadpool," an "X-Men" spinoff that will be crafted as a star vehicle for Ryan Reynolds, who played the character in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

The character is one of the most popular in Marvel Comics' X-Men universe. Deadpool is Wade Wilson, a mercenary who, dying of cancer, submits himself to the Weapon X genetic alteration experiment and emerges as an indestructible semi-sane anti-hero. Reynolds seemed destined to play the character. In one reference in the Marvel Comics, Deadpool is described as a mix between "a Shar Pei and Ryan Reynolds."

In one of the "Easter egg" endings of "Wolverine," Deadpool is seen rising from the rubble and whispering "Shhh" to audiences.

Sounds like Fox is ready to deliver another chapter in their rapidly-declining mutant franchise that will make you say, "Only the casting was anywhere near acceptable."

Even with the after-the-credits hint at a true-to-character, fourth-wall-breaking Deadpool, I just can't see them making a film as self-aware as it needs to be. Particularly because a really well-written Deadpool would open the film by immediately acknowledging and apologizing for participating in Wolverine.

so it's all downhill from Wolverine? we'll go down the list of X-Men and we already saw the most popular one? imagine what they can do with the most boring, forgettable characters.

Arrrg so ends the comic book movies as they start fishing at the bottom of the barrel

Ryan Reynolds genuinely seeming to want to do the character justice is the only thing that gives me hope for this.

lol i was totally coming to this site to show you this story. silly me i shouldn't have underestimated your powers. how exciting is this??

If they are basing it off the origins movie I think that with some creative writing they could fix everything they fucked up in that movie, and with ryan reynolds still leading I can see a good future in this.

Deadpool is currently getting his hundreds of years old ass kicked by Stryfe in the comics. I say a Daniel Craig-led Cable movie with him "Russel-Croweing" it as Stryfe, too.

Deadpool is supposed to be horribly disfigured, HENCE THE MASK. I will not be on board with this one, and not least because I hate Ryan Reynolds. He ruined the Blade franchise, ok he participated in the ruin, and now he's gonna turn Deadpool into a fratboy. Arg.

Oh, as of Wolverine Origins, Deadpool has been horribly disfigured alright. In fact, he's damn near unrecognizable.

I think Michael Bay needs to direct this movie so I can finally find a copy of New Mutants #98 for less than $20.

WOOT!

I'd go gay for Ryan Reynolds.

I wish Fox would stop making X-Men-related movies, I didn't realize from the previews that he's supposed to be Deadpool. I though he was Faux-hawk Ninja or something.

The wolverine Deadpool was just some angry strong bad guy at the end, who somehow brought wolverine and sabretooth together in fraternal love...

He wasn't just portrayed wrong, he had absolutely nothing to do with DP. But joke or not, apologizing for the Wolverine movie would be exactly the right thing for DP to say first.

@7, ryan raynolds ruined the blade series? he was the one spark of life in that god forsaken pile of crap. If they want to do this movie right he'll get a shitload of lines instead of the usual silent action hero type.

If I'm going to see another X-men movie, I'd rather it be Gambit's.

1. wolverine movie opens.
2. fans bitch piss and moan about how horrible fox fucked up deadpool character.
3. deadpool character spin-off announced.
4. bitching pissing and moaning fans all happy with glee and celebrating and saying how deadpool character mess-up can still be fixed.
5. deadpool movie comes out.
6. despite terrible buzz and reviews fans flock to new deadpool movie in record numbers
6. fans hate the movie despite seeing it multiple times while bitching pissing and moaning about how horrible fox fucked up deadpool character.

i like ryan reynolds. the guys adds some comic relief but deadpool is a idiot. it would be funnier as a short..not a movie. he's more comic relief for the bigger stars which is why it works in print, not on the big screen.

This makes my soul hurt. i love ryan reynolds (I'm gay it can't be helped). I love deadpool. I think Reynolds did a good job with the steaming shit sandwich they handed him.
But jesus donkey fucking christ thiscan't possibly end well as long as Fox is involved.

So help me god if they do as bad with the Magneto movie then I will never watch anything made by fox again.

end geek-rage.

oh and #7, Reynolds didn't ruin the blade franchise Snipes did. Hell, Reynolds and Parker Posey are the only reasons to watch that last movie.

Well I liked Blade 2. Ron Pearlman + decent CGI = happy fanboy. But I'll admit, the third one was stinky, Reynolds or no.

HAHAAAAHAAA!! it;s f^cking laughable , mayn!!

Coming to this as someone who doesn't know who Deadpool or Ryan Reynolds are, I'll just say I support alliterative-named actors portraying superheroes.

I hadn't read any comics for a while, and recently read some Deadpool stuff. I really disliked it from a literary standpoint (Though the art was good). I don't understand what people see in this character. He's just not that funny.

Interesting side note - I just saw the movie, and it turns out that Wolverine had bone claws before getting the adamantium ones.

That whole "the movie should open with him apoligizing" would completely fit into the deadpool mythology.
If done right, it can be as funny as the comics.
IF DONE RIGHT.

they've gotta keep Ryan Reynolds, he was made for that role (or visa versa)

@22- That's from the comics fyi.
